I think that around town riding isn't heating the ignition module enough to cause it to cut out whereas, extended riding is. The 5-10 minute wait is allowing the ignition module to cool sufficiently to allow the bike to run again. I'm with EZ on this. It's the ignition module. (Sorry)

Ignition Module.....

But once you replace it, you will say to yourself "That was money well spent".....and....."Boy, this bike runs great! I should have done this long ago"

Got bumped at a stoplight today! Sitting there, wishing I wasn't almost to work, and wham! The bike lurched forward maybe a foot. I thought my clutch cable broke or something for a second before I turned around and saw some dipshit in his neon going "I'm so sorry." I cursed him loudly and waved a one-fingered salute before the light turned green and I blasted off. That'll sure wake you up. Good mornin!

Thanks Guys, is there any write ups on here for replacing the ignition module??? never had to do that b4. I was beginning to think my bike had p.m.s. & hated me. I was pondering where to put the Midol and dark chocolate. On the up side I don't have to go to the gym in the morning, after pushing the bike for 2 hrs out in the middle of nowhere, i think I got my work out in.

It is a real straight forward operation to change it out. The connector terminal comes apart and you remove the 4 pins to feed the wire through the hole in the timing cover. Static timing is done by having the LED light on the module just shutting off at TDC, the ignition module then times itself from TDC. The slot is TDC the two marks are the timing marks. The ignition module adjusts the advance from TDC, so if you set the module to come on with the timing marks in the window(static timing) it will be wrong while it is running. Once you get it back together, and dynamic time it, you will find that the timing is spot on.

I think I just gave this instruction less than a month ago and I think Gearheaderiko corrected me on wether the the TDC was the slot or the two dots.....

Mark exactly where your old ignition is with a scribe, mount new in exactly the same place, then proceed with plug, then check and adjust pretty much as described above. here it is:
The timing mark you're looking for is the 2 dots and it IS hard to see. Idle should be at 1200rpm or you wont see it. If you rev the engine a little, you might spot them going back and forth through the window. If your using a "dial back" timing light (esp. one with advance and retard) that will also help you see the dots. Painting them black or white can also help (depending on if your flywheel is dirty brown or shiny new grey).

Other issues: If the timing cup came loose it can make the timing marks very difficult to see and will cause the timing to fluctuate and the carb to give the occasional pop. You'll have to take the module out to check (if you hadnt already done so). (just out, not disconnected and the rotor should turn easily if loose).
The 2000 Blasts were jetted lean. The factory even upped the main jet in the later years. You Blast may just be too lean giving it the occasional pop. Install a 170 main (now stock) and a 45 slow jet and that will certainly improve running, whether it solves your problem or not.
You might have the notorious cracked intake boot.

Other less common issues could be faulty tps, bad spark plug, bad plug wire, loose connection, spark plug tip loose or off, bad fuel, or......

Latest news from Mac!

Dear EZ(edited)

We're a little behind (a cunning but chivalrous reference to The Glamorous
Assistant's posterior) but we're making progress. Here's a sense of how it's
going;

Those clever folk at Caerbont Automotive Instruments over the border in
Wales are busy making a unique speedo' for the 'Spud' prototype. We've made
them scratch their heads a bit asking for something which is a bit tricky
but which is what we really want and fits with the integrity of Mac's
design.

Mr Parker's buried deep in his workshop at the seaside (Bournemouth is on
the south coast and although it is full of tourists, old people and snooker
players, it is officially the 'happiest place to live in the UK') Simon's
been burning the midnight oil making the prototype tank and we'll put some
photos up on the blog shortly to give you a sense of how it's shaping-up
(pardon the pun).

Things are spinning along nicely in north London too at E.T. Martin, with
the prototype headlamps due shortly for fitting and testing. We're trying a
couple of different shapes and sizes which you'll see on the blog soon and
can, as always, please tell us what you think.

We're fairly sure now that we can produce kits as well as complete Mac
motorbikes. It makes sense for us to sell kits to America and Canada which
can be 'reunited' with plentiful Buell Blast motors, and there are distinct
savings to be made for our fans 'across the pond'. We will be looking for
bona fide distributors and builders in the US and Canada who share our
philosophy, want to become 'Mac-approved' and who would like to offer our
kits for customers to either assemble themselves or offer an assembly
service for those who want a complete bike built to their own specification.
For our fans elsewhere around the world, we'll be able to build complete
bikes here in England and ship them to you directly or send complete kits
for final assembly by a Mac-approved workshop in your own country. Prices
will reflect your assembly choice, preferred final specification and
shipping cost, all of which will be clear when we start talking to you about
your order.

