For any group buy efforts, please work with our sponsors. Seeking business for non-sponsors violates the BadWeB terms of use.

Thank you for understanding,

For starters, there isn't much available in the aftermarket parts and accessories for the 1125. I was looking around for a replacement swingarm spool and found a pretty good one, but I believe I can do one better. In fact I've been speaking to the owner of Motowheels about a variety of different Buell upgrades, hopefully he will take an interest in some of them. Kind of tough trying to get someone excited about a model line that is only two years old and now discontinued. Oh well, got to try anyway.

There are a couple things I would like to see in a good swingarm spool. The limitation is the size of the spool base on the swingarm. Lets just say a custom spool will be more compatible to receiving the stand hooks and will look more like a part of the bike.

The following constitutes marketing/market-research, a valuable privilege strictly reserved for our sponsors, the folks who fund the ongoing operation and maintenance of the site.

Blake - BadWeB custodian

Would any of you be interested in a very nice swingarm spool (delrin material) offered through a group buy? If this succeeds, no reason why it won't if the product is both good and priced right, then perhaps other upgrades will follow.

For what it's worth, I'm using a vortex spool with good results. I had to get a bushing to make up for the fact that the Buell screws are thinner than the Japanese bikes, but they are working perfectly.

The DHM products are fine for a trackday -- I use them on my '08 -- but don't work at all for servicing the tires because they are through-axle.

One of the reasons I went with the Vortex spools and a bit of handy work was I am able to use the same rear stand configuring for holding up the '08 for tire warmers, or servicing my '09.

I have an 08 specific "under-swingarm" pit-bull stand for servicing the 08.

What is it that you want these spools to do? What do you not like about the OEM spools?

I have two concerns:

1. How well will the insert (what size is it?) in the swing arm hold up in a crash? An aftermarket slider with the additional length shown above will impart much larger loads into the fastener and then into the insert than the OEM spool. I don't know what the insert in the swing arm is capable of withstanding without damaging the swing arm.

2. This thread began with "For starters, there isn't much available in the aftermarket parts and accessories for the 1125." There are many reasons for that.

With the small production runs that I can do, it is more difficult for a manufacturer like us to compete since we don't make parts for any of the Japanese brands and so we don't get the same economies of scale. We also do not manufacture anything overseas. It's all made here in the US.

Let me know what you feel "competitively priced spools" means to you and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks for the opportunity,
Keith

Well I can say that the oem spools do not work real well with the pit bull stand for spools because it is too easy to scratch up the swingarm with them. Maybe it is my technique, I dunno. About all I would like is an inside shoulder to keep the stand from scratching the swingarm. This would primarily be used for wheel service as I have the DHM spooled sliders.

Mike, if you have a 2008 model, there isn't any holes for them. It was an oversight on Buell's part. It was fixed on the 2009/2010 models though. You have several options, such as, 2008 pitbull stand specific to this model, DHM spools, but have fun changing tires with them, or make a set and drill holes in your swingarm.

I could certainly supply something like that. What is the OD of the OEM spools? Also, can you tell me what the fastener size is? What material would you want the spool to be made of?

Thanks,

Keith -

I'm pretty sure it's an M6 on the factory spools.

I see a couple options - a pure Delrin spool like GPI above.

Or a hybrid alum/delrin (like your other spools) - with the delrin button on the end which should be easier to replace.

any spool needs to have the shoulder on the inside as well (my swingarm is scratched from my pitbull).

As the swingarm is not flat at the mount point - is it possible to have an angled piece that goes flush with the angle, then the Alum or Delrin spool? To spread out any load from impact?

just thinking out loud. Would love to get another DHM slider on the back using the stock locations. like others i don't really like the through the axle solution when i have an 09. Though i have your slider up front and love it!

HTH!

Mike, yep, a bar thru the swingarm would work to lift it, but how do you take the wheel off when it's lifted like that?

Moose, yes these just replace the stockers. I bought these as a quick fix so I could safely lift my bike without damaging the swingarm.

Keith, I also have concerns over the length of the slider from GPI. Since I already own the set, I may just shorten them. Since these are 'universal', I don't know what they were designed to protect. On the 1125 swingarm, we simply don't need the extra length these offer. They could very well create too much of a moment upon impact and crack the boss. BUT, given the puny nature of the boss and fastener grade, ANY slider bolted to the stock location has the potential to break the swingarm under the right conditions. It may be best to use a low profile spool and a standard axle slider (with a longer length than the spool) so as not to commonly load the spool in a get off. Let the axle slider take the damage. Then again, given the geometry of the swingarm, the spool may have to be longer than your standard axle sliders just to allow for lifting by the stand w/o contacting the swingarm. A little forethought at the factory would have designed the swingarm a little differently to accommodate this situation I think. Strictly my opinion...

