Figured I'd repost this with a relevant subject.

I feel that this software should be available. In the past it has been hard to find. I suggest grabbing a copy now.

(Removed pending ongoing conversations.)

It was a godsend, but I believe someone somewhere got ahold of it and started trying to sell it through Ebay or somesuch, or maye started trying to sell tunes usign it, or something like that. Basically making a quick buck off all their hard work, and it pissed them off. And rightfully so. So now it's no longer available.

With full respect to the authors for their work and accomplishments, that sort of "I'm taking my toys and going home" mentality seems a bit limited.

Obviously the people who wronged them already have copies of the software, and are only deprived of new versions. Those of us who are new to the scene are the most affected, as we can't get our hands on it at all.

And I have a hard time seeing how the Buell community at large has done anything wrong.

I've written back to Id073897 and look forward to hearing what he has to say.

How can you steal something that was free? And if I take your Free Idea, and expand on it, and I choose to charge for it, WTF?

Sigh.

The creator giveth, and the creator taketh away.

It's the way it is.

Sucks to be us.

What could be done though, is for someone to do all the work again and make a very similar product called something like ECMTune.

I have never looked at specs for the Buell ECM or cracked one open to see the EEPROMS in there, but in essence, you're just flashing data to an EEPROM. Just have to figure out what "language" it speaks over the serial interface.

Won't tell you what you need to know, but you can start your quest here:

My goal here was just to help folks get their hands on a useful tool that's hard to find.

Sheesh.

I was under the impression that ECM Spy won't work in the ECU for the 1125Rs..

If there is no EULA with the software, you can do whatever you want with it.

1125Rs require ECM Spy AND a separate tuning program.

Ok...then what is the optimal tuning system for it?
I definitely want a pipe and a tune on mine, what has been the best set up so far?
I am sure it is on a thread somewhere and I have just missed it....will check the knowledge vault too.....

http://www.ecmspy.com/download.shtml

With the end of the project, the software is not available for download any more.
ANY DISTRIBUTION OR HOSTING OF OUR SOFTWARE ON OTHER SERVERS IS PROHIBITED!

Not sure they can really stop it without a EULA, but whatever. It was released into the public domain without any restrictions from what I could see.

Public domain software refers to software that is not limited by having a copyright. It can thus be freely used, copied, or altered, because no one owns the rights to restrict its use. There are plenty of public domain software programs, but these are often confused with several other types of software, called freeware, which can be obtained for free, or shareware, which is usually obtained for a very small fee. Public domain software is the only type in most cases to which no limitations apply. Freeware may be copyrighted and shareware certainly is. This means it is not essentially in the public domain. Someone else can’t reproduce the software, copy it for other people, or copy it to sell without violating copyright laws.

The public domain is a large overview term, for any thing, usually a creative work, that can be freely used. For example, the Bible is a public domain work. It can be used, copied, sold, quoted, translated, or altered without infringing on anyone’s copyright or patent privileges. Examples of public domain software include the GNU/Linux software, which forms a part of many PC operating systems.

Lots of common sense on this thread that happens to be wrong.

Software is (for better or worse) licensed. You can have a license to use the software, but that does not give you rights to distribute the software.

The owner of the copyright for software may grant you specific licenses for how and where you can use the software. They may also grant you rights to redistribute software. But they are granting you rights.

"Freeware" is the worst, because authors will just say "this is freeware", which means nothing. Use it if you have no risk, but a big company if they are smart, won't touch it, as they don't know what rights the have or how long they will have them.

The "Artistic License" is better, as it tells you specifically and enforcably what your rights are. This license in particular (and the ones like it... i.e. the Apache license and the BSD License) are really the only "free" licenses. You can take the code and do what you want, and choose to share it or not. All you really can't do is claim it was yours and try and restrict it.

GPLV3 and the Affero public license are awkward. They aggressively seek to infect other things you build, to force those other things to be free as well. Good if that's your goal, a huge "unfreedom" if your goals are different. Decide for your self if those are more or less free, it's a religious debate at this point. And a tedious one at that. But at least you know the license.

The least free is code without a clear license. You may not be paying for it, but you don't have any idea what you are allowed to do with it either.

I suspect in the case of ECMSpy as well, there may be issues where they are tangled up with somebody elses intellectual property, and that's why it vanished. The DCMA is an awful set of legislation (but it's the law) that makes it really easy to find yourself on the wrong side of the rules. The fact that the law is to a large degree stupid and self contradictory doesn't make it any less of a threat to you. Especially when the lawyers in suits start calling.

There are volumes of complicated laws, if anyone wants a good patent / IP lawyer, I know a remarkable one here in Cincy, she is as smart as I have seen them come. But if you think anyone can sum up the issue neatly in less then 1000 pages, you are dreaming...

Thats all well and good, but when you install the software in question, it asks you for NOTHING for agreements. It's just click the installer, click next and go. There's no information about what you can/can't do with it, it said on their website that you use it at your own risk. It also said it was a collaboration between many people, although it didn't say who. I think the guy's name was Gunter or something like that runs/ran the site. What I don't get is, why even leave the site up if you're going to take the software away? If it were me, I'd pull the site entirely, but to each his own I guess.
I guess maybe follow the money trail and see where it leads? There had to be a reason for shutting it all down. If he got served a takedown notice for something proprietary, fine, let everyone know why. The way it is now, there's thousands of copies of the software out there with absolutely NO licsensing agreement or EULA attached. To me, it was given away and is in the public domain. The horse is out of the barn and there's no fence to keep it anywhere near it.
It could have been released with a GPL licsense or even creative commons. Look at the software, there's NOTHING.

there's NOTHING

Then, technically, you have no rights to it, either for distribution or for execution.

Nothing stops you from using it though. And nothing stops you from writing your own software and doing what you want with it.

You can fetch the eeprom with ecmspy, but the fuel maps and timing maps, as well as the other maps, look all jumbled up on my version. I was able to clear trouble codes with it. Had the IAC and low fuel codes, not sure if they are new or old.

Ok some thoughts years ago I wrote a simple set of programs that comunicated with a PLC from a pc.

the communication format is serial data
it is not RS232, If some one wants to tackle this the folks at B&B electronics
make various serial devices that would allow you to capture data exchange between the ecm and the spy computer, with some effort and time it would be possible to read and write the ecm

typicaly a data transmission would fall in to a format, reading the various sensors would likely be reading a stack of addresses. the addresses would b in "hex"
and the data would be in hex as well.
once the format and some commands are known the rest can be found by hacking the unit, the problem is time....

Wasn't the issue with ECMSpy being HD contacting the author with a cease and desist regarding modifying the licensed code in the bike?

If anyone would like to discuss the distribution of this software or serve me with legal papers, please PM me off-thread.

EcmSpy is copyrighted software and the copyright owners did not grant you any right for distribution. I ask you to remove the software and the link pointing to it IMMEDIATELY. I will also inform your provider about this copyright infringement.

Thank you for your understanding.
