Ed yeah true it would be very cool. Maybe sometime down the road right now the plan is for 250cc and 350cc 'Macchi and do a 515 Nallinization for my Blast with a few special peices I'm going to make and have made. Also lookin for an S1 and some maybe get me a 600cc sportbike. Oh also need to do something with the CB450 project sometime to lol. I'm not addicted to motorcycles honest

got an intresting question to the rest of the old time Blasters - lol - how long before you have to change your rotor? And how long before you have to change your pads? If I'm lucky I'll get 7grand on this second rotor and I'm averaging - in hilly/curvey SF - 600 to 800 mi per set of front pads - my back are still origional and still over 80% - lol - note - just got handlebars and grips in for my red Blast - BlastMaul - Iridium plug arrives fri, - I'm thinking that this one would be more the Daily driver while I do things to ole BlastVader - so I'm thinking a modern cafe - with factory stuff but stripped - I like em nakid - lol - Got Thump?! I've got a couple other things I've got to do, but if all goes well I'll be working on it this weekend.

Gotta get a tv down to the shop so I don't miss the 500.

Like I always said - SF is very hilly with a lot of curves and twisting streets;0) - around here its not unusual for a set of pads to last around 1000 miles and if you get on them less. Banke wave rotors would be next. Guess I'm having too much fun with my BlastVader - lol - Got thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Still Blastless waiting on parts. Just wanted to post as I've been feeling left out latey ;).

Somehow the 3 weeks seems like 3 months. Atleast the weather has been cold and crappy for spring in PA.

I almost bought a Duck last weekend. I'm jonesin' for gyroscopic therapy ...

P.S. Doesn't someone here also have an F series BMW?? If so how do you like it and how does it ride? I've been thinking about getting the F650GS (second bike, not replacement) but would like some trusted first hand opinions before treking down to the only not so local dealer.

The San Carlos Battletrax was a Blast. The parking lot course reminded me of auto course. The event deserved to be better publicized. I went through 9 time trials. My time improved from 63.89 seconds to 55.10 seconds. I thought it was a great way to improve my cornering skills.

Yup - it was a kick! I'm still working on pics - sizing etc. - I started with a sixty nine and brought it down to an average of sixty point secs with a top 0f 59.80 - so by days end I had a ten second improvement - though I didn't ride as much as some - knee - I still got a lot of laps in and was considered very consistant - lol - well at least there were a few slower than me! - out of 14 about 5 had slower - small crowd just made it more fun for the rest in the amount of times we could do the course - the V - rod was doing 54's consistantly and dragging parts big time but since the owner was also a dealership owner just made it more fun to watch - though the Goldwing was doing pretty consistant 55's - lol - he left his Buell at home - wanted to see how well he'd do on his cruiser - lol - Steve on an XB9S took fastest even though there were guys on two stroke singles putting down times taking 2nd, 3rd and 4th fast time slots - lol - Boys and toys - I got some pics of them as well - all and all a great time! If the early days fog had burned off earlier more probably would have showed - hell I made the mistake of riding down 280 in dense fog - I was pretty soaked for a couple hours -lol - Got Thump?! BattleTrax - update - my friend Joe told me Steve Downey on an xb9s won the regional for average consistant time - he was also the fastest - knocking on the BattleTrax record for doing the course in under 40 sec.s - only the supermotard two stroke singles even came close to his time and they had everyone else beat by over 5 sec.s - His level of riding was so far above the rest - knees dragging (- someone needs to buy him leather and pucs - it couldn't have been comfortable), and wheel lifting from each corner - totally fearless - totally cool - California will be well represented in the finals with him there - I'm sure! Well, Ray, it's on the lift and we got started on it but it's not done yet. It's my current project, though.

I would've probably had it together by now but I went to leave work last Friday and the S2's battery was dead as a doornail. The stator went south. Which doesn't sound like that big of a deal ... but, it ended up taking most of Sunday, from the time the 500 got over until 8:00pm. Starter and battery had to come out to route the wire, plus I had to clean the Red Line Heavy Shockproof wax residue out of the clutch and gearbox, plus the V&H rear bracket was busted up and I had to reweld it. So I blame H-D and Red Line and V&H for your Blast not being on the dyno right now ;) Does that work? I should have it on the dyno this weekend.

Well I finally got the time to try and remedy my Clutch/Tranny problem last night.

I was able to talk to a factory rep. about possibilities and he gave me a few ideas. But as always he said to start with the simple stuff and go from there. The secondary "clunk" made him think that it might be the primary drive sprocket. I pulled off the cover and the drive sprocket was fine.

He said change the primary fluid and adjust the clutch and take it from there. Other than that, it could possible be internal, which means splitting the cases.

I changed the fluid(full synthetic) and adjusted the clutch.(The torx screws were not that bad to remove, fortunately) Neutral is still kind of hard to find and the light is still intermitent. I wasn't able to get out too much to check the operation because of time constraints. I will check it further tonight. Hopefully I have gotten rid of the secondary "clunk"

I am pretty sure that I did find the source of the not being able to idle in neutral problem though. The Sidestand Safety Switch appears to be malfunctioning. I had the bike on a swingarm stand (Thanks again MikeJ:):) ) After adjusting the clutch, I started it up to see if I screwed anything major up. The sidestand was up at the time. I was going to lower the bike and take it for a test ride. So I lowered the side stand before lowering the bike, and the bike died out. I restarted the bike and when I let out the clutch it died again. I put the side stand up and the bike would idle. I disconected the side stand switch and the bike would not idle with the clutch let out. I jumped the connector and the bike would idle with the clutch let out. With the bike running, I pulled out the jump in the switch and the bike predictably died. I will put in a new switch tonight(~$12.00) and that should take care of the idleing problem.

