Don't you just have to drill a new indexing hole in the old timing cup? And I don't think location is too critical, because you have quite a bit of adjustment in the timing module.

Aaron posted a very good description of the timing cup issues in the 515 big bore topic.

'Okay', If the guy (no offense Stuart or others) says he cant make a carb support, he definitely shouldn't be driving out valve guides in a cyl head!Pro series cams are a best bet.Still better off swapping his head for a complete Nallin head, than doing guides, springs, lapping etc.. Lot less work and error involved.
That's what I love about this site, people who are as obsessive as I am-Well I can get cams, but if I do the headwork I can get better cams, but if the head is off might as well go 515 bore, well if I'm going to change pistons & cylinders lets go 600cc,well if I'm splitting the cases how about that Baker six speed....

James(Jprovo), I had the K&N way before the Pro-Series came out, if not I'd probably go for the Pro-series and try to monkey some kind of support up for it. Either that or wait for Buell to fix it.

All, I read the posts by Aaron on the timing cup, that and the other work needed for the XB cams or even the B70 cams looks a bit (a lot) beyond my skill level right now, so it appears the B50's are probably my best bet right now. EZ, you make it sound like there is a deffinite increase in usable power from this upgrade so I'm tempted to go for it. EZ how hard of a job is it to install in your opinion? As it is now it is tons better than stock, but we're always looking for that next fix aren't we!

Thanks again for the great help here and friendly climate! Oh and new front and rear Kendas go on tomorrow. Woo-hoo!
-stuart

GearHead, No offense taken, I agree compeletly I _shouldn't_ be messen with that stuff. B50's/Pro-Series are the most I'm going to tackle at this point (and I might even wuss out and have someone else put them in for me, just don't tell EZ!)

As for cam installation - I did not do the first set, however, I do plan to do the next set. for difficulty - I cannot picture it being any more difficult than swapping out cams on a VW Bug and that was just time consuming - lol - would suggest that if your attention to details mechanical is not in a comfort zone then have someone else do it - with two bikes the pressure is off me to hurry - so I can take my time and do it right (most screw ups come from rushing to get done and back on the road!). As for the Guides - they make pullers for such things - I used one doing a Berg VW Bug head, would suggest using the same for this head. Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Tim, I read Aaron's post, I was just thinking that it would be easier to change how the timing cup indexes instead of cutting a new slot and filling the old one. Of course, it's not going to be much of an issure if you run an different ignition madule in "twin mode" and have a lost spark.

Stuart,

If you plan on having someone else install the cams, you might want to price out putting in B70 cams and doing the headwork too. Your bike might be in the shop an extra day, but it might be the way to go if you think the B50's aren't going to be enough of a change (and you can afford it of course).

Thanks for the advice, I will talk to the HD shop here in town, there's only one up here in BFE (Spokane, Wa) and see if they have any experience w/ this stuff. I doubt they've done anything like this to a blast, there just aren't many up here.

One more question, how is the streetability (is that a word) of the bike after the B50/B70/XB cam change? This bike is my daily driver for most of the year. It only stays home when there is snow or ice out on the road, about 3 months a year.

Thx again.

-stuart

ps. What springs and values would I upgrabe to, the XB ones? thx

all three cams are very streetable - the little extra work for the B70 or XB - springs and valve guides (which can be found at the Nallin site - call them and they'll hook you up - the link is in the Thumper KV Links section)- The B50/Pro Series cam would of course be the least amount of trouble for them to install. That sounds like my old situation - one bike and it the daily driver - thats why I went and picked up another - lol - still - you have those winter months and thats the best time for those type of upgrades - that way there is no worry or rush to get back on the road and you'll be ready for spring when all the worst weather is gone. Sounds like your planning to have even more fun Stuart! Coolness! Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Alright EZ, I just got off the phone w/ Nallin, and they said they don't have value guides for stock values on a blast. They said there values are wider so the blast stock ones wouldn't fit and would just bounce around in them. Maybe I didn't say the right thing to them??? Got any help for me???

thx

Stuart,

There are a ton of good aftermarket valves and guides. A good HD dealer or Independent should be able to handle all your needs and suggest a good package. Nallin Racing also has a Blast valve spring package for under $100. The Blast is really similar to a Sportster as far as engine architecture is concerned, so the engine work is not a big deal for a competent shop.

As far as streetability is concerned, the B70 or XB cams will probably be more peaky than the B50 cams, but they will make more power on top. If it was my daily driver street bike I'd stick with the B50 cams.

