Newt - I'll look around - I'm pretty good at finding stuff.

Anything said over the net should be taken with a grain of salt!

Fairweather - not I - I did notice that you had edited your own post - perhaps hitting the wrong button - has happened to me - lol - if you feel it really needs saying - please repost - sorry for the inconvienience this caused you - like I said though - its happened to me also - sometimes, I suspect that when several people are trying to post at the same time something gets lost in the final effort. Joys of the net!

Sorry Guys - down with a Migraine all day - going back to bed - lol - but I'm sure everyone knows my opinion by now on this topic - lol -

to the moderator(s): Thank you for your hard work on this board. It has been a priceless source of information, even if you "take it with a grain of salt." This is the easiest board to navigate or search by far, and the content has always been relavent. Please keep up the good work!!!

Ez, thanks for the offer to look around. I've got some books in my library on 4 strokes (multi-cylinders), head modifications etc., just nothing specifically on 4 stroke singles.

I had hoped maybe one or more of the members had ran across some work they thought was good enough to recommend. Or maybe had some thoughts they might want to air out.

I'm sitting here looking at this screen while my mind keeps wandering back to thoughts like, why did the factory see advantages in setting up the xr750's as "twingles". Where did they compromise in the Blast that we can exploit here on the streets. Not just so much the bolt on stuff, but working with what we have. Without going to a big bore, are there pistons (wiseco, etc..) that will rectify the combustion chamber mismatch. Hell, can I even just machine the piston that's already in it, is there enough meat on it to do it safely. Has anyone made an exhaust system of their own? Would a "thunderheader" type can work? Any idea why the "force" uses the length they do or the logic on the angles they use on the reverse cone? Is there a cam grind similar to an XL PB+ minus, minus or R5 that will bolt right into a Blast? And will they have the same type of effect? And why would a cam designed for a twin work as well for a single?

Well, sorry for rambling. Just thinking out loud.
Hope the sun shines on the road your riding and ya'll have a good day. Me, I just got home from work and I'll probably grab a beer and head out to the garage. I have that smog pump a friend gave to me and have yet to figure out how to make it work or why I would even want to. I laugh at myself thinking of a cheap blower....but it just doesn't seem to go away.

Rear cams off any sporty will work, also the XB - though you want to improve the springs and relocate the timing cup hole to the Blast location, Rays running a 'stock' set up with fancy headwork and cam - the information to be divulged after the salts - he promises - 50+ hp. For the exhaust question see the knowledge vault - those questions have answers there.
Other piston combo.s have been ran - haven't heard of anyone modifying stock.
See the kv engine and racing and 44 mag sections on turbo/blower thoughts on the Blast - the question has yet to be answered in reality.

I did the 15,000 mile sprocket / belt change on the Blast last night. Nothing too exciting other than typical home mechanic shenanigans.

Example? I'd just bought a set of fairly sturdy LOOKING torx bits. Some were 1/4" drive, the larger ones 3/8", and one 1/2" for the big mutha and they looked like the hardened impact wrench type of stuff. The first bit I used the first time was the T40 - a 3/8" drive bit. It became unhappy looking when I was removing the 5 bolts holding on the sprocket. It stripped when I went to put the 40 degrees of additional torque on the bolt after installing the new sprocket. That was lame.

Anyway, the marginally interesting thing was that the sprocket came with 6 bolts / washers and the Blast only needs 5. That bag o' bolts was probably from a tuber or something. Anyway, that extra bolt sure came in handy 'cause when the torx bit broke, it did some damage to bolt #5.

Someone here mentioned that the black stuff on the Blast sprocket is actually a teflon coating. Well, if that is the case and if we have to replace sprockets 'cause that coating wears off, lemme tell ya that ours was definitely worn off.

Thanks for pointing me in the right directions. After reading some of the subtopic files I realized there were more appropriate places to post in here.
Looks like rain today...bummer. May be taking the bike on a ten hour round trip this weekend if this real estate deal comes together. Really need to put a gel pad in.

Yuppers - the gellpad the first thing I did on my first bike before the Corbin seat - now the red has that seat!
Well - I updated my bikes site - here it is:

Gel pad, definitely need one. I am pondering an Ironbutt ride on the blast, but wouldn't with the current seat. In addition to my fat a$$, we have the short seat for the wife, which has less padding, of course. Dang if my rear doesn't start hurting after 100 or so miles.

I did a SS1000 in May of 2000, for my Iron Butt membership. Huntsville AL to New Orleans to Nashville and back to Huntsville in under 24 hours. My butt hurt for a week. I now have a Corbin and am loving it.

The ride is on. Leavin at o' dark thirty in the morning. Droppin down from over 7,000 ft here in the San Francisco mountains to around 3,000ft and 100+ degrees. Have to cross the Apache Reservation and some of the most desolate, god forsaken land. I'm taking the digital and will snap some pics. No gel pad yet and I've got the low seat that came with the bike. Yeah, a hundred miles and you hurt, after the next hundred its just insane pain then numbness. Wish I had more time to ride. Haven't decided yet if I'll climb back up to the high country on the Coronado Trail (Hwy 191, Clifton to Alpine) or up through the Salt River Canyon. Check out your July/August issue of Fuell pgs 8-10. That's where I'm headin. Gotta love ridin Arizona!

