I'll chime in here and say EZ has the good word. Pirelli sticks sooner but wears faster. Avon lasts longer. I've been going with Avon because there aren't a lot of curves around here. I still seem to be scraping the pegs more and more every day, though.

Thanks guys... Sounds like the Pirellis would be my best choice out of those, plus they are ridiculously cheap to boot!

Other options I have, because the Ninja can fit a little bigger tires without a problem, are Bridgestone Spitfires and BT45s, Avon Super Venoms, and Pirelli Sport Demons. These are more expensive sport-bias tires typically fitted to bigger (and higher performance) bikes, they are available in 130/90R16 and 100/90R16....

If you guys could fit those, would you pick 'em over the MT75's?

Thanks again,
Rob

You'd be going a bit large - 10 over is about as far as you want to go dimension wise - after that they get squirlley from the wheel being to small for the tire. The 140/70 works because in the end its dimensions are only 10 over, been there trying that - no fun in the corners! Looks good though - lol

Lots of people run those sizes on their Ninjettes. Word is they help stability and lower engine RPM by like 3% from the stock 130/80 rear (Ninja 250s run like 8-9K at highway speeds!) with the downside being slightly slower steering. Still, all the racers run the bigger tires, Dunlop 501s are the racing preference with a 110/90 front, which requires a fender mod.

As it relates to me though, I am trying to decide if the bigger/more expensive tires are overkill for a bike of the Ninja's weight and power output or can they be put to good use on the street, and whether or not the potentially better grip and longer life is worth giving up the really quick steering of the smaller Pirellis.

It's 2.50x16... front is 2.15x16. Supposedly the rear is actually meant for a 120 width tire, but for whatever reason, when they redesigned the bike for 1988 they used a 130, probably for marketing reasons than anything. The original Ninja 250 used the same size rim and a now-discontinued Dunlop K530 in 120/80R16. No doubt thanks to the existence of the Blast, there are now a few decent rear tires in 120/80 available, but people have been using the larger sizes for a long time now since that was pretty much what was available.

I am leaning toward the MT75s for quickness of steering as well as cost at this point.

Your bikes must be harder on rear tires than Ninjas - people report getting 5-6000 out of a rear MT75.

More torque down low eats tires - a Blast is pretty quick on take offs - suprises a lot of folks. We'd have to cut off the guard tab for the shock for that to fit and more mods for even larger...nature of the beast..lol

Thanks for your insight Rob.We only get to try a select few tires (what we can get to fit),but I guess the 250 has been a good testing ground for potential Blast tires.
Too bad about the K630.They look good but apparently not worth it to modify the swingarm for (never liked Dunlops anyway).

My theory: The engine puts a whole Blast! of power on one spot of the tire, pauses a bit, then puts another Blast! of power on another spot, wearing out the tire faster than an engine that puts the power strokes closer together with more pistons.

What EZ said. More power down low, where it is most frequently used puts more power to the rear tire more often than on a bike that has to be revved to get any useful power.

Prag does that price include the tires ? If the answer is yes, then it is a good deal. If the price of the tires is not in the deal then that is not a good price. My local shop will charge me 40 dollars if I bring in the rims loose with the tires. My 2 cents, Have a great day

This knowledge is second hand so far, but the votes are starting to roll in and the funny news is we may have a new performance tire for the Blast - of all Brands - the Chen Shin Baracuda V rated 130/80 & 100/90 set has now been found by several Blastards to be a very good performance tire - very sticky is the common response - I still have some miles to go on my tires on both bikes, but I was wondering if anybody else has tried them as well. People agree they aren't a pretty tire, but if they work better than the rest, looks become very secondary, now the long term begins - Look out Blastards! There is a new Tire in town and it hails all the way from China! LOL - Truly we are the step children of step children! Ahh well - as the saying goes - whatever works!

Ok, bad news about the Kenda K671. I just installed a brand new rear that i had been waiting for for 2 weeks. (Backorder) They changed the dimensions!! The sidewall height is only 30mm now, it used to be about 43mm. I have the old tire as well as the new. (I installed them myself)
Gonna try the Barracuda next...

OK, Mark, How exactly is that bad news?
Does it change how the tread sits or?
Everything I can figure is good news.Less weight, less sidewall flex,?

PS I guess your doing okay after the battle with the minivan?

Weellllll, because it looks skinnier than the front tire now. It measures at 120mm. Check this out; I e-mailed them yesterday after lunch, and when I got home and checked my email, there was already a reply, as follows:

Hi Mark; My name is Frank Stacy and I work for Kenda tires in there technical / design dept.
Your concern really surprised me as I am not aware of any changes to the K671 140/70-16.

What I would like you to do is check the sidewall markings on the new K671 140/70-16 compared to your worn K671 140/70-16. Look at all the lettering on each side of the sidewall and see if everything matches.

In the mean time I will send an email to our Taiwan technical headquarters to see if they have any idea what happen.

If you have a phone number and would like to talk live, please send it to me and I will call you.
Thanks Frank.

