just bought my blast and need to diagnose its poorish running . i keep reading on here and elsewhere about the fragile , prone to failure carb-manifold boot . seing how the nearest buell dealer is over an hour away , has anyone here tried any thing else other than making sure they keep extra crappy factory couplings on hand ?

i just stuck a caliper on the manifold near the coupling and it looks like high quality 2" radiator hose would fit the bill nicely and last longer ?

i did read an old post here yesterday, but cant remember where , but it didnt seem to gather much in the way of replies and sorry if i'm asking this in the wrong section .

Its in the knowledge vault/engines/carburetion intakes, in the main topics.

Forget the hype. There is nothing wrong with the factory intake coupling. Most of the problem is in either installation or the elimination of the factory airbox (the factory airbox supports the carb).
They are cheap and easy to change, so keep an extra boot on hand, but if you stay with the stock airbox and dont experience any unrelated running problems, it is unlikely you will have a problem with it. It is really a sturdy little bugger.
EZ has tried just about everything and the factory boot seems about the best. He changes boots regularly and tries just about every new boot idea that comes along-I'll let him do the research.
As for me I've used the original intake boot for 11,000+ miles-8000 with the stock airbox,2000 miles with an unsupported Pro Series intake and at least another 1000+ miles on the racetrack-still unsupported. We did finally change the boot due to a carb problem at the track. Since we ran out of parts to change and we had a new boot on hand, we changed it (it turned out to be an internal carb problem). The boot still looked good (its now the spare on my street Blast).
I will concede that if you live in an area with drastic temperature changes, that will affect boot life.

Lastly a bone stock Blast is very reliable. Once you start to modify it, thats where it becomes susceptible to problems.

I changed my intake boot at about 18K because it was starting to crack. It wasn't actually leaking yet, but I figured I'd take care of it before it becomes a problem. I've blown it off from backfiring twice, but it hasn't backfired at all since I adjusted the idle screw. I have the stock box, too.
