As I venture farther down "modifying the Blast" road, I have realized that these things aren't cheap to hop up (but what is right?)...

So let's say I go ahead and spend the 2k for a 600cc kit, and then pay a local shop to do the case boring and parts installation for probably another 1K, what can I expect? I've never ridden a hopped up Blast and I just don't know if 20 Rwhp is worth 3 large (and probably more). My original thought when I sold the Firebolt was to pick up a Blast cheap (which I did), and then mod the little bugger with the leftover cash. I'm starting to think however an older Lightning might be a better choice if I wan't more straight line performance.

So I guess what I'm asking is modifying the Blast truly a labor of love that is fun but no real road burner, or will the end result be some serious wheel lifting horsepower...

A striped down Blast, add works suspension, rearsets, superbike bars and 50 hp is a formula for wheel lifting, curve carving fun and the ability to be different in every sense!

Thanks for the responses guys. The whole point of doing this is of course to be different. Any joe can plop down 7K for his pick of seriously fast used Jap hardware, but I thought the uniqueness of the Blast would be worth the cash. In the original post I should have asked if anyone has this kind of horsepower already. If so, what kind of quarter mile times do you suspect it will run? I'm not looking for a rocket mind you (I had an '02 'Busa and don't miss it for a minute), but I would like something on two wheels that is faster than my '04 GTO...

I wonder how hard it would be to put a turbo where the second cylinder would be?

This is a different type of build - low comp piston - etc. - so build accordingly. Have been looking into it - a hi cc low comp intercooled turbo - delOrto makes great carbs for turbo applications I've seen on VWs for blow through applications -

JNichols: I personally think that kind of work on a Blast is a labor of love. A XB or tuber Buell would be more bang for your buck.
A Blast with 50 hp would be fun.

There are a couple of guys with or near that kind of HP here, but they dont post often.

Lastly it should be pointed out (before the cries of 'Blastphemy' are heard) that I have spent that much money on a Blast and will spend more! But hey " Any joe can plop down 7K for his pick of seriously fast used Jap" or American hardware.

\/--\/--\/-- > I don't think the technology can handle that much power. You'll fry the bike. These are nnot race bikes. Maybe when the technology is refined - in 5 or 10 years , the bike will handle your mods. how many miles do you have on this bike? >

Mike_the_bike:

A BLAST is 1/2 an XB9(engine wise) !!!

It has Lighting Ports which are Pre-Thunderstorm Ports ... They are for
TORQUE ...

If you get Power up to where the stock
belt is not strong enough, improvise and
put a stronger belt on or a chain ...

Under IMPROVISING: put a BLAST engine in
an XB9 Frame, not only will will it be lighter, handle better, it will be 10 YEARS
ahead of its time ...

50 HP is going to be a ticking time bomb - unless you rarely wick it up.

Oh and throw a $600 bill at the top end (valves and cam too) - a few other things such as a bigger carb... and you MIGHT get 50 RWHP.

Bump up the compression just a bit too.

I'd just be afraid that if you were to make a REAL 50HP, you'd be tearing it down every few months if you really rode it much.

Burt Monro, if he were still alive could
build a really fast BLAST ... It would be
the FASTEST BLAST in the WORLD !!! It would make a hundred horse power and would have have to have the rest of the XB clutch plates ...
