Well guys, NASTY tank slapper at ~80kph threw me right over the bars today. I slid about 50 feet, then rag-dolled about another 50. Came to a stop and watched the bike slide at least another 150 feet down the road...

Overall I am ok. ATGATT worked for me. Its true what they say about textiles though...good for one crash only...

Now the bike...all I can say is wow. These things crash like a champ.

Primary cover ground down pretty good will need to be replaced.
The pods WORK took the major brunt of the slide NOT A SCRATCH ON THE FRAME.
Bar end and lever scraped up but cosmetic only.
Shift lever bent and scratched the supports a bit, can be bent back but I will replace anyways.
Rear left passenger peg ground down to a nub, heel guard cracked (anyone remove theirs and wanna sell it to me cheap?)
Swingarm got a silver dollar sized scuff, cosmetic only..

Pics to follow if you guys want...

Congrats on being here to tell about it and in short fashion. It's not too often that someone gets to say "I crashed today"........let alone type it.

Please do post pics of bike / gear damage.

Do you know what caused the tank slapping?

Good thing you follow ATGATT or you would be typing from a hospital bed while they measure out your skin grafts. PLease post lots of pics.
Good thing your ok. And its good you bike slid in stead of tumbling.
What caused you to crash?

I am still trying to dissect(sp?) the crash. I was in the city, fairly hard right hander followed by an easy left. Leaned over, half off the bike for the right, in the left lane, passed a car in the right lane, switch into the right lane, back on the bike transitioning over for the left and on the throttle. BAP BAP BAP violent tank slapper, GRUNT on the ground...

I have taken this road probably 500 times this year. I think i make have crossed a painted crosswalk as I transitioned.

I have worried since day one about how light and twitchy the front end gets on the 1125 when on the throttle. A steering damper was in the plans for the winter..even more so now.

Mr. Buell and the Elves...I know you are not a fan of the damper but PLEASE consider it as stock equipment on the 1125R.

I am convinced when I go down it will be because of something painted on the street. Nasty, slippery stuff. There has to be a better way of marking the roadways..

Sorry to hear of your mishap....I understand your head scratching as to the exact cause of the wreck. I had a relatively minor one almost a year ago on the XB & I still can't pinpoint exactly what caused it. For lack of a better explanation, I have basically resigned to the cause being an over-zealous rider meeting tricky, off-camber corner.

what kind of gear were you wearing, exactly?

I know you are not a fan of the damper but PLEASE consider it as stock equipment on the 1125R.

maybe on the 2010 1125RR? Along with programmable conventional shift light and gear indicator.

Save the security system.

Most will be happy to pay the extra few hundred for these upgrades...

Gear:
- Joe rocket textile wore through left shoulder, left sleeve looks like it went through the shredder
- Speedrag pants tore a seam and shredded the bottom left leg a little
- Scorpion gloves burst a couple seams probably easy repair
- Sidi boots ground the vent off the left boot, still minty

Thanks for the pics...glad you are okay.

Go Oilers!

Thats why that textile gear is so cheap. Its disposable.
Surprisingly it doesn't look that bad. Little bit of duct tape and some jb weld and it will be good as new.

Glad you are ok... bike can be fixed relatively easily. Looks like Woodcraft needs to offer case covers for the 1125R.

There is no substitute for leather.

Looks like the mirror image of my TWS crash... except my swingarm and footpeg were unscathed thanks to the Dark Horse Moto sliders. My front fairing was scuffed, though--- yours looks untouched... nice.

BTW, how's your helmet? My Suomy is scuffed (visor and chin bar). To be safe, I'm replacing (this time, a Shark RSX!). Man, all this stuff isn't cheap...

But glad to see that you're totally OK... what else matters?

it's called aggregate........all they have to do is mix in some sand with that paint that they use. I already think that stuff is tough enough to walk on....let alone ride on.......especially when wet. fughetaboutit!

First, glad you are OK. Sorry about the bike, but it least it can be fixed.

The gear does get expensive doesn't it. I just messed up my brand new Shoei RF-1000. My second in a few months. I like the helmet alot, so I guess I'll get another, but dang it adds up.

I had a nasty experience on the painted crosswalk lines on foot once, those things are extremely slick right after a fresh rain.

http://www.simplemachines.org/ would be a good option. Threaded forums, easy to break into sections, admin functions are actually pretty intuitive and easy to use.

If the admins here want to look into it, then a conversion would be needed. http://www.cartalkcanada.com/discus_to_smf_1.0.txt is a php script to convert it.

There's a HUGE range of customization/mods for SMF.

G'day Ed glad you were able to walk away from it, although it's always sad to see someone has barked their baby. but it has come through it extremely well not many brands of bike would be rideable after an 80mph throw down.

I would almost guarantee it would have been loss of grip on the paint then the bite again on the tarmac big twitch into tank slap allover.

The pirelli's on the Buell are the worst tyre i've ever ridden on for losing grip on paint pilot powers are better but still slip a bit and the 207 dunlops are the best on paint but as an allround play hard on the weekends and commute all week the pilot powers are my favorite.

regards Brett

Well glad you made it out ok, These bikes do crash very well its pretty incredible. i would know unfortunately ive had a mishap this year with a 80 yr old cagger and my bike was pretty solid after t-boning a pickup at 20mph.

good luck with it and good thing your smart and wear full gear.

Ah...that was an 80 kilometer per hour crash - not an 80 mph one. Neither bike nor rider would have fared so well in an 80 mph throw-down.

Yeah, I thought it was mph too and was amazed at the lack of damage.

Still, a 50 mph step-off is a recipe for pain.

Condolences and congratulations, Darcy.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. Yes we use the metric system up here in Canada lol...still tell my body that today....man am I sore...

As for tires I am running Pilot Power Race take offs so I don't think that the tires had anything to do with it. Pretty sure a steering damper would be the remedy so it doesn't happen again.

Appleton already emailed me back (great service thanks!) If I fix everything its $700. The swingarm is $340 of that. So $450 and some touch up paint and Persephone will be minty fresh. Thats less than my insurance deductible....