Well if you feel you got to - I got family at the rez - lol - at least enjoy the ride! You'll be walkin texas style - lol - but you could pick up an AirHawk strap on pad - about 140 dollars - they are talking about it in the Quick board - I know you can find them in some large motorcycle stores also - 2 in SF -

Dan43blast,
I respect your ride! Mine was a piece of cake compared to that. 1000 miles on a 1200cc machine is rather easy (provided the seat is halfway decent). On a 500cc machine, it's more of a challenge. fwiw, my first IBA ride was Lavonia, GA (Atlanta), to Mobile, AL, to Lake City, FL and return. 1157 miles, 19.5 hours.

Newt,
Ride safe and have fun!

I visit my sister about 2 to 3 times a year - usually once by bike - 629 there - and then the next day back home - not so bad with the Corbin, wasn't to bad with just the gell pad insert on the high seat, but the one time on the stocker - lets just say I was ready for that John Whayne movie - lol - think water! Just got back. 611 miles. Seat? Is there a seat on a stock Blast?! Oh my god! I used to ride a bare bones rigid pan (among others). Stripped baby, all the way. Apes, hand shift jock top, grey primer for paint and a seat pan upholstered with a couple strips of duct tape, THAT was a more comfortable ride. EZ, which res is your sister on? I went through both the San Carlos and the White Mountain Apache reservations. I've got a decent place here if you ever think about making Flag a stopping point on one of your family visits.
Know what you mean about water, been riding the Sonoran desert for many moons. Always have some with me. The desert will eat your lunch real quick without it. Came back up through the Salt River Canyon. Always a challenge, especially for those with a fear of heights like me. Only screamed a couple of times...LOL. LD, hey thanks for the safety sentiment, preciate the thoughts man.

My fathers' in White Mountain - never thought of riding thru the desert alone to see him - might give it a shot some day ! I live in SF and my sister lives in the Lassen Mountains between Redding and Lassen - the last 100 miles really makes up for the first 500 - lol - sounds like you had a great time! Yea the call of the gel pad or Corbin or Sargent or your local shop - anythings better than stock! - lol - just updated our links section in the Thumper KV section, there should be enough there to start with for bike modification ideas - if you include our Sponsers! - will continue to add as I go! - Got Thump?! HELP!!!!!!!!!
I am stranded in cottage country, about 350 km from home (cambridge ontario). I blasted up here a couple nights ago, and as I was giving my blast the once-over before I was to leave this morning, I noticed white score marks around the seams of my air box (stock).

It ran great the whole way here, no problems, a slight decrease in torque (could have just been my imagination). Anyways, long story short, I have no way to get my bike home, no dealers nearby (and its a holiday anyhow), and I'm worried I'll do more damage trying to get home.

I'll be checking in all day, I hope someone will be able to help get blast and myself home! I can post pictures if needed.

Thanks in advance,
Cassius

Relax, go back to a calm state, get rid of the red.

What exactly do you mean by "white score marks"?

Do you mean the airbox is separating, or that there is a white residue around the sealing? You might be able to just ride home, maybe pack some duct tape. Just ensure that the carb is still secured to the intake.

Post more precise info on what exactly you're talking about. A pic or two would be good. Maybe open up your air box as well and shoot a pic of that too. It's hard to know if you're talking about a physical failure of the air box, or just an air leak.

EZ --- Here is a pic of where the scoring is... The inside of the airbox is fine, just has what seems to be oil/fuel film, and a nice little puddle in the bottom. (breather hose is removed, so it isn't from there).

Thanks again!sick little blast

Dan,
I'm in NE Georgia, Toccoa. Great twisties all around. Let ME know if/when you are headed this direction. A group of us Bandit riders get together often at various places and when it is in this vicinity, I'll let you know. You'd have a ball.

Ken,
I got through Lake City 2-3 times a year for various events. Will let you know when I'm passing through again!

Ride it home, I doubt anything is wrong with it. My bike does real similar stuff with the stock exhaust and unmolested carb. You get some spit out of the carb from the exhaust pulse, and it spits on the airbox lid. The gas seeps through the box. Not a big deal, clean it up and ride it.

Ken,
I'll probably have the Bandit with me, so don't hold that against me. <IMG SRC="> Not sure how much touring the wife will approve for me on the Blast. Would need a gel seat for that. Let me know if you work your way up here. We can ride great roads for hours on end. Will definitely contact you though.

I've only seen a couple of Blasts around here, one was at Deals Gap and the other was on the Blue Ridge Parkway, so they were a long way from here. I did meet a guy at the local harley shop who's wife has one. Told him about this board, but both he and his wife ride with the cruiser mentality. He was shocked when I told him about scraping pegs and such.
