The front brakes are finished. Needs a little paint for the fender though. I'll get to that when its running and all the bugs are out.

I used a radial master cylinder from an 04 YZF R1.

I have the new front sprocket on. I'm still waiting for my chain tensioners to be finished. Once I have those, I can make the wheel spacers and start on the rear brakes.

The front sprocket is an 18t from Renthal and the back is an 57t from Vortec. This will give me the same final drive ratio as stock with the 180/55 ZR 17 tire.

17, word of caution I had 17's on my 600 and will keep them on my 650, but I am using an smaller Avon 150. The reason is that you will need to spin the rear tire a little. If it hooks up too well there is a lot of load on the modified swing arm. I have heard of a few that actually deformed due to the torque load. Just what I have heard and the 600 has only ran at Bonneville where there was no load. ... Terry

PS Great Job the bike looks sharp. ... TP

I’m not too worried about engine torque now but am concerned about brake torque. I have plans to install a swingarm brace so this won’t be a problem. I also have been looking into modifying a FZ1 or FZ6 swingarm to help reduce unsprung weight. There also designed to handle 100+ H.P..

The new Progressive shock has arrived. Even though it is larger in size it's noticeably lighter.

The added ride height in the rear is a good mach for the Yamaha YZF R1 forks.

But it's not perfect, it’s like a chain reaction, I change one thing and many other things must be changed also.

With the swingarm straight the chain is tight. But when it’s down there is way too much slack. This were I plan to put an idler pulley.

Things left to do: rear brakes, lengthen kick stand, front turn signals, mirrors and idler pulley.

17 - Looks great!

Here's Ralphs latest ride report with the stock 919 unit....

Today was a day of riding and shock tuning for me. The weather was
pretty nice, so off I went...and test rode some rough roads with my
honda 919 shock. And ya know what- it hurts ! Also, the fact the rear
end is really raised too high, which also compresses the front forks
more than it did before- in normal riding...and they really dive when
braking hard, plus the drive belt is a bit too lose. So these are my
Major complaints about the 919 shock conversion....but there is a
happy ending to this story. I mentioned before, I still had a few
tricks up my sleeve, but I wanted a thorough test under all
conditions before I attempted to make further mods. But after my
ride today, something needed to be done ASAP ! And here is what I
did....

I needed to remove the shock again for this mod, which isn't that
hard to do- although the external reservior does make shock removal
and installation just a bit more troublesome than the normal shock.
After the shock was removed, what I wanted to do was remove even MORE
preload from the spring ! But the preload collar is already set on
the lowest of seven notches....but my thought was- why not try and
machine out that lowest notch even FURTHER ! Which is EXACTLY what I
did ! I didn't know exactly what the end result would be like... but
I just Had to do it. So I machined out (on my Drill press)the notch
about another 1/4" Deeper...about as deep as I thought was safe...but
I did think- this was a oneway road...as once the preload was dropped
into this really deep notch- it Wouldn't come back out very easily-
if at all ! Well, I did it- and rotated the preload/cam collar- and
THUNK it went- into the deep crevice. Now let me mention- that this
NEW setting is just about "ZERO" spring preload now...I say that
because, with a firm grip- I can can now rotate the spring around the
shock... So that pretty much says Zero preload to me !

Now time to re-install the shock...which I'm getting pretty good at
by now ; ) I first measure the static ride height, which is still
high, but maybe it sagged about 1/4". I figured as much, so that
came as no surprise. Now I hop on the bike with my fat arse, and
again take a new measurement of the "Laden" ride height. WOW!...it
dropped another 3/4" from the previously measured "Laden" ride
height ! Excellant ! That is Exactly what I was hoping for. The
reduction in "Laden" ride height also brought the swingarm back to
less of an angle, and in doing so- tightened up about 50% of the
excess belt slack that I have been sooo worried about... it's still a
tad loose btw. Anyway...I can't wait any longer...I quickly re-apply
my riding gear and push the bike out of my basement shop- into the
garage and out the door. I fire her up- let it warm about 2 minutes,
drop it into gear...and off I go :-) I immediately feel the one inch
reduction of rear suspension ride height, it no longer feels "Jacked"
up... but it still is raised about 1-1/2" over stock rear ride
height. I ride for 30 miles, I really put my Blast through it's
paces, hard bumps= much nicer, hard braking= much less front end
dive, I look at the drive belt while riding = alot less flapping-
Excellant ! I ride home, and put the Blast back to bed.... It is now
almost Perfect ! (at least for me)...but I still DO NOT Recommend
the swap of a Honda 919 shock to a Blast.... unless you know what
you're in for... you need to be a heavyweight dude, and you need to
make aLL the modifications to the shock as I did...and even then-
riding with increased rear ride height does affect the bike- not
exactly in a negative way- but it does change the handling of the
bike...which I'm already used to. After this last mod and test ride,
I'd say my Blast now rides almost exactly like a Buell XB9/12S
Lightning. It's higher feeling than a standard Blast(don't forget my
taller front tire too), and it snaps into turns faster because of the
height...but it's completely stable at speed...and the rear
suspension is a bit more firm than the stock Blast. All in all, it's
exactly the way I wanted it to turn out..... I'm now VERY happy with
the end Result :-)

~Ralph

17blast,
Is that a 520 chain you're using?
How did you calculate what size sprockets to use to get stock gearing?

Yes it is a 520 chain. I’m not sure if I can explain it correctly for you but I will try. Figure your drive ratio by dividing your rear sprocket by your front. Then take that and multiply it by the circumference on the rear tire. This will give you inches of travel per revolution of the output shaft. I purchased the smallest front sprocket available and already had the 180/55ZR17 tire. With those numbers in hand I calculated what the rear sprocket needed to be and ordered it. It was a special order from Vortec and took 2 months.

17-
I'm working on drawing some stuff up to Do 17" whell conversions for the Blast racers at WSMC. Do you have any drawings of the axle mounts that you machined that you be willing to share? Any more details of the Axle adjusters?

Bill00,

I assume that you want to keep the same gearing as the stocker. Assuming that you are going to use a 23 tooth sprocket from American Sport Bike, and that the rear tire has a diameter close to 26", you want a 73-75 Tooth rear sprocket. Which is huge, and maybe tough to find.

If you go to Renthal, they make a 16 Tooth front which will get you in the more reasonable range of 50-52 Teeth on the rear.

You know a rub block, cut the swing arm tabs, paint job - either fender or body, and a chain oiler and your good to go! What do you figure your wheel base, rake and trail to be? Great job!
