Well after the saga of the last few weeks, I was finally able to make my commute on in to work on my blast. I did have a little issue, which may be nothing. When heading in, the bike seamed to bog down for the first 10 minutes or so, like it wasn't warmed up. I had it warm up for about a minute, 30 seconds or so after the fast idle had gone down to the normal idle. I went to take off at a stop sign, and it died as I gave it throttle. It started right back up. About 2 minutes later, when accelerating in 3rd gear or so, it kind of sputtered pretty significantly, and then took off. It did this two or three times in the first 5 miles of the trip, but then it never happened again. It was a balmy 61 degrees on the ride in this morning. Hopefully its nothing, and its just that the bike is cold blooded, and needed to get to temp, but I thought I would throw this out there.

Try tightening the clamps on your intake boot just a tad - could be loose, if it still happens - replace boot - das boot strikes again! - lol

Ugh! Good thing I pack a spare boot and small screwdriver under the seat!

It does have a proseries unsupported intake on it too

Hmm... Boot looked to be fine. Jetting? My guess is that it is stock.

My bike did the same thing yesterday. It had never done that before but it was colder than it had been. At least thats what I thought it was. Let it run a bit this morning and made it to work alright. LOVE THE WEATHER! Perfect for biking in the morning. Who needs coffee when you have cold wind blasting you in the face?

Ooh! Ooh! Put HEET in the gas tank! I just remembered! Had similar problem! STP (or similar) gas treatment too!

I just started riding this bike Monday, and I have put 150 miles on it : ) So glad I chose it over the 250cc bikes.

I'm going to try to work out a bike friendly route to work today and try to work up to riding to work on Friday.

I'm having a similar issue, ok well maybe completely opposite.

My bike starts up and runs fine, but it chugs and sounds like it's going to die (and has a couple of times) after the fast idle drops off. I don't notice it sitting at lights. I have let it sit for 4 minutes after fast idle (died twice had to restart) thinking maybe it just was not warmed up.

I know my battery is weak (original battery) could this mess with idle?

I am also not sure how old the gas is in it. I know it's been ridden this summer by the previous owner but I don't know how much gas has actually passed through it. The tank is ready to be filled. I was about to put a fresh tank with some SeaFoam in it in a vain effort to cleans the carb.

Thoughts?

Does it chug only when the fast idle drops off? If so, I think adjusting the idle mixture screw a little could help. See the Carb section for that.

How long should the fast idle drop off after it's been sitting cold on in a garage on a 80 degree summer evening?

After thinking about it a bit I wonder if there is a bad sensor / thermocouple that is kicking off too early keeping the bike from warming up completely?

It takes a minute or two if at all. It doesn't use sensors or thermocouples to heat up. It starts heating up the autoenricher. As that heats up, it slowly closes.

Did you check your idle mixture screw? There's a metal plug covering it. You just have to drill it with a tiny drill bit, about 1/16", making sure that you don't go too far in. You then pop it out with something sharp. There's a screw under it. See the carburetor section for pictures and details. You'll need to screw the screw in until it just stops, then unscrew it about 2 1/2 turns. That may take care of the problem completely. It worked on mine!

No, I didn't... but I will.

I was assuming that if the idle smoothed out after being warmed up a little longer (ride to the first stop sign) that it wasn't the idle causing it but some warm up issue. As my daughter tells me... "Daddy you don't know everything..."

Any time it runs funny, stalling or sputtering or running oddly after it's warmed up, check your boot and air filter.

The boot happened to me and mine exhibited similar signals.

Concur, however, also do your primary adjustment by the sound method - the factory sends them out a bit tight, which could cause low idle, bog, and low top speed.

If it is just trying to die at the point of stepping off fast idle, a 1/4 turn on the idle mixture screw, counter-clockwise, might fix it.

Agree...mine was really lean at idle once it came off the auto enrichener and would fart and die until it got good and warmed up...a little tweak to the idle mixture screw fixed that.

A note on the auto enrichener...since it actually works from heat, I have found that here in the land of the blazing sun..on a hot day the enrichener may not work at all...solar energy at work! : )