I will give the tranny/clutch problem some more checking and thought, but if it comes to splitting the cases???????? Thats something I am not fully equiped to do. So everybody keep your fingers crossed.

Jerry

If it's reacting to changes in the side stand position, I would think the switch is fine.

Basically, if I understand correctly, the bike dies when the stand is down and the clutch is out, even when in neutral, right?

Sounds like it doesn't know it's in neutral. Was the neutral light on when this happened?

Yes that's it Aaron. The neurtal light is intermittent. So my best guess is that the light was not on when I had the bike on the stand.

Come to think of it. Before I changed the fluid last night, I let the bike warm up before taking it for a ride to get everything warm. It idled fine and the neutral light was on. While getting my gear from the house, I heard the bike die. My first thought was that I forgot to turn on the gas. I went to start the bike again and it would die everytime the clutch was let out. I could not get the neutral light to come back on. The nuetral light does work when the bike is cold and at high idle though. Are you thinking that it might possibly be the neutral light/safety switch? I may be able to diagnose this tonight with the aid of my trusty shop manual.

If I remember correctly the neutral light/safety switch runs off of the 5th gear right? I sure hope it's not internal problems with gears.

Thanks for all your help,

Jerry

Yeah, when the bike is in neutral, the clutch and sidestand switches should be irrelevant. What's happening is the neutral circuit isn't working, so with it sitting there idling, the bike thinks you're in gear with the sidestand down and the clutch let out. That's the very condition it's designed to protect you from.

Not certain on the Blast, but on a Twin, the neutral switch works by a little roll pin that sticks out of the shifter drum. It touches the switch which grounds the circuit. So it's not really a switch, it's just an insulated contact holder that sticks into the transmission case in front of the front pulley. That's where I'd go first, put it in neutral with the light not working and see if that contact is grounded. If it's not getting grounded, there may be an issue with the contacts or the roll pin.

If it's getting grounded okay, look at the schematic. Check every mechanical connection. Is there perhaps a relay in the circuit? I don't have the schematic in front of me.

Good luck.

Hi Aaron, I'm new here, but not to bikes or XL engines. I have a 2001 Blast that I plan to build into a street sleeper. I already have the engine out for machining for a 600cc kit.(I also have Andrews B70 cams, yada-yada-yada) But while I'm here, I was wondering if I should split the cases and maybe lighten the crank/flywheels. What do YOU think ? I know that horsepower won't really increase, but the ability to rev faster would. Does your gang perform flywheel lightening on customers cranks ??? Any downsides ?? I have my own access to a machine shop. Thanks.

Well, you're going to have to split the cases to bore them for the 600cc kit. If you have a way to lighten and rebalance the flywheels while you're in there, I'd sure as hell do it. It'll give it more power as measured on an inertia dyno. No, we're not tooled up to do much in the way of crank work, except assembly and truing of the bolt together style. We farm out the balancing to a local shop that's really good. Keep in mind the Blast uses a pressed together assembly, it requires a 50 ton press and a bit of expertise to disassemble and reassemble it.

I thought about the flywheels but heard that if I lightened them that I would have trouble idling - is this true? I like keeping my bike streetable but I always look for that little extra edge - lol - so if I was misinformed I'd like to know - cause here in Cali we have several crank experts who could do the job. Well, not having done it, I hate to comment authoritatively. But I'll say this ... the Blast isn't the only single cylinder motorcycle I've ever taken apart, but it certainly has the biggest flywheels I've ever seen on this kind of a motor! If it was mine, I'd do it.

BTW, we have a brand spanky-new Blast flywheel assembly sitting in a box if anyone needs it. I'd sell it cheap! $100 plus shipping.

Thanks Aaron, thats just what I wanted to hear. And what I meant to say was "...when I split the cases-yada yada yada".
And to Ezblast, lightening flywheels is one of the oldest tricks in the book to get a motor spinning faster....but you can go overboard. Two things happen if you lighten too much, #1 the motor starts to vibrate even more(depending on the # of cylinders), #2 if you went really-REALLY light on some single cylinder motors ,the motor might not have the tendency to idle smoothly and may stall. In some road race bikes I've heard about with ultra light flywheels, they even tended to stall between downshifts. But I'm not sure if that was an old wives-tale or not? I know that the Blast crank assembly is god awful heavy- built for a locomotive *lol*. I also believe that Harley's Bill Werner has feather weight flywheels in the Flattrack blasts ? So I was just asking Aaron if he thought it was cool.
Btw Aaron, did you get that "brand spanky-new Blast flywheel assembly" off of Ebay ?

Does anyone run the Buell split V spark plug on the P3? Is it worth getting? I guess at $8 dollars it can't hurt. What about swapping out the spark plug wire for a pro-series or other "performance" wire? Is this something worth doing? Just looking for a few more ways to tweak my bike until I get money to purchase CAM and 515cc kit. -chuck
