WOW is that metal specs on the valves? I am going to do a tear down when I get my bike back, that does not look good, I do not even know what to think or say. Mike

is it sand or a copper looking metal stuff?

mine has copper looking stuff all over the top of the frame and inside the tail section. although it doesnt have it in the intake. and mine only has 1 mile on it. i just figured it was shavings from the manufacturing.

Yeah I've seen the copper stuff on the left side, one fastener looked rusted, light fog on the cases.
I'm gonna check my airbox now.
Just had the seat off and thought about it but didn't.

I did check mine.

The airbox had minor amounts of sand and small gravel in it on the surfaces before the air passes through the filter.

Removing the filter and looking down in the downdrafts it is clean on all surfaces downstream of the filter including the butterflies. I then got a flashlight out and looked at the intake valve surfaces and they were clean as well.

I removed the filter to blow it clean and to vacuum debris that collect in the airbox at the 600 mile service. When I replaced the air filter I noticed that you have to start from one side (left or right) and stretch it over to the other side. Do not seat it all the way down on one side because that will result in a gap on the other side. To check it for proper fit run your finger on both sides to "feel" if there is a gap. I guess the filter is made just a tad short so that it does not "bridge up" from being too long.

If only we had the service manual.

I'm at 2,700 miles.

If I were you Peter, I'd wipe it nice and clean and be aware when you put the filter on again and check it again in 500 miles or so.

Wow. That is disturbing. I havn't opened my airbox up, but I can't think of a better one now. Let's hope this is an anomaly and also hope that the engine in the pics is okay.

Kinda curious. From the looks of it the filter is either not filtering properly for yours or is improperly installed. Clean it up and ensure it's installed right.

I am not sure what to say...
So what I am about to say may be out sheer desperation...

I am just sick and tired of this...
I have been having issues pretty much non-stop since late spring of last year (and that is not to say it was all smooth sailing before then)...
The engine on my XB12R crapped out on me at 15000mi; new crank, pistons, connecting rods, cylinders, primary cover and over two months in the shop. Although I am ever so thankful for Buell for covering it via will-call.
To eliminate pinging, and in hopes of a longer lasting trouble-free engine I bought the 1125R. Not to mention I wanted to support Buell and their efforts...
Pinging was indeed non-existent on the 1125R...
But there are PLENTY of issues:
-mirrors cracking
-various engine codes/O2 sensor acting up
-lack of power (makes the xb12r seem like a bullet)
-virtually no rear brake (please lets not get into the "ethics" of using the rear brake)
-does not start when hot
-battery gave me a scare

And now this...

Perhaps the lack of power and the dust/sand are related.
Perhaps the, what looks like carbon build up, has to do with the O2 sensor errors.

I was supposed to sell the XB12R and that would cover a big chunk of the cost of the 1125, but now I am worried about being left without transportation... AGAIN

I am so very tempted to just say F**K IT, and sell both and get something else...

But I do not want to leave Buell or Badweb...
Buell has noble intentions and they take care of their customers.
and Badweb is an incredible place full of some of the most interesting and helpful people.
Not to mention I do not want to cut off my fantastic relationship with Glendale, a great thanks to Andrew and Eric.

But then were would I go?

There are four choices:
Ducati
-1098
-898
KTM
-SuperDuke
-RC8

If there is any other sporty V-2 out there let me know...
Or maybe a BMW...

