The problem is to get one to read right - the only analog ones that work are Duccatti single units that cost an outragous amount, or you end up doing a lot of electrical modifying - caveman has been working on doubling the pulse single to fool the units into thinking its a twin signal - but he's been on nite shift for a while and droped off the face of regular earth - will drop by and inquire in person - I'm not satisfied with the digital ones I have - they have quirky problems with the time it takes to process info - if the lag were consistent I wouldn't care but its not - lol - thank God they are cheap! I'm still looking myself for a reasonable solution. The Duc units are around 350.00 plus - ugghh!

Hey - I was told that the toe peg for the shifter is not in the 00 through 02 parts catalog, but is found in the 03/04 catalogs #N05459.BA, are there other corrections? For instance what value do they give for how many flats out to adjust primary? What value do they give for oil pressure? And what opperating temperature are they using? The older sets of manuals were incorrect on these values and now I'm curious - the new manual now has been corrected and I was wondering how far those updates went? Must be a few new Blasters out there with the New 03/04 Manuals/service and parts who can let me know;0)
Always curious and willing to write correct stuff beside collumn in old book - do not wish to buy a new one! - lol

Buellistic, for info on the AutoMeter tach installed on my Buell, contact the expert (as usual) Aaron Wilson of Nallin Bros. He installed the one on mine and it works great. It is not a simple plug-in, but not a problem for a man with your mechanical prowess.

motorcycle... Even though some have to use a MASTER MECHANIC(not a techinican!!!) to do it...

Hi guys. I've got a thumper too...just a German one. I took my MSF class this year on a Blast! and thought it was a good bike. Saw quite a few of them dropped....and then picked right back up and ridden again. Tough little bikes. I enjoy some of the modified Blasts that you guys have done. Especially you guys that have put clip-ons and cafe fairings for that MADMAX look. The Blast! is a great looking bike anyway. Here's a pic of my thumper for you guys to admire.

Very nice! If I owned one of those - I'd be hacking off bits though to streamline( - whats the seat height of those?), clip ons, and just general replacing or deleting of heavy for light - Hows the handling? Just curious - BMW's have always been outside the box in their thoughts on suspension - which is a good thing! - its just that it makes it harder to compare how well the suspension is actually working - lol.
Great motor/trans. set up - been reading its history - if its a thumper - lol;0)
Lot of potential in that motor for even more power - have fun!

Is that the new street only R650GS? Or is it a 'grey market' bike?

The 650 CS uses the same engine as the GS. It's belt drive just like the Buell's. We also store fluid in the frame just like the Firebolt the difference being the frame is the oil resovoir. Fuell is stored under the seat.

Engine is a 650cc Rotax liquid cooled thumper. Brakes are ABS. Everything in the pics is stock from the factory except for some trim pieces on the can that I painted in the top photo. The CS is supposed to be BMW's city commuter. The bike is good in city situations but is really great in the same types of roads that Buell has in their advertisements...twisties. An experienced rider on an F650CS thumper can pretty much mop the floor with a rice-rocket on a twistie back road.
The CS was actually meant to be BMW's Blast! but it's horsepower (48 at the wheel), torque (47), and personality make it more like an 883 Sportster. Sweetest spot on the powerband is between 4000 and 5500. Keep her RPM's up there and she's a screamer.

Everyone in my area either owns a cruiser or a rice rocket so when I park the bike at a restaurant there are sometimes people asking questions.
"So BMW find caught up to Harley and started using belts," was one I heard.
One of the greatest compliments I ever heard about my bike came from a Harley owner. He thought my bike was a Buell untill he came closer and looked. He then said "That looks like a real 'hellraiser' bike. I've got an 883 plain black Hugger that I use for 'hellraising' 'round town and this bike looks like a hellraiser." I couldn't have described her better myself.
And so my bike then had a nickname. I decided to call it Hellraiser.

EZBlast- It's going to be some time before anyone is able to hop up one of these. Everything is controlled by BMW's computer and no one has broken the FI codes yet. The older pre-2001 models have carbs though.

As for myself, I realize that some BMW owners kind of look down their noses at the Harley and rice-rocket crowd. I for one do not subscribe to that kind of behavior. Motorcycles to me are like a wines. They are each a little different and it's the differences that make them great. I happen to like the Buell products because they are doing amazing things with a very old engine design by surrounding the engine with modern technology.

