I'm down to two. Both fit great, have similar features and are in my price range. Was trying to stay in the around to under $300. I am able to make a good case for both, but can't quite decide. One alluring factor is getting a carbon fiber helmet for only $234 shipped. The RF would be about $325. Which would you choose?

I would probably buy the shoei. I don't think i'd want all that carbon fiber around my head.

If you are not afraid to buy a used lid, I have two sharks for sale.

The rsr2 is sweet and probably close to the head shape of the shoei.

I haven't tried the Shark helmets yet. Heard good things though.

Why doesn't everyone offer a transition visor? that is a great idea.

I'd buy the Shoei, but that's because I've used that brand for years and it fits my headshape.

The Shoei and some HJCs were the only one's I've tried that fit. Most all fit too firm on the forehead.

I just bought an FS-15 "trophy". It seems to be a very nice helmet. The graphics are awesome. I haven't rode in it yet but I think it will do well. You can't beat it for $179.

If you can find a shark rsi locally to try, it will probably fit you great. It's also lighter than the shoei and only 7 oz heavier than that carbon fiber monstrosity. The older rsi models can be found online for half what the shoei goes for or less.

I have the Shark RSX like the one in this video. Nice helmet. Shield is super thick. Quiet helmet w/ decent airflow.

I have a Nolan N-102C modular.
It's the first helmet I ever liked... no
I love it! It's light and I can get the helmet, and my glasses, on at the same time.

Not especially quiet, but the one-hand chin latch, ski-boot latch vs. D-rings and flip-down sun-visor are features I won't let go of.

I will never again deal with D-rings and gloves.

I don't trust any of the latch systems and if you can get the helmet on with glasses on, then it's to big. Never mind, just re-read it's a modular.

If I needed a modular, i'd still look at the sharks. Why would you ever want to ride with the chin bar up? I guess if I was stuck in traffic a lot, it would make some sense.

I retract my previous statement. I would not own the shark modular or any for that matter. The nolan mentioned weighs 4 lbs, which is heavy, but the shark weighs 4.3 lbs, which is just nutz! Anything less than 3.5lbs is light.

I have that lid in the Shark video.
Pros:
Very comfy
Shield has the best optics I've ever had the pleasure to use. I have the clear and the iridium blue.
Graphics are on par with Suomy. (the best IMO)
Cons:
The chin vent sticks in the closed position and wore away the enamel until it chipped, now it always get stuck in the closed position.
The fux suede on the bottom of the liner immediately developed cracks, only a few months old and it looks like its 6yrs. old.
The peripheral vision is the worst I've ever seen on any helmet.
Changing the visor is a huge PITA. It uses steel screws which fasten into a plastic tab, guess what? They strip over a short time. Once that happens the visor can no longer be attached.

The first time in 20yrs. of motorcycling I've had to return a helmet. Now I'm waiting on the word from the distributor.
I picked up a HJC FS-15 in medium and my only compliant is I should have gotten a small because they run a bit bigger than most. Easy fix since small-large use the same shell. So I got small cheek pads which are 5mm larger than the medium ones. I also used four foam helmet sticky pads from a Giro bicycle helmet on top. Now it fits perfect. If I really wanted to be picky I could fault the mirror visor, because it allows just as much light in as the clear visor. Considering that the Shark iridium was $90 bucks vs. $20 for the HJC I just got the dark smoked shield. A cool feature is the visor fits a couple different other models in the HJC line. Its ease of use is quick and easy, even easier than the Scorpion lids. The HJC FS-15 is an impresive helmet even if it were double the price. I look forward to their new line of helmets.

I'd go shoei... quieter I used to have the HJC Carbon... I think I've lost a significant amount of hearing from it... I swear it amplified the wind noise...

just my .02...

hope it helps

I like HJC's, they fit me really well.

I bought one of the FS-15's in blue CF a couple of months ago; very light and works very well. It will go nicely with my inbound BMW S1000RR...

Still sold on the Shoei RF1000 Caster. Plus you can buy it for relatively cheap right now. I didn't see any design styles of the RF1100 I liked.

Hogzilla,

Between the HJC and Shoei, I would go with the Shoei, particularly if you can get a RF1100 for $325 delivered. I have used both brands and my opinion is that the Shoei build quality is a bit higher, but I do think HJC makes a good helmet for the money.

Mind sharing where you are able to get such a good deal on Shoei's newest model?

You might also consider the Joe Rocket RKT-101, also avaliable in CF. They are built by HJC and have similar fit. I have a Carbon Fiber RKT-101 in transtone Red and absolutely love it.

Thanks for all the info! This really helps. I'm going to go out and try on lids again.

Macchiato, thanks for the detailed review!

Here is the place i found the helmets. If you click on the green link below the helmet they send you a link with the lower prices on the Shoei solids.

That is where I bought my RF1000. I have to say it is the best vented helmet I have owned. I have a Bell Moto8 claiming 11 vents and a Klim helmet with so much venting you can look inside and see out and an Arai TourX. The RF doesn't look like it is that vented but I can really feel the air on my head with the vents open.

Between those two, I'd go with an Arai, but I love the quantum series and have two.

My GF likes here Shoei as others have.

Back before I invested $$ into my brain bucket, I had (still have) and HJC...not a fan. I also have an old school simpson that really should only be used in race cars.

How do you like your lid to fit?

On both helmets, I've noticed the large fits just a little snug. Not bad at first but after having on for 5 minutes or so in the shop starts to feel restrictive. But an XL feels just a hair loose. Not too bad and very comfortable.

Just got my Shoei RF1000 Caster in black today from compacc.com ($269). Its very snug but I know it will loosen up after a few miles.

Love it. Love the looks and the fit. Can't wait to try it out!

Also got my Tour Master FSX Series II jacket and gloves. Sharp looking and very comfortable. I think the gloves will help make the bike grips more comfortable as they feel very small to me and add to hand fatigue, at least thats my hope.

BRING ON SPRING!!!!

If anyone didn't know, the reason these high dollar helmets are so cheap is because none of them meet the new Snell 2010 standards.

That being said, I just picked up an RF-1000 on sale. The fit and comfort are astounding compared to the HJC and Fulmer I previously used.

Regarding the helmet not fitting properly if you can get glasses on, that is dead wrong. How do expect spectacled riders to see? Fit with glasses is totally dependent on the padding design. I can slide my glasses inside the Shoei and it is extremely snug. I tried an Icon Airframe that fit almost as well, but the cheek pads prevented me from sliding my glasses on. That ruled out the Icon although I liked the graphics better. I haven't ridden with it yet, but the Shoei fits sooo well, worth every penny.

I still want that Icon helmet, I may just have to wear it on contact lens days.

modulars are nice. on a long trip through Shenandoah my buddy was able to have a few smokes while we were rideing and when we were stuck in RT-66 traffic he had the chin bar up to help stay cool. 95deg + car and road heat sucks for 3 hours.

With my RF1000 I can't put the helmet on with glasses on (which I don't think you should be able to anyway on a fullface) but I can get them on after the helmet is on my head.

Its a 2009 model and like everything else, they change year to year. If Snell has some new standards for 2010 I'm not concerned about that part. Because they still meet 2009 requirements and DOT specs. So its all good.

I tried on the Joe Rocked RKT101. Was a very comfy helmet. It fits similar to the Shoei and similar in sizing and comfort. Not a bad lid for the price.
