I bought a new 1125R the end of October 2008. My problem is that the cap on the rear brake reservoir came off and was lost on the road.
I figured that should be a warranty issue and be covered. This happened because of nothing I did. I called dealer they looked at it and said they would see what they could do. They mentioned that they don’t have to remove the cap when they service it because it calls to check level and its see thru reservoir. A couple days later they informed me can’t warranty it. I tried another dealership same results.
I called Buell customer service which is Harley Davidson customer service. I spoke and argued for a half hour with a man. He said that because I did the 600 mile service instead of having it done at a dealership, it was my fault. I am a stickler for following directions and do things exactly by the book. In the service manual, it doesn’t say to remove the cap so I know I didn’t touch it. The book says check fluid level which is a visual thing. The stand that this guy took was the book states to check critical fasteners, and this would fall under that category. To me, and most others, that means things like axle bolts and such. I don’t believe that a plastic cap is a critical fastener.
This customer service guy also would not tell me any one else I could contact about my problem.
They don’t sell just the cap. I have to buy the complete reservoir for about forty bucks.
I’m asking for others opinion on this. Am I way off or should they just give me the cap like I’m asking? Also, does any one know who I may be able to contact about this other than Harley?
Thank you for your thoughts/opinions.

I would say pre-ride checks and PM are on the rider/owner to keep things from rattling loose and falling off. Anyone who owned a tuber knew ALL about that.

Forty bucks seems a bit meager to be ruffling a lot of feathers.

Tough call
I thought I had a problem when my idler froze and burned .100" off my belt.
Called BMC CS and told them, heard later it was a topic of discussion at a morning meeting.

Then I realized "I" had been the last one to touch the offending bolt.
I called BMC back and told them not to scream at anyone there, it was my F/U.
I paid the 160 for the belt.

I say it is warranty. I had a Ducati that lost a rear foot peg. Ducati covered it. I think this is a similar type failure.

What like your collecting these things.

The stand that this guy took was the book states to check critical fasteners

Ask him to show you where the critical fasteners are listed in the manual.

Ask them:
Why can't they sell you a cap by itself for a reasonable price like all the other manufacturers do? It's obvious they manufacture the part separately from the reservoir, so there is no one to one relationship of parts.

$40 is not a reasonable price.

Easy answer.

It is not a warranty item and they have no express or implied duty to replace it. That's simple.

It has nothing to do with who did the maintenance.

The flip side is it would be nice if they'd just give you one and tell you to be more careful.

Drop me a NOTE with your VIN and full contact info . . . . I **may** ( I need to check) have a spare.

I agree with Court, if a cap or something fell off of mine I would accredit it to my own stupidity for not conducting good preventive maintenance. I can see both sides of the fence and thanks for offering to help him out with it Court.

One of the things that I used to hate about the Army was the PMCS *Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services* procedure. It takes time, it's by the operator manual and very specific. A few years into the game and as I climbed in rank and began to see how the mechanics worked off the PMCS procedure and how parts are ordered *that could go better*. I started to adapt a PMCS procedure into my autos. I even made a checklist for my SS and GN. I haven't got around to creating one for the 1125r yet but I always try and do a half @ss one before I ride.

I have been the victim of this on my GN at the drag strip often as much as I hate to admit it. Primarily adjustments made to the wastegate and forgetting to lock the threaded wastegate bolt. Or leaving the fuel pressure regulator vaccum line off after checking and adjusting fuel pressure, or even blowing the intake charge pipe off after cleaning the MAF off and forgetting to tighten it down all the way. Leaving the cap off the alcohol tank *bad idea*. We just get silly sometimes and overlook things. I empathize with you JW and hopefully Court can help you out. Also note I am not claiming that it was directly your fault, it probably just fell off.

Hands down BMC offers replacement parts at a fraction of its competitors. This is one area where BMC shines IMO.

I do agree that the cap should be offered by itself. It sure is bad news when you lose a cheap part and are told that you have to buy the entire unit.

Happened with my kickstand on the XB. I broke something and had to buy the whole kickstand--but I believe it was due to the change in kickstand design. I had the old design and the only had the new. Makes sense I guess.

Whatever . . . . I've got the cap so when/if I get the info I'll fire it off to him.

He may have posted and gone ahead and bought one.

If someone sees this guy in another thread let him know I have him covered.

Tow hooks? nope. Bracket for the passenger pegs works grreat! A bit of a problem if you dont run with the passenger pegs, however.
