Hubby bought me my 2001 Blast, the Bumblebee, in April of 2012. She had 2500 miles, and had sat for most of her life. We have replaced the exhaust with a V&H pipe and had her rejetted. The Das Boot, and auto enricher have both been replaced, and she has a new iridium spark plug. She was still having problems. I read more BadWeB and discovered 2+ quarts of water in the gas tank, cleaned out the carb, the float looks great, replaced the gasket and ordered another Venturi ring (the old one got over torqued and cracked.) Every line is clear, but she's still having problems. My Bumblebee is still back firing and seems to be starving. She made it to work yesterday (about 4 miles at 65mph) but kept dying and barely made it home. After reading BadWeB I suspect the Ignition Module. My problem now is what part number do I order? Stock Y0459.11A7 / 32687-00YA ? An upgrade? I'm having a hard time figuring out what will work with her and what won't. Any suggestions? | ||

Y0459.11A7 An upgrade isnt available unless you wish to do additional work besides just a stock swap out replacement. Does the bike restart? Pull the timing (points) cover off. Check the LED. If the bike wont start and the LED is flashing, its probably not the module. BUT it has too flashing regularly. A bad module can have an erratic flash (or none at all-obvious). Did the bike run the same after you took the carb apart? Fuel starvation (seemingly) is a classic sign of a bad module. Its also a sign of a bad fuel tank vent. Pull the gas cap off and see if the problem goes away (warning:yes this can be dangerous. Dont do it with a full tank and use common sense.) If you pulled out all your hair, its probably the module. There are common symptoms, but they can be erratic and very uncommon too. It will drive you nuts. 2000 and 2001's were the worst years for modules. Your Blast isnt from California is it? How did you know I've been pulling my hair out? Yes, she will kind of sort of restart. Hub was able to coax her home, but it took a lot of restarting. She was running when we got her, but thanks to the water in the gas tank I've never been able to use the reserve tank. I rode 50 miles or so (until I ran out of gas) right after the I had the carb, plug, das boot, pipes etc done. That's when I discovered the water problem and emptied 2 quarts of water out of the fuel tank. The Bumblebee then went about 15 miles before dying the next time, and I thought it was residual water in the carb so Hubby took cleaned all of that out. He removed the carb, cleaned it, removed the tank and dried it out, checked all the fuel lines and tank vent valve. He replaced the gasket under the venturi ring and rode it to my work to surprise me, about 4 miles. I cruised thru town, and commented that she was starting to backfire and act funny. We made it about 1 mile and ended up coaxing her home. That's when we started thinking ignition module. Now Hub is pretty sure the cam oil seal is shot too. Like I said, the Bumblebee sat with water and gas for at least 2 years. My poor sick bike. Thank you so much for your time and advice. We appreciate it. | ||

Yes, it does sound like a module, but I certainly cant be sure. If it wouldnt start and the LED on the module wasnt flashing, thats a clear sign of a bad module. Especially if its starts flashing again and the bike starts. They are hard to pinpoint as bad until they fail completely. Many dont. Pull the ignition module cover off until you find the problem, that way you can check quickly for LED flashing (spark). Unless it rains, it will be fine. |
