What is the formula for determining the right diameter exhaust pipe? What am I going to be able to use when I stroke my 600 to 720? --Nik

Thanks to all of you,

The support I have received from the BadWeb and especially from the Thumper section, has helped me realize a dream. And that dream was to go to the Salt Flats. It was a long process especially after the rain out of 2002 and many times I wondered if it was truly worth it. The words of encouragement from you all and my sponsors helped in pushing it to completion and the suggestions provided by those of you helped in making it a very successful effort. The experience is much different than any other type of racing that I have been involved in. Although the USFRA and their officials made it a very enjoyable one. I must say that the first run scared me to death, not because I doubted my abilities, but because I feared doing something stupid that would have embarrassed not only me but everyone involved. After that first run it was nothing but fun, stressful but major fun.

This is the final confirmation:
Trophies

Again a major THANK YOU to all for the encouragement and support and a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

Ray

If any of you are wondering, yes I am going to go back. It may be in two years though (recoup some finances). We are already planing some new things and classes to try out there. The major project presently is to convert over to chain drive for the obvious reason of more gear choices. The plan is to do this but maintain the stock 16" wheels. We currently have plans drawn up for a sprocket conversion to do this and plan to work it up this next spring.

In order - lol
Nic - You need a header with a 1 3/4id = Force, WhiteBrothers (see my mods for max), Bub, Wileyco (hard to obtain but if you have an Aussie connection you should be ok) - Also I hear D&D was revamping their blast pipe for a bigger header - call them for confirm - if you'd like to go with different bolt on cans you could get a Kerker(cheap)cut their can off at or before the crossover (the crossover is 1 5/8" and actually restricts the motor) - thus having a nicely tuned header and bolt on your choice of after market cans from the 3" Supertrapp universal to any of the hundred bolt on mufflers add a universal
muffler mounting strap and your done.

Ray - too cool! I'd luv to see that conversion keeping the 16" wheels - I'd hate to give up that extra nimbleness for 17" also. Totally rad! - keep us informed! And thank you for sharing with us your salt adventures!

Ralph - knowing your budget I feel for ya, however, by that same token it must be great to have a bunch of Racer friends for contacts to have gotten so far as you have in your project! Totally sweet! Your one lucky dog in that respect;0) - lol - yeah that Ebay head would have been the bomb - still you don't have that far to go to complete her - too cool!

Gee looks like I get to ride home in the Rain - wet fun! - life's tough eh?! - lol

Ok, quick question: I just got a torque cone for the blast off Ebay. I've already searched the database, but it didn't seem to have any concrete answers. I understand that it will increase low end torque, but i've also been told that they work best in drag pipes. Whats the real scoop? I'm running a stock blast, with a V&H pipe (which is almost a drag pipe in itself) I can't install it till after the new year (goin out of town), and do not have access to a dyno. What can I expect? Will I need to adjust the jets? any advice?

Don't use it with the V&H pipe, You'll just hurt your power even more.

So your opinion is that the V&H does not provide a significant increase in performance? Under what conditions would a torque cone help?

Yes, i'm undereducated when it comes to performace mods. I do TRY to understand though :)

What are the decibel levels these other pipes put out. I have a V&H and barely meet the 104-db level imposed by tracks in the area. If I get any louder I will get booted off the track.

The WB exhaust comes with a torque cone, however best results are without it. When they did a dyno test of torque cones vs. none for comparison (in the regular KV section - dyno section) you gained just a tad in the middle but lost almost the same amount on top - so on a Blast this would not be a good thing because she can't afford to loose any. Funny thing - I've been running a series of tests with a torque cone and a gutted stock exhaust - there is more mid response and probably a few extra ponies, on the WB though it felt like I was loosing power - still not done with my mad scientist efforts - will report when I'm done - lol

Ray--The trophies look great. Congrats, again. I can hardly wait to hear about the chain conversion and see the trophies from your next trip to the salt.
Everyone--Hope you're all having a great holiday. I know I am. lol...

Can anyone tell me what is the outside diameter of the cylinder sleeve on a 3 13/16 bore cylinder? My cylinder hasn't got here yet, and I am getting my case bored today and I realized I don't know what I need to have it bored to. Thanks! --Nik

Hi Guys, I'm new to the thumper forums...but not to the rest of this site.

I just bought my G/F..soon to be wife, a Blast for X-mas. I own an S1 lightning.

Anyway, I finaly took it for a short spin today, and have some questions.

This bike BTW is a 2001. It is all stock, and has 1200 miles on it.

It seems to have a bad misfire. If I just rev it up slowly in nuetral, it will spit and pop threw the exhaust. It also was pinging when i first started it up.

There are a lot of un-knowns when buying a used bike. I have no idea how old the gas is in the tank...so i will replace the gas with fresh gas. I also have no idea how long the bike sat. (maybe gummed up carb)

I still need to pick up a service manual for this bike.

Maybe timing is off too?

Check/replace spark plug?

Any other things i should look for. I keep hearing talk about the intake boot, so I will check/replace that. Is there a newer/better one avail?

Engine also seems real NOISY, compared to my big buell.

Should I try changing the jets? (i know the 2002 up has differnt size that 2001)

Any and all help you guys/gals could give me would be great.

Thanks
JayB

JayB --

I'm by no means an expert, but those here will probably tell you to rejet the carb.

Also, since it was pinging, I'd bet that it has 87 octane gas in it. The manual says to use 87, but the swingarm says to use 91. All I know is that once I switched, the pinging went away. (and people on message boards stopped yelling at me for using 87 octane. <grin> )

First-as you said-I'd start with thinking bad gas.(dont know how long it sat).Since it has only one cylinder it can be real touchy with bad gas.
I dont think re-jet is the answer unless it doesnt have the stock exhaust.
The pinging when first started-Do you mean at idle and just revving it up (no load)? (That would be really bad-probably timing).
The engine does seem real noisy(and thats compared to my shovelhead!) but if its pinging and backfiring I'm sure it has to be worse than normal.
I always go with the idea that if it ran new stock out of the showroom, it should still run in stock condition.(ie: dont start changing jets or exhausts or other parts for non-stock items hoping to fix a problem).
Good luck & keep us posted!

Thanks guys for the help.

I will change out the gas tonight.

It was pinging when I first started it up. I was slowly reving it when it was pinging.

Like I said I still need to get a service manual.

But to verify timing, is there really a LED there?
(I read the how to adjust timing thread)

If there is an LED, that seems like an easy thing to verify.

I too believe that if it ran from the factory in stock condition, this one should. It just seemed like most say to rejet the carb. If I have the carb off to clean it, might as well rejet too.

Thanks again guys.

Jay - some 2000 late and early 2001 did have slight problems with timing - a service bulletin was issued - only a few bikes were affected by this - only a degree or so off - I would check that or have it checked.
Jetting would probably alleaviate the problem however, for the most part.
Welcome and enjoy the ride!

Thanks EZ,

Do you know where one might find this service bulletin? I remember the sport twin site had some, but they are no longer there.

Does anyone know what the timing fix was? Just an adjustment, or new parts?

Thanks again

JayB,

It was a adjustment in both the timing and the throttle position sensor on the carb. No replacement parts were required. I'll see if I can find the bulletin when I get home tonight.
