Repeating in one post all info gathered to date...

As of September 16th...

The updates are live in the US, not something a dealer has to wait for, although many are not yet aware. As soon as a US dealer has his/her Digital Tech machine online (and many are permanently on-line), the download is automatic as of earlier today, and it is then available to whatever 1125R is hooked up to the machine.

Mixture is not richer, it's now correctly done at exactly the right time and the spark map is now right, which was the biggest issue. The bikes will not only run better, they will be cooler and the fuel mileage will be significantly better. ... It is a very good update. Just do it!

And more excellent information from OdinBueller at Liberty H-D/Buell...

This is for the DTII update released on September 16, 2008. It only affects 2008 models (all 2008 Helicon models are eligible). The 2009 models ship from the factory with these corrections already in place. No word on this being a product program as of yet, so there may be labor charges to get this done. Shouldn't take more than 0.5 hour including test ride to set the AFV.

The 2009 models have a completely different set of calibrations due to the O2 sensor relocation and new fuel injectors.

This re-flash is not (so far) associated with a product program that can be referenced on h-dnet.com. Here's what the servicing dealer needs to do...

Update Digital Technician II to version 2.002.

From the first DTII screen, click on "What's New".

Scroll down to the "Re-flash" section, and it will show all the updated 1125 calibrations.

PM or call me if anyone has any questions.

Hi I work for SkipFordyce;Buell sales and we are about to update any 08 1125R's we have remaining in stock...It depends on the shop if they are gonna charge unless it comes under a product campaign pretty soon..but we wont charge as part of the deal on the remaining bikes we have. I will keep you posted what I hear on the web, HD-NET,etc. Hey thanks to all of you with these posts, it has helped me immensely in Buell sales(#1 in So Cal now)and giving excellent customer service/service to our loyal customers and new customers as well. Thanks again to this forum, Buell Techs(HD Dealers), and BadWeb. thanks to you all...this is the best and most informative site that has helped me more in Buell info and sales as we are sponsor like so many buell dealers.

The CHARGE is an INACCURATE statement based upon archives....which seems to find a quicker home to when the going gets questionable.

Cut the $hit. I heard enough of it today in two hours dealing with HD dealerships within a 200 mile radius.

There should not be a charge to any 08 1125 owner not satisfied...and only asking for this reflash prior to...not going there just yet. I to, have to bite my tongue now and then.

The few that are not completely satisfied to within reason will not just accept such folly.

This flash should not be under this thread's topic as that ONE was not considered solved. Now proved such, long before this latest flash came about.

Let's just get this done right and for the least amount of effort by the owners of 08's, this web's efforts and the money BMC/HD has and/or will spend in such simple resolve.

Why?...This mimics 0502 flash. It also contradicts whats already been stated.

Please, mm

The software itself is free, however, there will be a labor charge to do this. Until there is a Product Program issued that states that H-D/Buell will cover the labor to do this, then that leaves the labor cost to the customer. I know this is not a popular fact, but I don't want anyone surprised with a bill after the update is done.

Keeping in mind, H-D/Buell have issued several updated OEM calibrations in the past that have been free except for the labor to download & test ride the affected motorcycle.

I just called Buell customer service (414-343-4056). The update is supposed to be completely free. I have an appointment at the shop in an hour to get my update. If charged I'm supposed to call CS and they will talk to the dealer to eliminate the charge.

At least that's what I was just told on the phone.

I agree with everyone, that the labor should be covered. Calling in to get an authorization for labor coverage on this re-flash for all bikes affected will not only bog down dealer service departments, but the phone lines for Customer Service & Tech Services too.

dropped off 1st 1125R for dumping all the coolant out the weep hole that protects the engine oil system from water ingress. having the 12500 valve clearance check done also. i expect the water pump seal replaced at no charge and to pay for the clearance check.

Smoke ,
How did you first notice the coolant leak ?

From from odd water stains on both sides of the water pump ?

I've been noticing these stains on mine , did you say yours is being service for this ?

I'm having mine looked at on saturday , getting the reflash , and my Buell emblem for the new clutch hub ( that they forgot ) is in .

PM me if so , I dont want to pirate this thread , Ken.

Re; Charge for the updated flash: I just had my re-flash done this morning. No charge, and who pays never came up.

When I called my dealer they first said they had no service notice authorizing any work for my VIN, but when I asked them to check DTII for updates they looked a little further and found SOMEthing that shed some light. I got the impression that Harley/Buell issued a notice of some kind just this morning (at least that's what I was told) and it popped up when they drilled into it. They offered to update mine as soon as I could get it there. They apparently had to talk with Buell tech for details, but it got done in about an hour and the bike is GREAT!!