James

BTW, as far as Nallin not having guides the fit the stock Blast valves, If you replace the valves and guides as a set you're cool. I'd have a serious chat with Nallin as to what you are trying to achieve, or talk to your local dealer/indie shop.

Just got done talking with Justin of Nallin - you are correct - you would have to go with their valves as well for the guides (as I did - thats why the oops - sorry), however, their springs will work just fine. Also - since that is the case - I asked him what he would recommend - he responded that the Rowe product in the Drag Specialties catalog (link in links section) - intake # ds-199975 and exhaust # ds-199988 would be a much better upgrade than the stock units! And finally the XB cam would be much superior to the B70 cam and not that peaky in comparison - just stronger.

Thanks EZ, your dark ways are strongly tempting me to go for the XB's and an ignition kit (7200 should be okay, right?). Depends on the $$ and what the local HD show thinks of it. The Buell guy seems pretty cool and excited to mess with it. I'll have to stop by and chat w/ him this weekend. If I do it I'll have to get them to throw in some before and after Dyno runs!

Question: Don't you need to do a 'stage 2' port on the head for the bigger values from Nallin? Just curious, I wouldn't guess that they'd be plug an play.

-stuart (thanks for letting me take up so much board time!)

Actually - no - if you want to run stock sizes - they will cut them down for you (the Valves)(stage 1 - stock sizes with upgraded head equipment - springs, valves, guides, etc. and a 3angle with port and polish) - they did mine - but if you did go for bigger valves - you'd have to machine the head which means sepperating head from engine) so they would fit, and then while your there sort of thing comes into play and that would be the logical thing to do- port and polish, 3-angle, etc.(equivelent - almost - to a Nallin stage two) - lol - see how the dark side whispers - lol
Yes if you do the required spring/guide switch out - 7200 rpms would not be a problem. -
Take your time and sound it all out, when you are comfortable with you want to do - then have at it and have fun!

Will do. No plans to start until mid Nov. (when it probably won't be a daily driver anymore) but want to have it all well planned by then. No surprises! If you know what I mean.

FYI just got the Kendas on and they look _so_ much better than the other options (IMO). Can't wait to break them and give them a good workout this weekend. The guys at the honda shop (the only place in town that was able to get them for me) were very impressed with how much wider they are. To the touch they seem to be a lot softer than the stock tires were but that could just be because the stock tires were down to the bone and I can't remember what they were like new. ~135 out the door, I probably over paid but I wanted them quick and they got the job done.

Yea - on a VW Bug - I used a puller designed for such things. Why would it not be a good idea - you just have to keep everything centered and keep the valve fully seated - tricky but been done. Why not the same thing on a Blast head - hey is there something not being shown or discused in the manual that makes this not possible? Just curious. Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Not a good idea, if you don't clean the ports before you pull the guides. What do you do with the valves???

I think that there are clearance issues (like the frame) on the Blast that would prevent you from removing the guides with the head on the bike.

Cleaning??? - Just drop the front - same as did for the rocker box gasket - the valve gets suspended to be held in place - GT - JBOTDS!

I think Aaron said that the front isolator mount will need to be removed to get the springs out.

I'm just picturing a Valve sitting on top of a piston, or trying to slide a guide over the valve then into the head.I guess that it's not that big a deal if you pump up the combustion chamber with compressed air to keep the valve seated, it just sounds funky, especially with something as easy to sercive as the Blast.

I don't know, I'd rather spend the extra time to pull the head.

Heck - when I switched out guides and springs on my Bug - I did that laying on my back - looking up, I actually figured this to be easier since I wouldn't be uncomfortable while working. Well thats a lot of months down the line for me - so we'll see then - if I run into an unforseen dificulty - you guys will be the first to know - lol - right now I'm just still trying to get everything dialed in so I can take another trip up North to visit my sister (600+mi 1 way) - and get the Red up to the same par that the Black used to be at before the rebuild. Ray,thats great!
Ez. The manual says to remove the guides toward the combustion chamber.-But- I can see the reason for a VW shortcut, but the Blast is too easy to take apart.(1 reason for purchase). And being more expensive than VW parts I think I'd pull the head(just couldn't trust not recutting the valve seats). And I just couldn't risk dropping hard carbon particles into the motor. It's just idle discussion anyway,we have the same line of thinking and I'll bet you'll pull the head! Also, there are a whole lotta shortcuts for VW motors that you wouldn't do to anything else! Erik

Are you going to be able to make Glendale this month (the 28th)? We have to get togher sometime before winter sets in and we have to winterize our bikes and the snow comes and.... wait we're Californians... Seriously, we have to go riding sometime.