I understand your frustration Interex and sorry to hear. My 06 Ulysses had a disproportionate share of troubles some repeat, so I figured my 08 Firebolt would be a quick fix. Clutch cable went up in smoke, headlamp short and defective mirror within the first 100 miles. aaaarrrggghhhhhhh

I think you got a lemon and need to have buell do a trade, from those pictures something is wrong, I do not know how a intake port would have carbon in it and you say lack of power and I went from a ulysses and my 1125R has more power down low than the ulysses, atleast it feels like it does, I know how you feel the ulysses I bought in june oil pump went, then I got jurked around by the dealership I bought it from, so after that I wanted a new bike and bought the 1125R and except for a voltage problem the bike is awesome, I did lean a lesson and that is to have a spare bike and bought my son a blast to learn on and going to keep it as a spare bike, it is a piece of **** but I dont care about it which is nice and is cheap to run, I do not own a car so I was with out transpertation, and the blast I bought was real cheap but needed work and now I ride it when I need to go shopping because I got cheap saddlebags on it. I think you should contact buell and tell them something is wrong and fax those pictures to them, a picture speaks a thousand words and thoses say allot. there is a company putting the vrod engine in a sport bike frame but is expensive. Well, I opened mine up.
Not as far as Interex, but got a look at my valves for the first time, half of them anyway.
Filter doesn't look bad, a little grey in the corners.
Stack to valve is chunk-free, light oily carbon film after butterflies.
Rock-catchers in the tray work, got the vacuum after the gravel.
Everything's duckie.

JEEEEZ that's a big throat, errr pair.
First time I've seen them.
Other side of the coin - the valves are tiny

Anyway... no scare here.

I just wouldn't ever place my money on a new Buell until they quit trying to bring innovative engineering and quirky designs to market by doing so down to a 'budget' price.

It's this simple from where I see things. Innovative and quirky belong with prestige, not budget. Ducati don't do budget. Neither do BMW. And KTM follow suit right across their range.

Anyway, I'm outta here for two days. Will be happy to fight the good fight when I return.

Ideas don't cost money, innovation doesn't have a price tag. There's no magic in the Eye-Ties or Zee Germans, it's practice. Buell has made massive strides, I hope this is an isolated case.

The first sign that something's wrong is saying no power in the same breath as 1125R.
Mine will out-accelerate a Viper. It's almost scary quick/fast.
Makes every bike I've ever ridden feel like mini-bikes.

How many miles you got?

Another question - how do you get the bottom tray of the airbox - the part stuck to the injector stacks - off?
I took out the 2 screws at the top and it wiggles, but I can't get it to come off...

I wonder how much of the carbon deposits are a result of aspirating oil due to the overfill issue?

I just had the initial service done and the tech commented on some carbon deposits. I discussed the overfill issue I had. He confirmed the oil was filled before it left the factory. He remembered my bike because it was the first on to the dealership. He said he was the one who un-crated and did the initial setup on my bike. During setup, he checked the oil on the sidestand (prior to the service bulletin) which is why he didn't catch the overfill.

I remember when a lot here were b!tching about the delay in delivery. I, among others, said there must be a reason. I believe this may be one of the reasons. Now people are b!tching about it not being correct. Should have been more patient. Although, at this point, you have every right to be mad.

zac,
unhook the wire loom on the left rear of the box, it lays in a groove in the tray. also the rubber between the throttle bodies and the airbox hold it in place. couple of tries will get it back on. put the rubber seal on the airbox plastic then slide over throttle bodies, then lace the wire loom, then the 2 screws and you are ready for the filter. oh yeah, put some paper towels in the throttle body intakes before you start.

I'll give it a go, I'd like a look at the throttle linkage.

FYI
A close friend of mine bought a SuperDuke last spring. He loves it. Like the new 1125R, it has very little "flywheel" weighting and is soft below 3K. But the riding position is like a a sport tourer.

Actually I botched the mileage... I am actually just a hair under 1900mi.

I do not believe that the deposits are from over filling, although its possible...
When I opened her up, it was bone dry in there as can be seen in the first picture.
I also made a point to tell the service guys about the oil level update.

We shall see what happens with regards to a another bike...
Yesterday I was searching around and saw a bike which I have lusting over for a while:
Moto Guzzi V11 Cafe Sport...
I did not consider a Tuono... we shall see.

But at this point I am hoping these issues will be resolved, and I am eager to feel the proper "scary fast" 1125R that everyone is talking about.

I am sure this is a isolated issue... so I doubt that any of you should worry too much.
