Ray,
It's as close to a raw aluminum color as you can get with powder coat. It looks very metallic, with a nice shine. I'm having the swingarm done to match. I'm still waffleing on the body work Deep black, silver or pearl white.

The strange question of the day: Will gun blue work on titanium? If not, what can you use to darken Ti that's durable?

FMJ: a combination of holiday spirit, visiting with friends over the holidays, packages arriving in the mail with gestures of friendship and kindness. Got me in one of those crystal clear, "warm and fuzzy" moments, when you realize what it's all about.

Good cheers my friend.

Ara . . . I don't think gun blue will work on Ti (it doesn't on Aluminum, which leads me to think it might be a reaction with the iron somehow?)

Ti CAN be colored, however, through anodizing and through the application of heat , , , , , custom knifmakers are getting some gorgeous colors through heat application, some of which look alot like gun bluing . . . . .

Finishing link. Don't know if it will answer any questions though, but it does talk about coloring titanium.

Bomber, the active ingredients in gun blue are some kind of mild acid and copper. The acid etches the metal and the blue color comes from the copper. I don't think it's dependent on the metal being ferris, more likely it has something to do with the valences of the outer shells of the metal atoms. But I'm not sure.
Mikej, the notion of applying an electrical charge is really interesting. I wonder if that will help make gun blue or some other coloring agent work.
Thanks, guys!

Actually, modern blueing salts are "based" (get it?) on nitrates not acids.

Titainium can be colored by running voltage (9.4 to 12.7 volts) through the part while in a detergent electrolyte. Different voltage will give a different color. It is fairly tough but wont stand up to rough use. No heat. You can heat color steel, but again, it's not tough, has a tendency to change color over time and definatly may influence the hardness of the part. For instance, a nice heat blue knife isn't good for more than cutting cheese.

Josh,
There's an autographed on on eBay right now. I have the Hot Rod Bikes issue that has the real bike on the cover (The only Buell to grace the cover ever). It's got a nice write up on what Avon did to the bike.

You can, however, turn Ferris blue...by storing the Viffer for the winter. The color won't last though. Come spring, when a revived S2 is unleashed, he will return to...normal(?)

Ralph . . . .some folks don't need knives to cut . . . . .oh, never mind

some years ago, I saw a bobbed HD in Sante Fe . . . imagine a shovelhead version of HD's Duece, and it was similar . . . .clean, low, black, and most of what whould have been chromed (fender struts, air cleaner cover, derby cover and like that) had been colored to look like gun bluing . . . ..

my right brain salivated at it, thinking how nice it looked, while my left brain went, "yikes, that sould last about 4 or 5 days!"

don't know if it was blued or not, never found the owner, but it sure was pretty

For those of you planning to visit Court in NYC (You know who you are, Charlotte!) I have a couple of pieces of advice:

1) DO NOT let Court talk you into "grabbing dinner at a little neighborhood dump" he knows!

2) Free your mind from any archaic notions you may have about conventional vehicular behavior in traffic. If U-turns using both sidewalks bother you, close your eyes. If you believe there's such a thing as a "one-way street", get over it. If you are concerned about the unauthorized use of flashing lights and sirens on a civilian vehicle, take a taxi.

3) Track shoes are a good idea.

Court: Thanks again for the Accelerated NYC Tour! I'll have pictures for you later.

I was eating Mexican food at a German restaurant in Thailand a few years ago, and on the street outside, all the traffic was moving in one direction. A few minutes later, some brave soul in a TukTuk drove the wrong way down the sidewalk. More followed. Then cars. Soon the flow of traffic had reversed itself and the whole process began again, but from the other side of the street.

Any differences between a "paved street" and a "paved sidewalk" are strictly a result of socialization.....they both serve MY purposes equally well.

Besides....given my arrongant confidence, I still maintain that the other 312 vehicles were going the wrong way.

>>>>>unauthorized use of flashing lights and sirens on a civilian vehicle

This bothers me a bit, as it is a "half truth".

They are NOT "flashing lights". . . but they are Whelan aircraft wingtip strobes simply adapted to help "enhance visibility".

The "siren"? Well, I'll plead "kinda guilty". In my defense, let me emphatically state that the Motorola Syntor XX 9000 "Road Blocker" (NOTE: The exponential horns are ONLY driven by 100w amps) was installed not for my benefit but for those, like cabbies and natives, in NYC who foolishly come in the path of a Ford pickup from Kansas.....yeah...that's it!

I am an innocent victim!
