>>>I'm not normal.

No problem . . . neither is Ron (The Elf pushing the 1125CR).

At the risk of being cast from the masses, that Sportster looks like a rolling committee decision made by folks grasping to recapture their profit picture. If I won one, I'd sell it on e-Bay.

"At the risk of being cast from the masses, that Sportster looks like a rolling committee decision"

No doubt about it Court, looks like a parts bin special.

Now, the Storz product would be a keeper for me.

The new CR, "in the flesh" above, is positively cartoonish. IMHO, of course.

I'd opt for taking advantage of its shorter & more practical gearing....then dressing it with R bodywork. Again, just my opinion, tho', yes, I am noted for my exceptionally good taste....

I like them both. I'm particularly excited about the CR. I'm on an 05 Triumph Speed Triple now and the CR seems pretty similar. I like the looks of it. I'm not sure if I like the clubman bars. I hope to see the standard bars on it.

>>>I'm with you, Court. I don't see the attraction.

I see the appeal and have no issue with the folks who dig it.

I was bonkers (as in bought 3 in one day) over the older Sportsters. I totally dug the XR750 look. This is NOT that look. In fact, I loved my XR-1000 . . . the look of the dual carbs (You can always tell an XR rider by their knee hanging out), the look of the high pipes . . and the sound . . . ah, the sound . . . I've, many times, compared it in the written word with the sound that came from stomping on the accelerator of a 389 cubic inch GRO with 3-2bbl carbs. . . I know . . I'm showing my age.

The Sportster was also a fun bike at $4,000. At $10,000 . . . . well it just falls short in all catagories. From time to time I get the bug to buy a "base model" Sporty . . . I go, look and realize there is no such thing anymore.

It's a cute bike that satisfies the need to own a Harley-Davidson and get in as cheaply as possible. In terms of handling, brakes and power well . . . . you make the call.

You buy a Sportster to have a Harley-Davidson. . PERIOD.

Court - I'm also disappointed about the lack of a 'base model' anymore. Low or Custom, 883 or 1200 are your only options anymore.

When I bought mine in 2004, I got the 1200R because it was, for the most part, a basic sportster with the big engine and dual front discs. Then I cafe'd the crap out of it.

If you put an 1125R, a 1125CR and an XR1200 in front of me and told me that I could have one of them for free I would probably stand there until I passed out trying to decide. They are all perfect! I love the wind coverage of the R, the naked looks and taller bars of the CR and the flat track style of the XR. Maybe if I could just settle for 2 out of 3.

If those were $3995 like the old days Court's remembering they'd have production sold out for quite a while. But you forgot to add the full trade in value they did back then as well. It's not the old XR, but how many truly want exact recreations of classics? Well, ones that own/owned the originals and want to relive the day. They are stretching a bit trying to tie it to the dirt track heritage. More of the modern XLCR. Wasn't it Nick Ienatsch who had articles on making sportsters into XLCRs way back when? Improving ignition, suspension and converting it to use one of them new fangled 'Halogen' headlights?

I like it, of course i liked the XLCR recreations from back then as well. It's probably the most sporting sportster in quite a long time.

Does this mean they're considering selling the XR1200 in the United States?

That's been the rumor for some time. With the acquisition of the XR1200 trademark it's strongly believed to be coming. It will be interesting to see how it rates against the Nightster sales in the sportster ranks.

2 different classes of bikes, IMO. The XR will satisfy those folks who the Sportster for what it should have become on its own (sort of). The Nightster will satisfy those folks who embrace what the Sportster is, but are too lazy to personalize it themselves, lol.

Give the typical "HD" image, combined with the short life span on the VRSC Street Rod, I would bed that the Nightster will outsell the XR.

Yup, as unfortunate as it sounds. The nightster will outsell the XR1200. The Vrod Street Rod was the best bike HD ever built IMHO. With the XR1000 being a very close 2nd.

I think the XR appeals more to non-HD riders. Of course if it does come out here, for all the magazines raving about it now will only complain about the engine once it hit US production. It is their way.

Im figuring we will see it as a mid year model this year.

My bet is it will be hailed as "The Best Sportster Ever"... and sales will be abysmal. Being a Sportster junkie, I'll own one because it really is the best Sportster so far- FI, rubber-mounted, real brakes, upside-down forks, rear-sets, Buell-based engine upgrades, great handling, cool styling, up-swept exhaust, and performance rubber. It will look great next to the XB12R in the garage.

I would have expected to see a manufacturer's plate on that Sportster.

Since it has standard WI plates, does not that mean it has gone through the certification for a US vehicle?

If so, then it would seem to be ever so much closer to hit the US showrooms.

I agree with Junkie.

Definitely the best sporty ever mass produced, but I doubt that the faithful will get it.

And I don't expect I will be trading Lil' Blackie in on one,
know what I'm saying?

Yes, it probably won't best the nighters in numbers but it would be nice if it could make an impressive showing. I tend to end up liking the market failures it seems. Every bike I've owned has been not well respected other than by the cult like owners. I liked (still do) the TT and it is the Rodney Dangerfield of the XB line.

I found the VRSCR odd when it came out and thought it too heavy and too much money. I've come to appreciate them more since they were discontinued and it would be the only Vrod i'd get. Picture crossing the Streetrod with parts from the Nightrod Custom and VRSCF along with the power of the Destroyer. Give it the Destroyer paint scheme and call it the Destroyer Escort. Now if they do that maybe MOCO can throw this poor boy one for the idea.