Bolt is definitely M6. GPI slider has an aluminum core, which is a requirement in my mind. I'd like to see a replaceable delrin or nylon button, which GPI does not offer (but at $25, one could argue the kit is designed to be replaceable). Depending on your design, I'd consider buying a set to replace these if the price was comparable to your fork sliders (~$35 a set). Like others have said, I'd like to see a set that utilizes the stock location so as to allow for rear wheel removal.

+1 on the Vortex spools. $23.95. I ordered the 6 mm black. They are aluminum and look great, work well with my spread out PitBull stand. No modifications or handiwork required. Unbolted the stock ones, bolted on the new ones. 15 seconds per side after I found the hex key.

Would anyone be so kind as to post a hig-res photo of the swing arm where the OEM spool bolts without the OEM spool? Also, a close up of the OEM spool with a few critical dimensions would be helpful.

Thanks,

Skully, I can mic my OEM spools in the morning and get you precise dimensions or send mine to you to duplicate.

The only thing I find odd about the OEM spools is that you can pull them off w/o having to take the screw out. If you wiggle them they come right off. Some kind of internal shoulder in the aftermarket spool and retainer washer set up would be better.

For any group buy efforts, please work with our sponsors. Seeking business for non-sponsors violates the BadWeB terms of use. Problematic content when read in context with the advertised "group buy" is highlighted in dark blue color font below.

Thank you for understanding,

Blake - BadWeB custodian

I see swingarm spools have generated some interest, in the case of the 1125, I believe the stock unit needs improvement. Actually, my interest in frame spools started last year when I tried to lift my 999R with a double bumper Pit Bull stand. The bike fell off the stand and I learned later from other 999 (early model) owners this very same thing has happened to them. I found a fix through Motowheels when I bought a billet chain adjuster, it had a mount for an 8mm spool. I installed it and the problem was fixed.

The stock 1125 spool has a button on the outside but no stop on the inside. Therefore the swingarm is subject to contact by the stand hooks, no good. The factory decided to install 6mm holes so that limits the size of the spool. Also, if you want your spool to be dual purpose, that is catch the stand hooks and also serve as a slider, the mount is only 6mm, very small to have so much load responsibility. I concur with 1324's assessment, the spool should not be so big or long to overwhelm the base or to act as a hole punch in the event of a tip over. Some dedicated frame sliders are designed to break in a tip over and grind down during a low side. I've experienced both several times. There is a tremendous amount of energy impacting the bike during a tip over. My 916 sustained major damage as a result of a tip over when the kickstand went through asphalt, there was nothing under the asphalt to stop the bike's fall. Its like lifting your bike up 4 feet or so and dropping it straight down on its side. At the time this occurred I did not have frame sliders installed. However, I did have them installed when I low sided the bike at the track. They did an outstanding job protecting the bike. On the other hand, I experienced a high speed low side on the street and when myself and bike slid we made contact with a slight berm of the shoulder. The bike then flipped and catapulted numerous times. People have said this might be the downside to frame sliders, but I still believe in them. So,the spool for the 1125 should be a dedicated spool, that is what I meant by "exact". Something made specifically for this bike. Unlike products like Cycle Cat (ex CC) or Rhino, I don't think the spool/slider combinations for the little 6mm swingarm mount on the 1125 are advertised to break off in the event of a tip over. However, I'm sure they are designed to grind down during a low side and that is well known.

I also agree with 1324's in another aspect, the spool should be complimented with a dedicated axle slider. I've already discussed this and the thought is to offer a custom fit axle slider, like the rhino slider. In fact I have them on my 999R. So now you have a dedicated spool and likewise an axle slider. There are likely axle sliders already available so its not something that is of interest to make at this time. I just don't think you can have a robust dual purpose spool (slider/spool) with only a 6mm bolt securing it. I suppose the aluminum core helps, but I think the best combination offering the best protection would be dedicated spools and sliders. The first spool/slider I bought for my 1125CR worked, but it looked really odd, not proportional to the swingarm and the base of the spool was much bigger than the swingarm spool mount. The Pit Bull spools I picked up after I returned the above product looked much better proportion wise, slightly too large, not bad but not just right. The above two products then put my wheels in motion regarding the possibility of making one just for the 1125. Obviously, the spools serve to assist in wheel removal, the axle sliders are designed to be simply removed.

Actually, I have the capability of having these made, in delrin or other materials. I didn't want to create any conflicts with anyone, but since I couldn't find the right product on the market, I figured it would be OK to make a spool on my own. I will continue to pursue this.

I've taken a keen interest in this bike, it has grown on me, beyond my expectations and its a blast to ride. But at the same time I'm saddened for those who lost their jobs as a result of the closure. I've given the bike a lot of thought and coming from a background of personalizing the Ducatis I have owned, I found out early there wasn't much available for this bike specifically. Therefore, I began to research a number of different aftermarket options. I got the ball rolling and I will continue to pursue it and see where it goes. Hopefully, you might see something come of this and by this time next year I will be responsible for making a few more 1125 upgrades available. I would like to see light weight wheels become a reality, among other things. Lets see what happens.
