Could someone tell me if there is a section in the knowledge vault about how to lift one of these bikes with a bike lift? I know I am leaving myself wide open here for jokes. Can you just lift it from the underside of the trans?

Kim, I knew it had DLC and radial brakes, but I couldn't figure out what they meant by 'raidal'. Looked like any other brake to me, until someone explained it.

That black shit is so slick the bug guts don't stick to it. Smoother than chrome.

Snail, I'm wishing my entire bike and riding gear was covered in that "black shit".:) Went by a highway painting operation yesterday and everything is covered in yellow specks. My bike is yellow so I didn't notice it until I tried cleaning the bugs off today. Not quite sure how to get it off without damaging the surfaces.

1. Load bike drive to Utah.
2. Smash existing record.
3. Load bike return home.
4. Bask in Glory.

Hello all:
A non-Buell but bike related question:

A friend has a Honda Hurricane that he just had new tires installed. At about 45 mph, the forks shake, to the point he is afraid to let go. The tires are Maxxis Supermax, the front is a 110-70ZR17. He has returned to the shop and re-balanced the front with no difference in shake. What to do next? There was no shake with old tires on.

Well, I am new here to Badweather but I have been to the salt twice with the XL-List Race Team and loved it. Wanted to get back last fall but the rain screwed that up and I couldn't make it to the final meet where Dale, Timbo and Aaron set the new PP1000 world record using the Mystery Evo. I definitly want to be back on the salt this fall, I believe the xl-list team will mount an effort, and I can help out with both teams.

Tbolt,
Check the easy stuff and the obvious stuff first:
1. Are the tires mounted in the rotationally correct direction?
2. Are the bolts properly tightened and the wheels aligned?
3. Is the brake rotor warped? Did the wheel get warped in the tire change?
4. Is the tire pressure correct?
5. How are his steering head bearings, snug and good and lubed?
6. Does the bike have spoked wheels? If so are the spokes tensioned correctly?

Is anyone going to attempt a 1350 P/PP effort?

This is a record prime for a fast tube framer, right now it is held by a Moto Guzzi, Team Cooked Goose set in 2001 at 151.588. This record must be brought back into the fold. We have talked on our sportster about it, I believe that an S1/S2 (maybe an X1?) might be the best choice for this.

A few questions for the collective:
How common/ uncommon is it to shear the key on the pinion gear?
What would be the indications that this has happened?
What would the liklyhood of any valves being bent?
How difficult is it to replace this key on the pinion shaft?
What other damage might occur if this scenario took place?
BTW: my ignition issue was due to a toasted sensor assy (This also may have contributed to the above issue with the pinion gear).

The upside is I now have spark on Passion and Stripe'r still runs great.

Tbolt, Examine the interface between tire and wheel and check if the circumfirencial "rib" right next to the wheel is equadistant from the wheel all the way around on both sides. If it is, then I'm gonna bet that they bent the rim.

Tbolt, is it a 'shake' or a 'bounce'? Each indicates something very different. Sometimes, I have found with that type of bike, the owner is usually fond of wheelying and there may be a bit too much play (and wear) in the steering head bearings. The old tire would not give him such a drastic indication of the problem, being worn out and all. New rubber would bring this to light ASAP.
Out of round would be a bounce and I have seen that on more than one occasion.

I can't even imagine what tool a shop would have to use to warp/bend a stock rim....a forklift, maybe?

Pammy, Neil,

Could it be just starting to shear? (sheer?) I've seen a couple of keys in other applications that were smooged over a bit just about ready to shear off, but the metal-smear kept them somewhat intact with the gear rotated off a few degrees. A major bear to get off too when they do that. Took a bigasshammer and a hot torch and no desire to need the parts afterwards just because the boss wanted to see what the problem really was.

Why, specifically, are you asking this question? Are you hearing funny noises in the engine or is it running slightly out of time? Or is this just a gut feel that something is amiss down in the oil pump department due to issues a few others have had in the last few months with their pinion gears?

It happens.(especially if no locktite was used)}}

It depends. It could be dramatic(and noisy) or simply wouldn't start.

Very!Could also crack/break piston, bend rod, etc...

How difficult is it to replace this key on the pinion shaft?
Not very, compared to the other repairs needed.

What other damage might occur if this scenario took place?
Up a couple of questions...cases need to be split, worse case scenerio.

Thanks to all. The S2 stopped running yesterday AM on my way to work running about 3500rpm. I had it flatbeded home and started looking into it after work.

I found the ignition sensor assy. overheated, it's potting toast and no spark. I replaced the ignition sensor assy. and now have great spark but very little air pumping out the spark plug holes.
When cranking the starter it sounds much different than normal (can't verbalize the sound) and there is not the "whumpf, whumpf" out the exhaust that you normally hear when cranking without sparkplugs.
This Sunday I'll pull the header and see if the valves are opening. If they aren't opening, I guess my next step is to pull the cam cover. Should I pull the rocker box's prior to pulling the cam cover?
If I find the pinion gear key sheared I'll replace it and put the cam cover back on. Next run a compression check to see if I have any bent valves. If my compression is pretty equal and up in a good range (Aaron can you give me an idea of what number to expect with Hurricane pistons, Stage 1 Thunderstorm heads and N4 cams?) then maybe I'll be able to tell if I cheated the mechanical reaper
.
Guess I'll need: Rocker box gasket sets, cam cover gasket, exhaust donuts, pinion gear key, and what else (good Karma)?

If you pull the RB cover, you won't even need a gasket as the rubber one should be fine for another go round.
It's easier than pulling the header also.

If you shine a flashlight in the sparklug hole you should be able to see the valves open and close. without having to do any dissassembly.

You should also be able to tell if there's any obvious piston damage by peeking into the plug holes. What did the spark plugs look like when you removed them?

Can you drop the oil pump without removing the cam cover? I think so but today I'm not so certain (bad brain day, not enough hair to be a bad hair day). Start with the easy stuff to check and work your way in. And just for grins and a wildass guess, is your primary chain still intact and spinning the tranny when the engine turns over? H-D/XL engines sound weird when the primary chain is removed if my memory is still functioning.

You can remove the cam cover without removing the rockerboxes, but it will put your cam bushings in serious peril. I wouldn't do it.

So when you take the rockers off and pull the pushrods out, out of curiosity, which one is normally the intake? one red stripe or 3? not that I knocked the box over and now am not sure which is which or anything

The intakes (inside ones) are shorter pushrods than the exhausts (outside ones).

Neil,what Pammy said. Loctite red is essential. Don't tell anyone, but I overtorque the nut a little too ;)

My S2 has Stage 1 heads with N4's and 10:1 and it makes 87rwhp. YMMV.
