Dunno if this is old news or not, but I did actually find a piece of CF that works on the Blast. Granted, it is just a gas cap cover, but it's a start, right?

If anyone is interested it's made by Berg Racing USA, and can be found in the 2003 Dennis Kirk Harley Catalog under part #H18-720 for $27.99

Here's the URL from denniskirk.com:

kyuss again -

the car radiator hose is working for now... I called my local dealer to order a replacement and they're telling me the part doesn't exist in their catalog??!

does anyone know a specific title or better expanation of the part (ruuber tube connecting carb to back of head, about 1 3/4" diameter and 2-3" long) that I can relay to these highly intelligent folk! I even tried to explain it by having him look at a blast floor model he might have there and he still doesn't know what I'm talking about.

Kyuss,

I think the parts guy told me it was called a Carb to Intake Coupler/Coupling. It took me a couple minutes to explain it to them as well. One of these days they'll get it. I mean they have what ... 5 different engines to remember? ;)

Does anyone know why Buell switched to Dot 4 brake fluid from dot 5? And is there any reason I cant change it out to dot 5 brake fluid?(Everything in my garage is dot 5!)
Also, has anyone had problems bleeding their front brakes and getting them back? I usually can get them to 'just' work and then over the next couple months the lever returns to normal.

GH-Eriko,

From what I've read, DO NOT swap out or mix DOT 4 & 5 brake fluids. They are NOT compatible and could potentially do a lot of damage to the brake system.

I believe I read somewhere that the change occured because of a difference the way the two fluids handled heat. But, I could be talking out of my ass on that one.

Gearhead....

Dot 4 is mineral oil based. Dot 5 is silicone based. DO NOT mix them. The mineral oil based Dot 4 stuff is better, as it absorbs water that gets in the system, and so keeps it from rusting parts and allows the performance of the whole system to degrade gradually, not to mention gets water out every time you flush and bleed. Dot 5 won't absorb water, so it can pool up in places, and cause things to corrode. If it pools up in the wrong place and gets too hot, it can boil all at once and you loose all ability to stop (though that is a pretty remote possibility).

That being said, if you do regular flushes both will probably work fine, and I think DOT 5 has a higher operating temperature (that you don't need either).

The different fluids will break down different types of seals as well, so I don't know if I would switch. I think they make some DOT 4.5 or DOT 5.5 or DOT 6 or something weird like that, which is a silicone based fluid but that will absorb water, and that should be safe with DOT 5 seals.

Anyway, stick with the DOT 4 is better stuff, just go get a new can.

Before I attempt this - I'm taking a quick poll - how many would like a local Blast sub category where you could go to your local folder and post a means of contact, favorite area rides and the classic - going from point A to point B this time this date - who's up for it type of thing - I know on the mixed boards this is very popular. Since the Blast now almost equals or even surpasses the number of the rest of the Buells together theres actually a fair chance of meeting and riding with our fellow Blasterds if you use this tool - also if you were planning a trip this would be a good resource - so what do you think - yes or no guys - its up to you - so what do you think?

Hey Guys-The following post was a question submitted by one of my Yahoo Group *Buells-Blast* Members. Do any of you "Experts" have thoughts on this ???

Subject: Tire Q, Front Radial on Rear/Blast ?

Just thought I'd run this by you guys, although I've already pretty
much made up my mind to do it.
I was at a bike swap meet a few weeks ago and picked up a really
great deal on a Continental Radial tire. This guy was selling a whole
pile of brand new Conti's at closeout prices and I sifted through the
stack. I found this "Conti Force" radial in size 130/70ZR-16 and the
price was only $60 ! So I made sure it wasn't a Blem and bought it
after comparing it to the height of a Blast rear tire. It was the
same height, maybe shorter but a little wider.
It wasn't until later that weekend did I read all the lettering on
the tire and notice it said- "Front tire".
I guess my question is, will it be safe to run on the rear of a
Blast ? I looked up what bikes took that size front tire and only
found the '96-'99 Honda CBR900RR took that size front. I figure it
has to be a really strong tire to handle the weight and braking
forces of that SUPERbike ! It looks like a Blast rear tire, so I'm
going to mount it.... let me know if I'm about to die?

Ralph, it says front tire. Thats the only place I would mount it. A good rule to go by as with an motorcycle even if it's an Aprilia RS50 (why I chose this bike,it's small and not much power), is DON'T MIX TIRES. Let's say your running the stock dunlops and it is time to replace the rear tire and the front has 3000 miles left on it, but you've got a new set of pirellis to mount on the bike. What are you going to do? You would ether replace the dunlops (front and rear) with the pirellis or buy a new dunlop for the rear. Always match tires. If you want to run dunlops run k330s (front and rear) not a k501 in the rear and k330 in the front. Never mix brands or different mixes. Doing anything like that is just asking to get hurt or even killed. One other note run the size of tire Buell ment for the bike unless you set the bike up to run 17" buell wheels.

Anyone everyone think about this and Ralph post it over in the yahoo site because I'm to lazy to do it.

