If the brake is dragging, it isn't the caliper. It is the cylinder in the handle that is not releasing brake pressure.

I've tried the Dunlop, Pirelli, and the Avon, and I like Avon best. Seems to be a little happier to lean my Blast! over. It's supposed to be better for rain handling too, but I haven't tried that aspect out yet.

It's going to be 31 degrees tomorrow. I haven't ridden my Blast! since last week. I still haven't decided if I'm riding tomorrow morning to work...

Ride to work!Watch for black ice under bridges! If you're planning on riding two or more days in a row, when you get home cover the engine with a heavy blanket,it will help keep some of the engine heat in, making the next morning start up a little easier.(of course dont let the blanket touch any hot motor parts, just think of it as building a little cocoon for the engine!). Enjoy!

Gearhead, I'm just curious what didn't like about the kenda front? I've liked mine just as well as the Dunlop I'm wondering if I missed something? And I thought it looked nicer to boot.

Now with 4"+ of snow on the roads and morning temps below 0 degrees F, I won't be riding anytime soon so I won't be able to test anything out, but I'm still curious.

thx

Okay, if the dragging brake problem is in the cylinder, is there an adjustment I can make to back the pads off a little bit? I did a quick check on the bike, but I can't find anything that looks like an adjustment on the handle end. On the caliper end, I noticed a screw and something that looks like a grease fitting with a rubber cap.

Dave-Are the brakes actually dragging or just rubbing on the rotor?(are they actually slowing the wheel down). If the brakes were dragging you would definitely smell them heating up.
Stuart-At low speeds when turning the front wheel it seems to be a little more unstable. Its almost as if the front neck bearings are bad, as soon as you begin turning, it acts like it goes a little more than you wanted it too.Hard to explain.Maybe its just that I have two new tires which hasn't happened since the bike was new.Dont know about harder cornering yet, as the Blast becomes much more stable in turns.Anyway, its only at slower speeds that its noticable,so it just might be a moot point.

I believe the way to fix the brake dragging problem, if the cylinder is the problem, is to rebuild the cylinder. I tried changing my brake fluid, as it was looking dark. That helped, but still on cold days I avoid the front brake as they still bind. That can be dangerous to use just the rear brake. Otherwise, I would have ridden this morning...

Gearhead - I think I know what you are talking about, I do think I felt more 'turn in' if that's the right word, almost like it wanted to fall into the turn a bit more at low speed. I didn't think much of it at the the time though... hmmm... now if the damn snow would just melt I could get out and play with it a bit.

EZ- There's about 5 months of the year that I _really_ miss the bay area. I hope your enjoying the benefits of living there!

Gearhead: the brakes were dragging worse after I started playing around with them. Be even before I messed with the brakes, whenever I spun the front wheel, it stopped before it made a complete revolution.

I can hear them rubbing, if that means anything significant.

Updated the links section - lol - as usual - if you can't find it there...

Hmmm - brakes - they usually drag more if not bedded right - Haven't had that problem yet - but when that happened on the discs of other vehicles - take the pads out - sand them lightly to flat with fine material - then reinstall and rebrake in - lol - I don't know that this is applicable to motorcycles - but it should be.
Also feel the rotor for grooves, and warping - would be another cause.

Going to 49 state BlastMaul tomorrow - go for a ride to check everything, then take Vader for a ride before clean up for the trip for 'American Sport Bike Night' 5th anniversary - monday. All in all I'm looking forward to an enjoyable Holiday weekend - Happy ThanksGiving Day folks!

Looking foward to it! They are both in great shape mechanically - knock on wood - lol - was test driving the red - response is just a tad crisper without the CA stuff - probably the new lines and rerouting, and a new intake boot as well as breather - lol - caped the two line spigots - the one from the carb and the one on the pro intake - reroute and add breather to end - done! Canister and excess lines disapear and she's 49 state - lol - Now elbow grease for touching up and cleaning both of them and then to a little piece of curvy heaven to wear the edges on the red's tires - gotta have even wear you know - ;0)lol - as the dailly driver the tires would get shoulders if I didn't work on that;0)

Evadave-Hows the brakes?Sorry, busy last few days! Wheel will spin(mine about 3/4 turn),you will hear rubbing-normal.Remember your weight, plus the bikes weight is 500lbs+, so that little bit of drag means nothing. One reason to pull the caliper without removing pads is that it leaves less room for error, seeing as you have only removed 2 bolts, nothing else!
But, all in all, tough to say really if there is a problem without seeing the bike.My guess is no burning brake smell, and if you dont have trouble rolling the bike, there probably isnt a problem!
Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving weekend - I did! Erik

Erik,
Thanks for asking! The brakes are better now than they were before. After I put the bike back together, I gave the wheel a spin and heard less rubbing than before. The wheel went much farther around, too.

I went for a little ride on Sunday (got the wheel w/new tire mounted Saturday after dark). I didn't check to see how well it coasted--didn't even think about it. I was just glad to be back on the bike. :)

I'll have to give the bike a "coast check" to see if the brakes are better now. Now if it would just warm up a tad... (yeah, right. Welcome to Winter.)

Been pretty quiet here - what winter projects do you have for your Blast?

Personally - I'm about done with projects for a while so I can work on my skills more, but I'm starting to collect parts for future projects.

Finally - people really do like this bike - Red or Black - both get a lot of complements and questions - and in the city of SF thats saying something - most consider it an ideal in city bike with traveling ability - lol - and the women just think they look cool;0) -

winter projects?
Definatly time for a colour change.

I'm getting the pro series cams and ignition module for xmas (from myself of course).

I'm trying to find someone who can fabricate a new exhaust tip for my V&H. It lets the exhaust almost right onto the rear tire, and I burned through a dunlop in under 3000kms. If anyone knows of any fixes for this, I'd love to hear about them.
And finally, a new ferring. Actually, it's similar to EZ's "vader" ferring, sharp angles and duel hologen lamps. I found this in a dirtbike shop, $80 (cdn). And, well, if I get all this finished before winter is through, winter is taking too long!