I have just purchased my third Kenda K671 S/T tire for use on a Buell
Blast. The first two looked great, a 140 up from a 120. However, this
latest K671 has a different sidewall height?!? 30mm vs. 43mm on my
previous ones. Is this an intended change? And/or why? Unless your
pulling a 90 degree angle on your turn, there's no way of using all that
tread...

Anyway, my reason of purchase, and likely most others purchases, is to
obtain a wider tire than stock that will fit a Buell Blast. Can you
please go back to your original design, or was this a mistake? I still
have my last take-off, and can show you the difference.

I would certainly like a reply.

Pretty swift, huh? You see the tread is now way more on the sidewall now. Too rounded. It was great before, you could just barely get to the edge, but now, you'd pretty much have to lay the bike down, and still not get close. It's ridiculous. The whole sidewall is tread now.

Check my earlier pics of my first tire. It looked normal. Oh well, if this doesn't pan out, I'm going to go with the Barracuda.
-Mark

P.S.: The minvan wreck paid me $2980 total. The Buell cost me $2000 originally. : ) Feeling fine now.

So, they totaled out your Blast? Do you now have a salvage title? How did that go?

I was supposed to leave out on Monday to Copper Harbor in the Keewena in the UP of Michigan. I've been there on snowmobile and car(Usually for work) I have been promised an Kenda tire by 2 day air for last Friday and of course....it never got to the store! It is now supposed to be on the wheel Monday at 9:30 am. This was to go on to the red Blast for a friend to borrow. The Big Kid is riding the yellow Blast and I am taking the Sportster.

Anyways, the service guy at the store started trying to talk me into a "Premium Set" of Brigstone bias belted tires! Anybody ever heard of this. The guy swears by them and says alot of the older tire sized bikes are running them on the track by us.

I am too nerved up to try something different right now, all I can think about is Brockway Mtn. and the return trip along the west coast of the Keweenaw.

My back tire is almost smooth in the center so I think I need a new one. : ) I read all the posts here and I can't seem to get a good suggestion on what tires to get. Anyone have a tried and true solution? I've been looking around at Tires Unlimited:
http://www.tiresunlimited.com/motorcycle_tires.htm
and Tires n Stuff:
http://www.tiresnstuff.com/chen-c6000.html

I really think I should get them this week. The back tire looks worse every time I look at it. Do you need to replace them both at the same time? Thanks guys!

Avon or Pirrelli - some folks replace as a set to get optimum usage of the tires, others replace individually. The new hot ticket, and larger size is the ChenShin V rated Baracuda - 130/80 with the 100/90. Lasts a bit longer than the Pirrelli, very sticky, and a bit wider - down side - ugly tread design - lol

A few weeks back I posted a question on another board asking about the ChenShin V rated Baracuda. I have not edited the replies, some of the folks who did reply do race motorcycles. This is just being posted for information purposes. I have not used the tires so I can not rate the tire.

we sell the cuddas to the street goones who dont want to spend money on a decent tire. i'd rather have a kenda on my bike then a cheng chin ( which is chinease for cheap sh*t i believe) but would't even run around town in dry conditions on a moped w/ those mounted up.
unless you want to learn how to flat track i'd spend the extra money on a decent tire. by the way, what are you wanting to put this tire on??????

Ah, you guys are wimps. A Cheng Shin would work fine. Just soak it in gasoline for a day or so, then light it someplace conspicuous on a Friday night. The fire department will have a hell of a time putting it out.
An old fire guy told me it was a prank they used to play on the new fire guys.... knock their egos down a notch or two.
If you burn your eyebrows trying this, don't be calling me!

My bike is a Buell Blast, I have a very limited tire selection I can use. I have spoke with a few other folks, who have not done track days, and they tell me the tires are great. I use Pirelli's MT75's now, they work great for me and have held up very well at Jennings. I was just looking for various opinions to see if other people have used this brand. I can see from the replies that tire would not be the best selection to use. Thanks for all the input

Hey I never heard good about Chen Shin either, however, companies are known to either improve or die, they are still here and as been said elsewhere on this board - they are at least upgrading their product consistantly, their new sport tire is considered pretty good, and I hear the newer versions of their other stuff has improved as well - several Blast owners have been quite impressed with them.
There on my list to try next.

Thanks EZ! Always there with the knowledge. I have more questions though. : ) I read about going up in size, especially on the back tire, but I'm not sure what to do. I went to the Avon site and they have several tires around 130/80-16. What are the limits to tire size on the blast? For example, can I go up to a 140/90-16? 130/70-16? Avon also has a stock-size replacement guide. I could always just get stock-sized tires. Thoughts? I need help. ; )

It's V-rated, so it should be somewhat sticky. As far as sliding around goes, it can't possibly be worse than the stockers. Well, I guess it could be worse, but you'd probably have to hook up a hose and nozzle to keep spraying a fine mist of oil on it... Man, I can't wait to get my Pirellis on. lol...