We opened our news by declaring that we're a little behind but we should
explain more why that's the case. We hope you've got the sense from our
updates and blog that we're trying as hard as we can to get things made here
in England but it's hard-going at times. British manufacturing has lost a
lot of ground in our lifetime and finding the skills we need and a 'can-do'
attitude has been tricky. Some can do what we want but don't really want to,
some have just lost the skills and some are close to
'hanging-up-their-boots' (an old English expression for when a sportsman
decided to retire) and only work if they feel like it. We've done a lot of
miles tracking these businesses down to help us and now think we have a good
crew around us.

We'd really like to thank you here for your patience and continued support,
it doesn't go unnoticed. Please don't stop telling us what you think, we're
always open to hear your thoughts and suggestions, we read them all and many
of your comments have sharpened our thinking. Please bear with us; we're
itching to ride the 'Spud' as much as you are...

More soon, we promise.

With our best wishes

This is beautiful work. Thanks for the pics EZ. It's great seeing the process in progress. I checked out the website & can't decide which one I like most. I noticed one curious thing, a photo on the motor page that shows the same pushrod cover conversion I have on my Blast that seems to be missing from all the mock-ups (as well as any other Blast I've seen on any of these boards). I'm surprised it's not more common as it adds a distinct chrome-against-flat black contrast to the look.
Keep us posted!

I dig the the Pegasus logo too. I wish it were more available on aftermarket parts. Did NOT realize my foot was headed straight to my mouth about chrome though. Guess I'll consider myself officially ostracized from the Blast community at this point : (

Chrome requires cleaning or it looks bad.

Motorcycles require riding or why own one?

I'd rather be riding than polishing : ) Any day good enough to wash a motorcycle is a day good enough to ride. And, for that matter, many days not good enough to wash a motorcycle are good enough to ride. Raingear for the win!

I don't object to chrome, I'd just rather not have it, because it'll get dirty and look bad.

... that Mac bike looks stunning, but I'm not convinced it would be comfortable to ride any distance.

Never happen - only if you make a second Chrome Blast - then it could happen - lol

The pictures of the pink and chrome Blast are in the photo archives, the funny part about that bike is the guy who did the plating said he went through two wheel buffing machines to get the Blast wheels finish smooth enough to plate - lol

searched badweb for "pink blast chrome" and got 3 results, one of which was this thread. ugh. sounds ugly anyway so probably not missing anything. sounds like he had some real devotion to getting those rims plated though. i plan on powder coating mine white but will be happy with letting the shop simply sand blast them.

Yeah - he said he'd never do it again! Just someone being different, no biggey, but way to shiny for me - they did the frame, lower forks, trees, swing-arm, then Pepto-Bismal Pink painted body work, Corbin low seat, all well done - got a second place in a local show - Minnesota, Michigan - one of them Northern states - lol - where not many Blasts out when it was done.

Yes our archives are deep and ponderous! - lol

Thanx EZ & swampy and others for excellent advice getting it lined out. Finally going to be taking some longer trips on my days off. planning on tearing up some back roads through mark twain national forest.

My gf's Blast is leaking a bit of oil from where the clutch cable screws into the primary cover. Is this a "Just tighten it up" fix, or a "Dismantle half the engine" fix?

It depends......

Is it leaking from the threads? Or is it leaking from the cable housing?

There is an O-ring between the cable and the clutch cover, if the cable is loose in the clutch cover you could just try tightening it....but do not over tighten it as you can break the threaded end of the cable off in the clutch cover.

If that seems fairly tight, then take off the vent hose to the primary and blow it out - critters aka bugs live and die in those things clogging the hose - lol

So after doing a lot of pondering, being without 2 wheels for 6 months, considering gas costs and school coming up (back to College after 8 years of piddlin' : D), I decided that I REALLY want a Blast. Plus they're cheap and cheap to mod. I plan on getting one in a month or two and first thing is to start building a chopped tail lol. I really like the tail on the Yellow cafe style bike with the red wheels.