My wife decided she loved motorcycles but didn't want to be a passenger (that control thing that wives get..go figure). I nearly bought her a Blast! but ran across a cool little Yamaha called a Vision. Made in 1982, shaft drive, 550cc v-twin. Man if these were made these days they'd fly off the floor faster than you can say SV650!

Seat height is about 30 in.
Bike weighs about 420 wet.
Suspension is great (good thing since it's forks aren't adjustable) I've got a 90 degree right-hander on my country commute that's all washboard from semis right at the apex and I can take the curve at 50 and the front wheel keeps firmly planted on the washboard stuff.

As for steering. I Mentioned that I took the MSF class on a Blast! so I have 16 hours on one. In my opinion the swerving is easier on my Beemer by far but the low speed (like the box portion of the MSF) is easier on the Blast! by virtue of the fact that the CS is taller and a little more tippy. If you sit my CS next to a Firebolt or Lightning it actually looks like a GoldWing in proportion being at least 6 inches higher and 8 to 10 inches longer. Just 'cause it's a thumper doesn't mean it's small.

Sounds like a very nice ride! Theres a lot of power to be had from the Rotax - even in BMW guise! How does the rear stick on tight turns? Yeah they are big puppies and if you go to rearsets and aftermarket exhausts on a Blast your BMW is almost a 100 lbs heaver! - lol - Surely someone makes aftermarket FI soft/hardware for that puppy! This is Amurica - darn it ! - Home of the hotrodder!

As far a "stiction" goes the bike came with Michelin Pilot Sports. Very sticky tires but I was only able to get about 3300 miles out of the rears (Wife sayz "Those tires cost how much?!?!";) so fearing marital retribution I went to Avon Azarro AV46's as a sport-touring tire (little harder compound means better mileage) about 800 miles ago. No discernible wear and they grip in the wet just fine. The do handle a little different than the Michelins. It takes a little more effort to do an "obstacle swerve" but the Azarros are a little more stable leaned over.

As far as exhausts go I think going to an aftermarket one would actually save weight. The stock can has a 3 pass catalytic which makes it quite heavy.

Pennypincher, If you're going to insult my bikes and expect me to rise to the bait here's how I respond.
Since you do not list owning any specific models of bikes in your profile I can assume you are a troll.
Valve shims usually never have to be touched again after break-in. Yep the F650 does sound like a sewing machine when idling. Watching the people's jaws drop open when you wax their butts on a twistie road makes it worth it. Remus and a couple of others make exhausts. Yep it's got a cat. You can do lots of wrenching yourself save for the ABS and FI systems. Valve adjustment isn't as hard as it looks. Hardest part is taking all the damnde bodywork off.

As for the Vision, mine did have some carb problems when I first got it but those were vacuum related. Repairing a cracked YICS resovoir and replacing the vacuum lines got her running great. Special thanks to the Riders of Vision website for some great troubleshooting charts.

Who's pennypincher? (I don't see anything - must have pulled their post) - if you put a different can on it don't you have to reset your FI somehow so it will supply a correct amount of fuel and not leave you lean? Can you do this yourself or does the dealership have to do it? I'm pro FI - if set up properly can be more reliable than a carb and compensate better for changing conditions such as altitude, etc. - lol -

Hi, I'm going to start stripping my blast tonight for a 3 13/16" big bore install. I want to eventually stroke the crank to achieve 720cc, but I don't have enough money for that yet. What will my effects be if I leave the head and most of the valve train stock? Also, how would the Screaming Eagle cams for blast work with this? What else past case boring will I need to modify? By itself, with just the cam mentioned, running that V&H - not much more than 40hp - if you at least get stage 1 head work (what I have) so that you can breath better and stronger, and then are capable of higher rpms - assuming a Screaming Eagle ignition, as well as taking advantage of then also being prepared for a more powerfull cam as well - the XB set (see 515cc big bore install section, and run with those specs in the TKV - Thumper Knowledge Vault) comes to mind;0) - The pro series Screaming Eagle/B-50 cam is nice and really opens up the mid range - I do enjoy it, however, the XB would give you more top end and more of everything else to boot, while still being streetable with set up practically identical except for a modification of the timing cup on the XB set(described in the sugested reading above) - you may still have to go with adjustable pushrod tubes (easy install)because of clearance issues with the larger jug;0), also a sugestion to go with another exhaust - the V&H will constrict - a tuned WB or a Bub, Force, D&D, or the unobtainable Wileyco, or even the pro series would be better (the V&H sure looks pretty though - lol) - if you go with my sugestion 50+ hp to close to 60, and if you went with stage 3 heads (alone with the above would put you in the 65+hp) and N-7 cam set up -you'd probalby pull in 70 + hp, however these cams are work intesive - needing adj. push rods, clearence checks, etc.- Hope this helps'0) -

