Ok I have a 2001 Blast and I have had the carb rebuilt, the rubber boot behind the carb replaced, and the coil replaced. Now the problem is that after about 20 minutes of riding the bike will start to act up spitting and backfiring and will eventually die and will not start again for about 20 minutes or so. I have checked the roll over valve and it flows freely and the hose is not pinched. I have checked the battery and it is good and with the bike running it is charging at 14.1-14.5 volts. I have heard that is might be the ignition module and was wondering if anyone could give me a detailed explanion on how to check it because I cannot find a repair manual that is not electronic. Next is my gas mileage went to hell I was getting around 65mpg but am now getting 50 or less and I heard that this could be a problem with the primary and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to do this because I do not think the previous owner serviced this bike at all so I am sure the primary has not been messed with.

Welcome to the Badweb Loganwolf!

What you want to do is check for spark after the bike dies and won't restart. If you are not getting spark, check for the LED to light on the ignition module(under the black plastic cover on the right side of the engine) as you crank the bike, if it is not blinking as you crank it(with the ignition switch on and the kill switch on) you probably have a bad ignition module. It looks like the 2001 Blast had a pattern failure with the ignition module. Replacing it will cure your problems.

Thank you swampy I will try that tomorrow hopefully it will act up. Now if anyone has any idea on the bad gas mileage that would be helpful. I live in south ga so it is not a problem with different gas. And does anyone know where I can get an ignition module I was looking online and the only one I found was almost $200.

You can pick one up from Buell Parts for around $125

If your careful - this can be plug and go, mark exactly where your old ignition is replacing other in exact same position, TDC good to go. (A very brief version with skipped steps -) lol

Ok thanks for the help ez and swampy. The problem I am having now is when I called my local harley dealer they said the part was $180. Now swampy said to pick it up from buell parts and it was around $125. I was just wondering if the price went up or are they ripping me off.

Oh and I did find a service manual and it should be in soon so I think it will tell me how to adjust the primary cause after reading that most get the blast up to 95 and mine barely goes over 80 I think I need to adjust it.

Sounds like the primary is too tight - try 11 to 12 flats out instead of the book recommended - which is way too tight.

Ok my bike just died on me a little bit ago and I pulled the cover off and the light didn't blink so I guess the means the module. Well I hope you guys get back to me on where I can get one for a good price. If I have to spend $180 I guess I will just have to spend $180 I just hope not cause I have already spent $300 to fix it and it didn't fix it. Last time I let anyone work on my bike I will fix it myself from now on.

Ok Ez I will when I get the book which should be in a few days. If that fixes the 80mph thing that will be great only other problem I have is the head gasket is leaking at the front but I can see that was a problem with the first years since they used a two piece seal. How hard is it to replace the head gasket?

The rocker-cover gasket is the leaker - time consuming, but not hard. Helpful hints in this section -

Oh ok well it looked like the head but I just went and looked and the rocker cover is leaking. I guess if it was the head it would be leaking oil all the time. I guess it was just pooling up at the bottom of the head making me think that was it but I can see that the freshest oil is at the top, but I have seen it when my bike was hot and shut off for air bubbles to be coming up through the oil that was sitting at the bottom of the head that is why I thought it was leaking.

Is it possible to fix the rocker cover gasket leak with just high temp silicone? I know when I am working on my trucks and cars I just use it instead of a gasket cause it usually lasts longer and provides a better seal.