Wow, a lot of shops are either loosing labor hours or getting authorizations from Tech Services to get paid for this. I hope they aren't trying to get this through the previous product program, as if the VIN comes up twice, they'll reject the labor payment.

This is going to be interesting to say the least going forward...

told by the dealer that warranty wouldn't cover the flash, unless there was some driveability issue. It took me hounding them about the update and having them look at this web-site etc. for them to even acknowledge this issue.

So I told her about the surging in the low RPMs and she set the appointment. My next step is going to call customer service about this, because its ridiculous that we would have to pay to have an update on something that is a known issue by BMC.

If they want us to make up issue in order to get them to hook the bike up thats fine I can play that game.

This is the same dealer that looked into my boiling gas, they couldn't find anything. So after it happened on the way from from that appointment I make a video with sound of the boiling gas sound. They still haven't worked that out(sorry about the rant I'm little pissed off) AS I have been talking with them about this flash since Monday.

I went in today to have mine done. The Digital Tech would not communicate with my bike, after a couple of hours tinkering with it they made some phone calls and I will have to wait until Monday to get it done so we can talk directly to Buell's Trouble Shooting guys.

There is a Buell Dealer in Joplin, MO that has done an ECM update and I might drive down there to see if they can do it. Anyone else have this problem yet? And yes the techs went through the AC power. Sooo... early morning ride down to Joplin!

I just got this at our dealer in California and I have been on it for a while to not charge anyway:

Important information to be shared with all Buell dealers and customers of 2008 1125R models.

In the interest of customer satisfaction, Buell is offering a no cost calibration upgrade [Buell Product Program 0505] on all 2008 1125R models built prior to July 18, 2008. Its important to understand that this is not a safety issue but rather part of our continuous improvement efforts. Please contact the dealer and all appropriate staff informing them of this important customer offer [see Buell Service Bulletin B-081].

The calibration is now available in the dealerships through the Digital Technician tool. Please note that the no cost offer expires two years from the date of the program release, which would be September 16, 2010.

I don't understand why they are limiting the update to Buells built PRIOR to July 18th. (Did they cease production on that date?) I may be mistaken but all the 2008 1125r Buells can use this update correct? The only Buells that HAVE this update are the 2009 1125r/cr's from what I understand. Hmmm. Oh well, mine's a June baby like myself.

Wish me luck tomorrow guys, I will keep everyone posted and hopefully Cycle Connection's Digital Tech can talk to my bike tomorrow so I can get the flash.

OK, this has officially been announced as a Product Program! WooHoo! h-dnet failed to put this notification up on either the welcome page or the Service page. You have to search for Buell Service Bulletins to find the following document;

2008 1125R CALIBRATION PRODUCT PROGRAM 0505

Purpose
Buell Motorcycle Company has recently developed calibration
updates for the 2008 1125R models. These updates provide
improved cold start, driveability, fuel mileage and
reduced heat.
In the interest of customer satisfaction, Buell Motorcycle
Company has elected to initiate a product program (Product
Program 0505) to update the ECM calibration on affected
vehicles.

Motorcycles Affected
This Product Program applies to all 2008 Buell 1125R models
built beginning of model year October 29, 2007 to end of
model year July 17th, 2008. A VIN list specific to vehicles
shipped to your dealership is available via h-dnet.com and is
no longer attached to mailed bulletins. This list may be found
by following this path:
h-dnet.com/Service Toolbox/Product Campaign and
Open VIN lists. Select Product Program 0505 campaign
to view VIN list.
NOTE
If the vehicle does not appear on your dealer VIN list, refer to
Safety and Product Campaign History by VIN link to verify if
vehicle is affected.

Customer Notification
Buell Motorcycle Company will send a letter to registered
owners, in the United States, notifying them of this non-safety
related condition and instructing them to contact their dealer
for the replacement service. A sample of the customer letter
is attached. Customers outside of the United States market
may not receive this notification.

IMPORTANT NOTE
Please be advised that the services delivered under this
product program will no longer be rendered at factory
expense after two years from the date of this bulletin.

Required Dealer Action
ECM Calibration

NOTE
After connecting to the vehicle but before beginning the calibration
reflash, connect the AC power adapter to the Tech
Link II to ensure correct system communication.
1. On vehicles that are covered under the product program,
verify the current calibration using Digital Technician II
and reflash the calibration if updated calibration is not
present. See Table 1 for calibration numbers.
2. System functions included with new calibration:
● Improved cold start
● Improved driveability
● Improved fuel mileage
● Reduced heat
● Accessory port is controlled by the ECM and will be
turned off if the ECM reports a deficit on the charging
system. Do not install accessories directly to the
battery or anywhere else on the bike except the
accessory plug.
● ECM will now control cooling fan operation independently
and is regulated by coolant temperature and
battery voltage.
● Idle RPM is now impacted by inputs from coolant
temperature and battery voltage. This may raise the
RPM slightly if the programmed conditions are met.
Under normal operation the idle will remain at 1250
RPM.
● It is normal for the fuel pump to cycle periodically to
maintain fuel pressure after key off. The amount of
time allowed for this has been reduced from 20 minutes
to 10 minutes maximum.}

