Well here we got The bike yesterday with a full tank rode home 40 mins 6ooo rpms. This morning the gas light comes on. WTF

you took the cap off and checked to make sure it was all the way full...? put gas in it, problem fixed ; )

With the 08 instrument cluster I would almost always get the low fuel warning icon and the 0 miles countdown when starting up. After a short distance it would come to it's sense's. Now I have the latest and greatest cluster and haven't had it pop up yet.

If it's cold out it's probably the thermistor playing up.. Mine does that (and the engine mgt light too) when cold (for the first few minutes of the ride)

Take it back to the dealer and have them pull the code out of the system. They will order you the latest version of the instrument cluster and it will be covered by warranty. We're fixing four here.

Are you certain it's the IC? I thought the thermistor that reads the fuel level based on temperature was the culprit?

How many miles? I bet about 110-120 per tank. But that's all city driving.

+1 on the low fuel light coming on when it's cool/cold. It goes off after a few minutes. Both if my CR's do that, and always have.

Yes in most situations it is the cluster needing replacement. I just fill up at 180 miles regardless if its on or not.

We've changed the fuel pumps (thermistor) and now we're going back and changing the cluster. Apparently the new cluster has a different program that accommodates a wider range of temperature variation from the thermistor. They basically stop the coding when the weather warms up.

Aaah that makes sense... I might have to get mine done at some point.. But it's not a big deal for me, I always reset the trip meter when I fill up and just ignore the low fuel warning when cold...

180 miles. Ok. I will pay attention. My dealer is pretty good. But I do feel that i'm not getting all that I'm asking for like "what flash am I running? and wheres the print out?". The sad part is they just replaced some recall part but we said we were gonna wait and see if the bike called for it

If you get the LFL and the CEL when your bike gets to operating temp, you need a new sensor/pump.
If the LFL and CEL come on shortly after starting and goes out shortly after getting to OpTemp, you need a new IC.
Latest firmware on the ICs is 6.2 or 7.1 IIRC.

Older firmware continues to poll sensors after shutdown and falsely sets the LFL error.
New firmware stops that from happening.

dont go by froggy's numbers on that or you will be sitting on the side of the road. he's kinda odd... : )

i fill up if i am anywhere near 100 on the tank. after that it wont be long before the light should be on. and when that happens then you have about ten miles to find fuel or start pushing

Yeah, 180 miles is either "I've been cruising at a low, steady speed the entire tank" or REALLY close to "I'm pushing" territory.

I usually fill up between 140 & 170 miles, depending on how hard I've been riding and how much fuel has been vented overboard. I almost always put in between 4.5 and 4.8 US gal, which leaves me a good reserve.

God I love you guys. On another note. I change my oil and filter at 300+ miles on Friday (3/5/2010) should I do it again at the 600 mark. I'm at 520 miles now???

Guard_rail - is the bike under warranty? If so don't you have to drop it back in for the 620 mile service and check anyway? The dealer will change the oil for you then.. In theory it's supposed to be free (well, it is here in the UK anyway).

Jules. That's what I was thinking too, that oil changes (600/1500) would be covered but nope ya gotta pay. Anybody know how to change the clock to the right time.