Hey Spooky - what kind of can you using for that underseat exhaust of yours - the more I think about it the more I like the idea - It would help alot towards going towards the prefered length of pipe needed for optimum performance Aaron was talking about and you could really step it to discourage reversion waves - I like it the ideas really growing on me Crazy ideas like that start making a lot of sense when you really think about them - its why I think Erik Buell is so awesome - always thinking outside the box! Ez, I have been looking and have not found a can short or small enough to fit under the seat. I did find some small megs that where 12.5" long, might go with those. I have decided to go with a 1 7/8 head pipe about 40" long then going to 2" for a short while, then to duel 1 5/8 or 1 1/2 to snake around under the rear of the bike (duel cans or megs). I might build my own cans. If you go to the Aremacchi site I posted above and look at the special bikes, I might go with some thing like that for the Blast. Need to get some rearsets first, before I start building the exhaust system.

Would 14.5" be short enough - my fav. the 3" suppertrapp universal's length (2lb. weight plus 12 extra discs - lol) - even staying 1 3/4" wrapped all the way back to the can would give you that length and a center mount bracket would be an easy fab - burning some wood now! Spooky,

I like the idea about the underseat exhaust, but I think that a serious clearance problem will reveil itself. If you go too much out to the side then possible burns will appear on your leg. I looked at this possibility when thinking about building a custom street pipe for mine.

One of the possibilities that I have considered is flat box type can that would mount under the seat pan. This was using the one into two idea that you talked about running back into this can.

My final determination was that my thumper still looked the best with a reverse megaphone type which can be purchased from many sources or the Supertrapp universal that EZ mentioned. This is probably due to my love of dirt-track Sprints and old BSA singles though.

You talking about something like the can on Hoser flattrack bike. That might work, but you would have a hard time mounting that under the bike as there is not much room to work with under there. Now mounting it off to the side like most race bikes that would work. Note the WB head pipe is only 32" or 34" long ( going back to what Aaron had to say about the length of exhaust - "Make it shorter and move it up the rpm scale and it gets real narrow. You start giving up everything below, say 5000rpm, to get another little bit on top. You reach a point of diminishing returns after awhile. Not that I would ever explore such a thing." - Thats why WB says to tork cone to help on the bottom end .

more on this in the morning time to go to work.:(

Home at last, more on what Aaron was talking about.

This is what Aaron had to say.

"Long pipes smooth the torque curve?

Well, it's kind of a simplistic way to look at it, but overall I guess I wouldn't argue with it.

If you just look at a pipe alone, no baffling, on a simple system (can't get much simpler than a Blast) basically the length of the pipe determines how long it takes a wave to travel from one end to the other. Since the wave travels at a constant speed, it'll only hit the chamber during overlap at a certain rpm. That shows up on the torque curve as a peak (if it's a negative wave) or a dip (if it's a positive wave). Change the length of the pipe and you can move that dip or peak up or down the rpm scale.

If you make the pipe longer and move the peak down the rpm scale then yes, the torque peak tends to broaden somewhat.

Make it shorter and move it up the rpm scale and it gets real narrow. You start giving up everything below, say 5000rpm, to get another little bit on top. You reach a point of diminishing returns after awhile. Not that I would ever explore such a thing

Keep making it longer and an interesting thing happens. As the torque peak slides off the chart to the left, a new one starts shifting in on the right side of the chart. And guess what, it's stronger. Basically, these waves are traveling up and down the pipe multiple times before they hit the chamber. You've now made it long enough that you're getting one less reflection. Which is good, because less reflections = a stronger wave.

Problem is, that tends to be a *really* long pipe, longer than practical.

Megaphone type mufflers are one approach to broadening out the wave, basically instead of generating one big wave by the pipe outlet, the cone generates a weaker, broader wave because the exhaust gas expands more gradually.

On certain systems, long ones with less reflections, I've actually seen the steps in a pipe generate small torque peaks as well. I've got charts with 3 torque peaks on them ... the outlets (big) and 2 steps (each small)."

The red bike is a Honda Hawk GT. The muffler(can) was hand built. This kinda gives you an idea on the under the seat box deal Ray is talking about. With this you could just run the pipe under the bike, exit on the left side of the swingarm right behind your rearsets, then up under the tail.

The Black bike don't even ask what it is. If you have to ask you need to go (you fill in the blank):)
This gives you an idea for Megaphone type mufflers. You would want to have the exhaust go under the bike, exit on the left side of the swing arm then going from one main pipe to two pipes. so on so forth.

On thing to remember keep the exhaust away from the battery the heat will kill it. you could move the battery to where the airbox was since both of you are running custom filters. This means building a battery box.:)

Spooky,

The fist pic is pretty close to what I was thinking. As for heat there are several heat barrier materials that you can line the battery box and plastic parts with.

I don't myself particularly like the route taken in the last two pics. Too UJMish. My thoughts on the reverse megaphone would be to run the header pipe much like the Bub pipe I have with a bend about the bottom rear of the engine cases to the right side then a gentle slope or curve upwards around where the buddy peg used to mount length would most likely be forward of the back of the rear tire.

I retained the rear part of my buddy pegs because of the sidecar mount. This would make a good area to fix bracketry for the muffler. The exhaust I'm thinking about would be very much like the exhaust on the factory H-D Blast powered dirt-tracker.
