so im just wondering if anyone else has had one "go missing" and more importantly, was it ripped off or simply just fell off? because either way that pisses me off...  can i get one thats more secure than that plastic crap-flap? | ||

Yes it happens. From one of my earlier posts: "timing cover part # 32341-00YA about $3. However any 2 hole points/timing cover for a 1970-1999 Harley Big Twin or 1971-2007 XL (Sportster) will fit, cover should include 2 screws with it. Use a gasket for a rainproof seal, but its not mandatory. $10-$20. Any cover with a design will be at a slight angle (XL) or 90 degrees turned (Big Twin). Any shop/catalogue carrying HD parts should have these in stock." | ||

so they just fall off? because i was checking the one out on a friends his didnt seem to come off very easily | ||

it is just snapped into place. so any object that hits the cover and have it pop off/ break. | ||

I lost mine on Belt Blvd in Richmond ,Va on the way to work.Replaced with chrome dome cover $20.00 at Departure Bike Works.I guess they have a habit of falling off. | ||

They all dont fall off, but some do. My guess is its worsened by improper removal with a screwdriver/knife rather than the drill the hole method in the manual. I've never had my original cover fall off and its been removed many times (drilled hole in cover per manual). This includes many times around the racetrack at 6500-7500rpms. I did recently take it off because it would be a dam shame to get 'black flagged' and lose a lap just because a small plastic cover fell off (they are supposed to be safety wired, siliconed or JB welded, etc. on). The 2 hole cover is much more likely (in my experience) to fall off from vibrations than the stock plastic cover. The screws come loose if not loctited. They should not be overtightened though. Red loctite (small dab) on the module hold down screws and blue on the cover screws. A good reason to use a gasket is that there is less of a chance for everything to seize up and a much better chance of pulling everything apart if it does. FWIW: If you ever lose the module hold down screw buy an original HD/Buell part. An aftermarket replacement screw may not be of very good quality and may break very easily. You'll then be stuck trying to drill out a very small broken bolt. Its a bad situation (but you can always go back to the plastic cover). | ||
