I got my carb reassembled, installed the new boot, then the carb. Last step before putting in the airbox - connecting the throttle cables into the throttle wheel. When I removed the carb yesterday, I did not remove the bracket above the carb holding the cables - they both released easy enough without it. Now that I am trying to reinstall them, I cannot get enough slack to install both barrels in. I adjusted both grip adjusters all the way out - which shortened the cables - and all the way in - which seemed to lengthen them the most. When I was unsuccessful with the installation, I checked the service manual and realized the cable clamp might need to be removed - at least it said to do so for disassembly - but the tiny allen head screw was stripped when I looked at it, so removing the clamp would be a real PITA if it is required. Can anyone tell me how to get a little more slack in the throttle cables? Just a mm or 2 would do it. Thanks! Hil (Message edited by HLD01blast on April 07, 2009) |

Um, how does one explain it.... If it came off, it can go back on, it takes alot of patience. Make sure the cable housing is all the way seated in bot the handle bar side and carb side, sometimes when the cable sleeve slips out of the bracket that holds the sleeve it will take up the slack making it impossible to reinstall the cable ends in the wheel until the sleeve is placed properly in the seat. |

Hilarye, try this... Open up the throttle housing on the grip and disconnect your cables from the throttle cam. Pay close attention to how the cabling is routed in the throttle. There's nothing difficult but if you don't pay attention as you disassemble it might take longer to reassemble it. This should give you an extra 1.5"-2" of slack. Now go and reconnect your cables at the carb. Be sure the cable casing is firmly seated and that everything is in it's place. Once your cables are good at the carb, take your time and reconnect the cables at the throttle cam and carefully reassemble the throttle housing on the grip. There really isn't anything difficult in the grip throttle. Just make sure the cables are properly seated in the elbow grooves when you reassemble them. Like Swampy said, if it came off it can go back on. Let us know how it goes for you. |

Thanks all. I appreciate the suggestions. The cables came off very easily, but when I tried to use the needle nose pliers to install, it only went one of the cable. I will let you all know what happens this evening. |

Just make sure the cable casing is fully seated in the bracket sleeve. It sounds like it might not be. |

I will check that before doing any more disassembly. Thanks Johnny! |

I presume this "oak tree method" is a joke of some sort - since I am a noob, can you let me in on what exactly it refers too? Thx. (Message edited by hld01blast on April 08, 2009) |

Whew. Got the throttle cables back in the bracket, the left foot peg assembly installed and the old grips removed. The V&H exhaust should be here tomorrow and I plan to start cutting on the airbox tomorrow evening too. New mirrors arrived today. With any luck, I should be Blasting around town by the weekend. Thanks for everyone's continued assistance. |

Find oak tree - preferably near home - strip naked, paint yourself all over with old motor oil, grab a torque wrench in one hand and the manual in the other and dance around the tree three times. Guarantees the fix every time! People here swear by it! EZ |

Of course if you can talk your wife or loved one to do it for you while you take pictures - all the better! EZ |

LOL too funny. I will remember that the next time I get stuck - which with my luck will likely be today LOL. |

So Hil, what did you have to do to fix the cables? I'm curious as to the cause of the problem. Great day to install a new V&H header (at least around here). I'm jealous! My header pipe cracked off of the muffler on my ride home from work yesterday. Today's the nicest day to ride all week and me without a bike. Have to take it to the local muffler shop a couple blocks from home tomorrow morning and see if they will weld it back on for me. Two steps forward, one step back! |

I ended up taking the cables loose at the grip end. Not exactly sure what the problem was or how I "fixed" it, but everything went back together correctly and I am thrilled. Sorry to hear about your header. It is the nicest day of the week here too - supposed to rain tomorrow. Anyway, hopefully the local shop can get you back on the rode soon. Thanks for the assist. |

Glad you got it working. I took the bike to the Meineke I've gone to for years and they welded it back up for me this afternoon for $20. Good as new and a Blast to ride! |

They built my exhaust for me. Bought a Cherry Bomb, took it to Meineke, and they hooked me up. |

Reuel, how much did they charge you to make the header and mounts? |
