Dean, nice work my man. Did you give any thought to a large oval to round exit? I think I once measured it would take about a 4 inch to fit over the two round small outlets. I never did it but thought I'd just press the large round pipe at the muffler to oval and weld to the muffler and let it transition to a round outlet.

Cory, it's coming along, just some minor details to square away tonight. I went with the slash cut again, but it's in the radius, so it should be close to what you wanted. I grilled the guy here at work about the slash cuts, he said he'd bring in the dyno runs, but it was only 2 hp lost out of a 106 hp engine. It might have been something else, but he tracks all the variables pretty closely.
I really need to look into a wideband setup soon, maybe after the first of the year. Gotta throw some $$ out for a new LCD flat panel, mine died last weekend, so there goes another $1500 or so. : (

Bob, I never really considered doing an oval outlet on the stock pipe. Resizing and redirecting the pipes was pretty much it for this project. I've got some other stuff in the works that you've seen some pics of, maybe going oval on that might be an option later. It might actually look kinda cool, we'll see on that one though. I need to hit up a buddy of mine and have him render out some autocad stuff for me, maybe I'll see if he can do that one for me too. He's not a cheap worker though. Last time I talked to him, he was getting something like $200/hour. Sometimes I think I'm in the wrong business.

Boogman, thanks, much appreciated. Tubing is cut to size now, just need to deburr it and clean up the marks for aligning it. Maybe a bit of polishing if I get some time. I'm going to try to get the pipe on the bike tonight or tomorrow morning and tack it into place. I'm hoping to get it set so I can ride it this weekend. Warm weather here is pretty well done. Monday will be my last decent day to ride for a while, so I really would like to get it finished and dyno'd again. I called Gateway HD and they have their permanent dyno operational now. We shall see.

Looks like the fueling is a lot closer this time, as in, not running rich. 60 mph shows 55-58 mpg, 70 mph gets 46-47 mpg indicated, 75 mph gets 43-44 mpg and 80 mph gets 40-41 mpg on the cluster. I have the 062 flash on mine, which is new from the last set of runs a couple of weeks ago. Mileage does not seem to have changed from the stock pipe, so that's the indicator I'm using. I guess the EGA machine on the dyno will give me something, but I still intend to get a wideband setup at a later date.
Gateway will not have a dyno operator over the weekend, so I'll be making another trip farther south to Surdyke HD instead. Same dyno (the mobile one) and same operator.

Video up shortly, 122.8 hp with the modified, 123.1 hp stock. Lots of variables I can't control, but I'd call it good at this point. Better sound, turned away from the rear wheel/brake/swingarm and NO LOSS OF HP. Hmmm. someone told me it couldn't be done. I feel kinda like.... Erik Buell!

Nicely done ... Persistence is a much under-rated quality. It's also oftentimes the secret to success ; )

Mind you, this was only my 2nd attempt and I destroyed zero pipes doing it. I was able to re-use the original pipe, I just changed the tubing.

Dean, great job on this! I told ya it would work out so long as we tried things and learned from a few mistakes.

Operation Muffled Thunder is now 100% complete.

I'll get with you sometime this next week and try to arrange a pick up time for my pipe. I am trying to find a sand blaster locally so I can strip it all down and paint it up nice.

Thanks again Dean.

Thanks guys.

It ended the way I expected, with minimal changes to my design ideas. 1" of tubing makes a difference. Just for reference, make sure the rear chamber is sealed off from the 2nd from the rear. Removal of the 2 S-pipes does NOT affect it's performance. Take that how you will.

I am confused w/ the HP ratings. That pipe sounds nice by the way. How is it that 146hp is claimed on the buell website. I also have seen this in a number of reviews. Can someone explain.

146 is the crankshaft horsepower rating. The dyno measures rear wheel HP, which is always less.

Vic, Crankshaft HP vs. Rear wheel to the ground HP.

Nicely done Dean, I've been watching from the start.

Claimed horsepower is 146HP at the Crankshaft. You lose horsepower through the drivetrain. This is why you see lower horsepower ratings from dyno's and stuff because they are measuring Rear Wheel Horse Power, or RWHP.

Nice work guys!
It's been fun following this thread...

I'll get a good pic of it either tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm very happy with the current results, except for a small paint run on the side. I guess the can was kinda cold when I shot the first spray and it pooled up some. I'll take some pics of it on and off the bike.
With the current setup, there is still a LOT of hp available with tuning. That will be the next step, but I would imagine the O.S.B. performance tune would get damn close to it's max output, maybe 145 hp at the wheel. I'd like to see, but it will have to wait until either someone else does it or next spring for me to do it.

Btw, the guy I ride with from work rode it today and he's pissed at me now. He says I've been sandbagging him all along, letting him run ahead of me. He was impressed, to say the least. He's got an RSV1000 Aprillia with the Ti race pipe and race tuned ECU and mine smokes it every time. He's thinking about buying a Buell now. heheh. : D

Dean - my last dyno run, I was getting 121-122 in 4th, last run was 5th and saw 127.
5th is closest to 1:1 drive ratio from tranny.
6th is a bit over and usually fries the dyno - too fast.

Just what I've seen from a dozen runs.

One last note on the dyno runs, the last one Dave ran for me today, the wheel was spinning. He felt it when it did it and it only peaked at 119 hp on that run. I asked him about strapping it down, he didn't want to as he's run 180+ hp bikes on this same dyno with no troubles. The other runs were at 121 and 122.8 hp. I think the 119 hp run was in 5th gear, but, it was slipping some.

Some higher quality pics. These are significantly scaled down, I have some that are much larger if anyone wishes to see them.

I can't believe he chooses not to strap the bike down on the dyno. there's no way 180 hp bike is not going to spin like crazy. no wonder your numbers come up low.

Those spools look very nice for 30$ I might have to invest adams.I am also glad to see you sticking to your ideas and making a modified exhaust.Everyone has their own designs, plans, parts and here you've stuck to your gut and have shown that a stock pipe can be modified with close to stock dyno results .I hope your orders fly.Now that adams has a design he should be very busy planning the next step.Building a great pipe at a great price. His own design!!

Well IMO your hp will be all over the place if not strapped and can also give a very rough looking graph.
