okay, i'm back. Thanks again for all your input guys.

So far after changing out the carb, i'm getting a LOT more power out of it, but still starts to bog down when the rpm gets too high or speeds hit about 62-65mph.

Been looking around and found a link from one of Ed's old posts from another forum about modifying this carb.

I did pretty much everything mentioned in the link, except changing the needle to a different one (which was optional) and drilling out the vacuum port of the diaphragm to 1/8"

It also says that if the bike is bogging down at high speeds, it's too rich at the main jet and should go back down a size. If I did that I'd be back at stock (165).

Any pointers before I go at it with the bike later?

Oh yeah, tried changing the tranny fluid. one screw was seized and had to cut through the clutch cover. no damage, only just the cover. Going to put a new one on soon, after learning the one I had was an old part and need to replace it with a more updated one.

Rob

I think I may take you up on that offer sometime Ed, even if it means just kicking back with a few drinks.

Sorry for the late reply. I had a busy week but was able to fix the problem.

First changed the transmission fluid. I wasn't sure if dealer changed it last I had it in their shop...I doubt it, well, unless they decided to change it with chocolate milk. Yeah, it looked that bad.

One of the posts Ed made on the carb included being very gentle on screwing down the top portion of the carb (with the diaphragm). So I switched back to my old carb, swapped the jets back over, was extremely gentle in screwing it down, popped it back on the bike, started her up, gave her a ride down the highway (had to be somewhere) and...I've never felt it pull that hard since I've owned it...

I noticed it missing a bit of oil now, but remembered our engine does tend to eat oil a bit at a time. I bet it does for me even more after putting in that new piston and boring out the cylinder. But yes, it works perfectly now. I ride it to work every day with a forecast of good weather. Impresses the kids at work too. I work with high school kids and inspired one enough for him to go and get his permit and now rides a Sportster.
