Might be easier to buy an XB and just remove the rear cylinder/piston/rod. :joker:

So is the Blast top gasket kit identical to the standard Sportster/Buell kit? You just don't use 1 gasket?

i seem to remember someone talking about modifying one of the old s1/m2 box swing arms to work on a blast by cutting of the arm for the shock mount and welding a new shockmount to the top of the swing arm. do you remember anything about that ed?...anyway i would think that there has to be an existing sport bike out there that has a swing arm we could use. hmmm

Nope - sorry Josh - Blake - Why - are the mounting points that different? Have'nt stared hard enough at an XB (too heavy to own;0)) to know, What stops the swap?

Sure - have pics of that very modification on several Blasts (inc. Crossroads'), but I was thinking we share a lot of things with the XB and if by coincidence we could swap swing-arms - that old bigger tire question could be answered much more easily and have a built in cooler for desert ridding;0) - lol - still I think I'd better look into this some more -it may be doable - don't know. The older buell's have a different rocker cover, I've heard of them swapping out for the Blast unit but unless they have upgraded the whole Buell line to the XB/Blast configuration - I doupt - what they probably mean is that all Buells are using the XB/Blast set up. Just break out your Blast parts manual and make sure what they hand you has that number - you can use theirs if you don't have one(done that;0) - I'll post the number later - at work and manual at home). I'm pretty sure thats what they must mean (they just don't want to give the Blast credit for having the better setup;0)) Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

EZ,

For running the XB swingarm, even if the singarm to engine case mounts are the same, the shock mounting points are different. You would definitely have to fab something up for the shock. Probably a new shock and a fabbed upper shock mount would be required. But look on the bright side: frame mods are now damn near unlimited with the oil out of the frame. Maybe I should design a nice tube frame to go with the Blast engine, Firebolt Swingarm, a nice aluminum tank (think Royal Enfield)...

Using the XB front suspension is no big deal, just $$$. At most you'll have to make some spacers and a new steering stem.

James did a nice write up about that in the thumper tire section - he the man;0) - James do you think the shock mount would have to be further back on the top side - I thought that as long as you had enough space between top and bottom mounts - works or Penski would probably have the size (or could fab to size) the shock you would need without actually moving anything. Yea -I actually thought the front end part couldn't be that hard a swap just pricy parts. Its the swing-arm part that intrests me most as a thought.

The parts guys are right. A top end gasket set for a Blast is the same as a topend gasket set for any EvoSportster and all Buells minus gasket 17354-89 in fact the parts manuals lists the same kit# (17036-91) for my 99 S3, the Blast and my old 96 Sporster. Hmm... probably with a -91 part # it doesn't cover 90 and prior Sportys.

Ez, I think that the shock mount would have to be much farther forward, notice how the XB shock is much more horizontal than the Blast's. Just looking at it, I don't think that you could use the existing Shock location because you'd have to have a shock that was like 6" long with some F'd up geometry. I think a custom frame (or a modded stocko) would be cooler.

swingarm comparo

Take a look at the shock mounting points.

Josh - you got me - I figured there would be a change when HD switched to the metalic gasket - I did'nt realize that they would simplify matters further by making it generic to the whole line. My bad! but a smart move by HD. Simplify's stocking procedures for the vendor. James - a six inch shock would be a regular stock size from a variety of vendors - price goes down - so are we just talking about the angle - what if one were to use a Blast Works shock (a smaller shock)- I just don't see the negative yet - help me out - the XB shock is more horizontally mounted so that a proper sized performance shock could be used efficiently, But if one were to say use a Blast performance Works shock would the geometry of the XB swing arm mounting point for the shock be wrong if mounted to the top stock Blast location? Got Thump?! As always - Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Hi there,

I am about to get my blast back on the road very soon after being sideswiped in august. I had one question. Does anyone know the tourqe pattern to the primary cover?

Okay jeff,If you number the bolts starting with the bolt on the bottom just left of the drain plug (#2) & go clockwise, this is the order 2,14,13,3,4,5,6,1,7,8,9,10,11, 12 is the center bolt just under shifter.so after you get the sequence down follow the #'s.Sorry no scanner. Hope this helps. (100-120 in-lbs)

EZ,
Change the entire geometric layout of the rear suspension and you might find some interesting problems.

Thanks Gearheaderiko for answering that. Blake - So what your trying to say? is that the mounting point for the shock on the XB swing arm is very different in location than the Blasts? too high? Too foward - I figured if the lower mouninting point is in a simular area then it would be a go, but if its too high - which it looks using James's pics - then you would have to change the geometry - which would be bad/unknown. I think I see what your saying. Balls in your court ball - are the mountings in simular places becomes the question - don't know. Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Josh,

A Top end kit for a sportster will work with a Blast. The rocker box is identical. The only difference is the XL uses a two piece 'spacer' and a valve cover above the rocker box, while the Blast/XB use a 1 piece valve cover that effectively replaces the spacer. You will just have an extra gasket.

Thanks Racer. I guess I thought (like EZ did) that HD wouldn't be smart enough to reuse the old parts. Nope. Oh, look thought the parts book for the engine and check the last 2 digits. Lots of -83 and before stuff.

Ok, new issue. I pulled off the airbox and pulled the filter - only to have a double handful of birdseed fall out.

Anyone got a way to keep mice out of the airfilter? ;)