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to go with the Screaming Eagle/B-50 cam and no or little headwork for now, money is pretty tight, I had to drop 7K for tools for this voc. tech. m/c service class I'm taking. But definintly 600cc. I think I'm gonna get the pushrod tubes, cylinder, piston, gaskets, pushrods from Zippers and get the cams at my local hd, since I can get -15%. 70+ HP? Hell yeah! All in time! Final destination: 720, 4-valve head, F.I., rearsets, custom seat, works shocks, six-speed... Take on a stock XB any day! --Nik

Its funny, but even as modified as they are, people still recognize them as Buell Blasts and start asking questions - have yet to hear from anyone face to face a foul word about the bikes - lol - even in the pouring rain - made me smile;0) - ahhh - different in every sense!

One thing to remember the XB has a better tire contact patch than the Blast. That is the #1 thing to remember. It's one thing that I forget from time to time and it has put my ass on the ground a few times. I'm still running the stock engine, which is fine. I'm pushing the bike past it's handling limits just to keep up with the XB and tubers in our group, thats not good. That's why my 600 is collecting dust right now.

This is embarrassing... I spent two hours last night trying to remove the three bolts from the right foot peg bracket that hold it to the frame and I only succeeded in removing one. I was so frustrated things started flying, so I decided it was time to call it a night. I have tried every possible combination (that I can see) of universal joints, universal socket, extensions, wobble extensions, offset wrench, and I'm just about ready to try out my new hacksaw on that stupid bracket! I have taken off the left one to get at my clutch a few times, but that was never so difficult for some reason. How did any of you take these bolts off? I'm thinking I will just buy a pair of rear-sets right now so I will not have to put the stock ones back on. Since Zippers is saying there will be 3-4 weeks before they have my cylinder in stock, I'll have the time to make the extra money (for the rear-sets) without any more downtime. Does anyone have any recommendations for rear-sets (where style and price are major factors)? Also, how do they feel with a stock handlebar? Thanks --Nik

By the way, the reason I stopped riding and decided to do my engine upgrade was because it wouldn't start one morning. I realized it was because my head gasket (between the head and the cylinder) was leaking really badly so there was not enough compression to start it. This problem was most likely caused by my riding it for the four miles that I did after my upper front motor-mount/isolator broke. It must have been hanging there from the upper mount, so it was putting too much stress on the head gasket. Gosh, sorry about this long post!

Well, theres always swingarm modification to fit bigger tires/belts, fork upgrades/bracing, and probably more, but I definitely see your point!

With the forks there are a few things you can do and it's not going to be cheap if done right.

First thing to do is find a pair of XB9SL forks. Make sure they are for the LOW model. Then give Banke a call and have him machine you a new triple tree. If you want to use XB wheels you'll need to figure some way to mount the rear. If you want to use the old style wheels you need to get the lower fork legs from an X1 ( I may not be right on this ).

Two swivals, 4 cigarettes, a lot of cussing (this with battery removed), and 1 beer later I got it - lol - and putting it back on is even harder - Bankes can be from stock height to 2" higher and 8" back - least expensive and quality set - I've seen some nice home made jobs, some of the dirt track reverse set ups looked slick even if they were homemade;0) - a cheaper semi homemade version uses s - 1 Banke type set with a hanging bracket as the Crossroads set does - lol - Sounds like you got your work cut out for ya and winter to do it in - well timed karmically - lol - ;0)

Thanks, I never tried it with two swivals. (uni joints?) The cussing, however has not done me any good so far. But I will try the double uni idea as soon as I get home! (I'm at work now) Will I have to take that main bundle of wires (that is in the way of those nuts) out to remove the motor? That would probably make my life easier! Yes - I do have my work cut out for me, and it's gonna be well worth the time, money and effort involved even if I end up with a motorcycle that is inferior and over-costly compared to an XB because it will be still be unquestionably different in every sense! Anyone could just go out and buy an $8K jap bike and have a super-performing bike, but thats not nearly as attractive to me as such a personalized bike as what I plan to end up with. (Even though it will probably end up costing me more than $8K and not perform as well) As far as I'm concerned, it's more the experience of almost re-engineering my own bike that makes it so much cooler.
