So I was stopped at an intersection today and when I started to roll the throttle, i heard a loud pop and the engine cut off. Smoke started coming out of the carb box. The engine turns over when I try to start it but it won't fire up. I got the bike a month ago and the guy i got it from didn't ride it much, so i think maybe when i used the reserve tank last week (which i'm assuming he never used) it may have clogged the fuel line? honestly i know next to nothing about engines so that's just a gut instinct. Anyone have any ideas?

You checked the spark plug? Make sure the spark plug wire is on tight or that the plug didn't pop out or come loose. Just sayin cuz it happened to me once or twice.

Ok so I found it, looks like it's still in one piece but it looks disconnected. Is there any way to get it off without removing the carb or am I just going to have to remove the whole thing?

So I just replaced it with another boot I got from my local harley shop and it started right up. First mechanical thing i've ever worked on and it only took about an hour. I have to say I'm pretty proud of myself right now lol. thanks for the help, time to take it for a test ride.

the white crap is water boiling out of the oil. (normal) turn the elbow inside the airbox downward to drip the crap away from the intake.

when was ether oil changed last?

I actually had a feeling the oil needed to be changed, so i changed the oil right after I posted that and it started running normal after that. I got the bike a month ago so I wasn't sure when the last change was.

With an air cooled engine, the water boils out significantly faster than it will in a car or water-cooled bike. On those, the oil sits around 250-300* and steams out the PCV system (which is another reason it's good to have a manifold PCV system on a car!)

On an air-cooled bike, the oil gets much hotter, and the water tends to boil out of the oil a lot faster. The plus side of having the stock intake/PCV system is that as that steam hits the combustion chamber, it's giving it a good cleaning! However, it can also lead to detonation and other problems.

I agree with EZ - spin the plastic "T" fitting 180* to point it away from the intake. Just make sure you pop your intake cover off every month (or so) and clean off the film that's going to accumulate on the floor of the airbox, or it'll start dripping and make a mess in your garage!

While you're in there, you can totally cut off the Bugle/Horn from the airbox, and trim the opening out to 2 3/8" (EZ Airbox Mod). I've found that you don't need a dremel to do this - you can just use a box cutter/utility knife. With a little patience (and being careful!) you can avoid melty plastic bits and have it done just as nicely!
