The clutch engages far out. I’ve adjusted the lever to 5 to reduce the distance from the grip and that helps some.


That may be a feature. In his Smooth Riding book, Reg Pridmore recommends not pulling the clutch all the way back to the bar in order to make shifting smoother. That trick only works of course if the clutch engages fairly far out.

I have a friend thats a die hard V-rod fan and i made the mistake of letting him ride my bike. He was gone for an hour. Was the longest hour of my life. After he got back all he said was WOW! and i asked what he liked about it and all he said was WOW!. After he came down from his buell riding high he said this is going to be his next bike. He said he has never in his life had so much fun riding a bike. This is also the first buell he has ridden. I think i converted him. Yaa for me.

Crap! Gotta go to work today.
Snowed yesterday, the roads are slick and it's 5˚ outside, so I guess I'm not riding anyway.

Monday, I adjusted the suspension to Buell's recommendations for my weight and the cold.
Softened everything, especially rebound, MUCH BETTER.
I got thru the 400s and parked her in the garage with 500 showing.
Rest of this week looks pretty harsh.

On another note, my neighbor was over yesterday.
His wife works at a Kawi shop that caters to squids mostly and he said "That's the most beautiful bike I've ever seen" .
He didn't even mention the PODS.
He also told me he saw me leaving for work last Thursday.
Said, as I got onto the highway, I got sideways, straightened and took off like nothing happened.
I recall the tire spinning and the ass flipped out a bit when I accelerated on ice/gravel, but everything felt good and under control.
I didn't think twice about it, until he commented.

I rode home from Danbury HD/Buell this afternoon. Quiet and smooth, but Buell through and through! It doesn't want to stand up under braking in the turns like my Lightning. The seat is as hard as a board. Ergos seem to fit my 6'4" 200# frame. More to come...

Man, you guys are killin’ me on this thread. I’m in no position to deal with a bout of the “Wants,” but it’s happening. Thanks a lot.!

Reading about y’all’s experiences with this new machine also causes me to think about two or three years back when so many on this board were screaming for a water-cooled Buell, couldn’t they fit a V-Rod engine into one, and when was Buell going to come out of the dark ages?

What I’ve been wondering about is, while all that was going on, how difficult it must have been for the folks at Buell to keep their mouths shut, especially when they were getting close, and knew they had such a winner on their hands.

(Don’t ever hire me for anything, Erik… no way I could keep a secret like that!)

Thanks for that Zac. That has been one of my big fears, going from an XB9 to the 1125. I do that on the XB9 with no worries, but the thought of doing that with so much more power has given me pause. Very happy to hear it isn't unnerving. I'll be finding out Monday

passed 1000 miles on the way home from work yesterday and all is going well. very nice package. still haven't topped it out, but hit 135 indicated a couple of times. i'm going to have to remove the tank bag to get tucked in. still have a big grin.

Managed to sneak out for a short ride in "nice" weather.
I got another 68 miles before the snow started coming back.
I've GOT to get a front fender that's longer in the rear.

I don't believe the Iron Butt is about the bike. If a guy on a Sportster can place very well, second I believe, I don't think the 1125R is going to be anything special on that run. The people are whats special for the Iron Butt.

I don't believe the Iron Butt is about the bike.

I'd believe that. A friend, to make that point, did the Iron Butt on his girlfriends old Zundap 167cc 2-stroke.

He simply mailed spare cylinders, pistons and rods to points along the route and changed them 7 or 8 times during the event.

He got 2nd in his first Iron Butt attempt . . and did reasonably well with the Zundap.

Ooops. . . that was not clear. I checked and Martin got THIRD, not second on his first attempt at the Iron Butt. It started as a joke among those of us on the CompuServe RIDE Motorcycle Fourm.

1995 Iron Butt Finishers (54 riders started the rally):

Then a couple years later . . . Martin, funny fellow that he is, brought his girlfriends Zundapp and took a crack. I thought it was cool that he finished 41st, ahead of a couple dozen other bikes.

Although the bike says 175cc, it was actually 167cc and was the smallest to ever finish at that time. Subsequently the rules were changed and in 2003 minimum displacement rules were implemented for safety reasons.


Smallest* motorcycle to finish an Iron Butt Rally:

2001 Kieth Keating Suzuki GN125 (no repairs - stock!)
2001 Paul Meredith Cagiva 125 (one engine swap)
2001 Bob Ray Honda Reflex Scooter (250cc)
1997 Martin Hildebrandt Zundapp KS175 (Martin is from Germany)
1995 Ed Otto Honda Helix (250cc single cylinder scooter)

1993 Doug Packard Kawasaki KLR650



In 1997, Martin Hildebrandt rode a 1973 Zundapp to become the first
person to finish on a two stroke.

In 2001 Martin rode again didn't place due to swapping motorcycles along with another old CompuServe regular Leonard Aaron who rode a 1946 Indian Chief and still holds the distinction of having ridden the oldest bike, (I **think** and am too lazy to look).

Those were fun times and wonderful people.

The story of the day I took Martin to the Buell factory is still one of the funniest that captures the essence of Erik Buell.

I wasn't actually thinking about the rally. You can get some sort of Iron Butt certificate for just riding 1000 miles in 24 hours and keeping a record of it.

No, it's not about the bike as much as the rider. But my thinking was that no one that I am aware of, has, as of yet, done a 1000 mile day on an 1125. That honor is there for the taking.

After I posted this morning, I thought about it for a little while, and called the HD dealership to see if they would rent me their demo 1125. I could spend new years day riding to Memphis and back to have lunch with Ft_bstrd. That would be an easy 1000 miles and I could swing through Deals Gap on the way out. Alas the dealership would actually like to use their demo bike to do demos with, so someone else is gonna have to be the first to do it.