Sorry to everyone on the confusion on this whole thing. h-dnet has provisions to see service bulletins as soon as you log in, or at the top of the Service section, but that was not the case with my setup (any one else in the dealer network had to hunt this bulletin down in the service document viewer?) It's awesome that Buell is stepping up and making sure that everyone is satisfied with their 1125R, but the roll out of this product program by H-D has been less than stellar. I hope future bulletins go a bit more smoothly.

Chris

I got the flash done! Cycle Connection in Joplin, MO has a GREAT Buell section and some great techs! Thanks Tom!

Also while I was there I picked up a Kick Ash windscreen (Looks great BTW!) and spent some time talking with the HOG riders and showing off the bike. Cycle Connection is by far one of the best dealers I have been to yet and the update was free!

After the update I noticed right off the bat that the idle was improved, the stumble with easy driving in town is barely even noticeable, the bike feels more powerful. sustained RPM at 75-80 MPH for 150 miles back home was a few hundred RPM lower than going down there. And the fuel economy is vastly improved. Heat....not sure, mine never had heat issues that I noticed. All in all, well worth the ride and wow...I am speechless. Thanks Buell! And thanks Cycle Connection!

Got to love Hampton Roads Harley Davidson, called them this morning after seeing the info above about the Product Program and asked them again about getting this done. Their response was that they didn't have the update yet, there is nothing in the digital technician and there is nothing in the computer. They also said that they hooked up another 1125r yesterday and nothing happened. So I will just have to wait.

So I call their sister dealership Southside Harley, and ask them about it and they say to come on in, it only takes about 1/2 hour and I can wait for it. Southside Harley knew all about it, and were ready to help. They booked me an appointment for Tues. I feel lucky that at least one of the dealers around here is on the ball.

I called my dealer and set up an appointment for the re-flash. They called me back later and told me that I already had the re-flash. "Hmm, pretty sure I don't." For some reason Buell or H-D did not notify dealers of the re-flash. So I had to convince them to check out Bad Web and see that there actually is a new re-flash available. So I ended up getting it done today and the changes are very noticeable for me. Too bad customers are more on top of things than the dealers.

I am pretty certain that all dealers got a fax Wednesday describing this update. I have seen the fax at 2 of the 4 dealerships I tried to get the reflash from.

I finally got mine down today. It was a struggle - but I finally found a dealership that did not want an appointment a week out.

The results: HOLY COW! Far and away, the bike is everything I ever hoped it would be. In spite of the crappy weather here today, I got in about 100 miles. There was no stumble at all. I am looking forward to finishing out the tank to see what it did for fuell economy.

i wish my dealership got that fax wednesday, i'll be sure to look for it.
i searched for a new recall on hdnet thursday for a customer and did not see a product program for his bike. i typed in his vin# and found only the tranny recall. i dug a little deeper in the service document reader and came up with the reflash that affected models built prior to 04 april, his bike was built after this date. this was all very unfortunate because this really aggravated this customer who happens to be a friend of mine. long story short everything shows fine on hdnet the bulletin is there 0502, the dealership can process this through the computer if he were to bring his bike in monday, except monday he leaves for weeks and is taking his bike, i'm not going to be able to take care of him.
i've seen quite a few posts of irritated customers that found out about this reflash a day or two before the dealer's computer showed it on hdnet - bottom line is, when the service writer at the dealership plugs your vin# into hdnet and it does'nt show that your bike has a product program listed, the dealership won't get paid and will want to charge you for any work to be done that's the way it goes. now that this service bulletin is at the top of the page of buell service bulletins on hdnet any buell dealer in the country can see it and do the work accordingly. anyway, don't write off your dealer as being incompetant or unhelpful because you got faster than light info from our beloved badweb two days before the dealers biggest info source showed it as a service bulletin.
hopefully anybody who feels slighted by their dealer can understand now how the system works, and go get their reflashes done this week without any hard feelings, it'll show up now!

Tripp - I'm not necessarily writing them off. It just that when 2 dealers that are owned together, and in the same town not 30 miles from each other. Shouldn't they be on the same page? When one has no idea and the other one knows all about it and is extremely helpful with the solution, the bottom line is that the two dealers should communicate.

If the current dealer I was using is not going to be helpful, I will use the other one even if it is a slightly longer drive.

BTW - the dealer that knows about this didn't even ask for the VIN.
