I just acquired a 2001 blast and haven't been able to get it running well yet. The previous owner thought the problem was a clogged jet, and would be solved by cleaning the carb, so I cleaned the carb and changed the oil straightaway, but the problem persists. Here it is:

When you start the bike up, it dies in a minute or so at idle. You can get another forty seconds or so out of it by giving slight throttle, but it always eventually sputters out no matter how much throttle is given.

Once it's been run out this way, it has trouble starting again and dies very quickly. It takes about forty minutes of being off before it will run as long again.

During the minute or so when it does run, it has power and can be put in gear. The same thing happens to the engine when it's in gear and moving.

Any thoughts you have would be much appreciated. I'm fairly new to working with engines, so I could be missing something obvious. I'm sure it's not the head gasket, though.

First two thoughts - Das Boot and ignition, though there is a world of other things to check before the ignition is replaced.

I'm working on Gus22's bike with him, and we haven't been able to get her running yet. I'm pretty sure the idling death isn't caused by the boot, which is almost new and in good shape. But the situation has gotten worse since we were trying to solve that problem. I replaced the spark plug and now the engine wont start at all. When I push the start button, all that happens is clicking. It did seem to happen right after the spark plug was changed... Any advice would be much appreciated

Sounds like you have a low battery or a poor battery connection. Check that first, charge up the battery, then try it again. Also the boot may look good but the carb may have popped off during a backfire while cranking it.

Have you checked to see if there is a spark present with the new spark plug?
