just cracked 1500 miles on my 2002 blast and it's still cutting out on me as i drive down the freeway. it acts like it's starving for gas and when it slows to about 60 to 65 it kicks back in. scares the crap out of me. the dealership dynoed it and rode it on the street and i think a short freeway distance and said nothing was wrong. any ideas?

Rob - Just a guess (hasn't happened to me) but that sounds like a gas tank breathing problem.. Have you tried opening the tank up on the road?

If its a Cali model then the smog canister is probably full of gas and water, or what Dasherman said if not - then check lines. Blasting on the dark side!EZ

Gas cap broke today. The bolt that holds the black piece inside the tank and moves it to lock the cap striped out and got the damn thing stuck inside the tank. Took 1 hour to finally get the gas cap off. Anyone else have problems with the gas cap breaking?

So far I have had a bolt come loose and fall off the bike on the airbox and another one under the seat that holds the rear lights bracket. The euro flash button has stopped working and now the gas cap. The bike has 2800 miles on it.

I have also notice the other day that my 2000 has a different powder coat paint on the frame than the never ones. Mine sees to be wear off and I see that the newer ones do not..

No do not change them if you are not changing out the exhaust, doing head work or anything like that. Leave them alone. If you live at a higher elevation around 4,000 feet and above then I would think about changing out the jets for better preformance..

So I am down at the dealer and trying to buy parts for the gas cap. No luck have to buy everything as one unit. Figures. Can I get one gas cap please.. The price 44.00 for the one that fits the Blast and 38.00 for the ones that have keys to them and work on all other models. Nice BUELL I thought that the Blast was supposed to be cheaper to own and buy parts. It looks like it is not..

Nice....

RD350 - I assume the other models won't fit the blast?

On a happier note, I should be able to re-jet my bike tomorrow. I called my dealer and they said buying single jets was no problem. Now if only this rain keeps up through tomorrow...

Note: For those of you wondering why I want it to rain: I'm a house painter, and when it rains, I can't paint. So I get the day off. So I can play with my bike. Wheee!

Rd350, The stock jets in the Blast are set up from the factory so the bike will run more on the lean side. They do this to keep the air nazis in the EPA happy. I changed my jets out to the 45/170 and it runs better now. The bike warms up faster, off the line hesitation is gone, I hit the revlimiter all the time now, and the bike is stock.
On the subject of other things, my bike has been at the dealership since last Thursday getting a few problems check out. I pointed out to them how the belt was hanging off the rear sprocket. I told them it was the recall sprocket. They said that this would be the first thing they checked out. My battery was dead by time I got there also. I guess running 85mph for 50 mile's non stop goes to show my charging system is shot.

Spooky,
wondering if the sprocket is mis-aligned?
Blasterd - bars shipped this morning. Sorry about the delay. Couldn't remember where I stored the mounting hardware for the stock bars when I moved - The new owner insisted on having handlebars on the bike. Imagine that

And in a print shop down in E.T. an order is placed for addendum/correction insert sheets with instructions to insert them in front of page 35 of your parts manual.

Hey...actually... the fact of the matter is, under the best circumstances, with the entire development team proofing the draft, that many glitches slip past. TechPubs does a fabulous job, particularly in view of the fact that they generally get the time frame in which to do their work compressed more than any function in the development process.

Buell did a SPECTACULAR job and a manual with a couple errors NOW...is FAR BETTER than a perfect manual a year after the bike is released. My compliments to the team are sincere and tainted with a bit of envy....I wish I could do as well as they have.

I have a habit of sitting down and reading EVERY manual like the Sunday paper.

I still laugh, before I bought my first Sportster, I read the manual and found 7 ooops.

The key is . . . when you read these things, don't shut down your thinker.

Hey....wanna take a guess at how many battery cables and XB9R has? I thought I'd stumbled on another....but I think I understand, it's a bonding thing.

RD,
Quit yer bellyaching! We don't want Buell to raise the price of the other gas caps! :) Reasonable prices, seems to me.

Pardon my ignorance, but is the venturi ring in the aribox that trumpet shaped port?

Ok, I had nothing to do at work today so I opened up my airbox and took the filter out. After looking at that, and the dictionary.com definition of "venturi" I've figured it out.

Now my question for Subaru is how did you cut it off. I poked at it with my knife (pretty sharp) but couldn't make much headway.

Dan,

Here is what I did. I cut the ring off with a hacksaw. Then I took a 2" hole cutter. (The ones they use for cutting round holes in a door for a lock that have a drill bit in the middle.) I put the 2" hole cutter on a drill and cut from the inside of the airbox out. I used the outer ring on the inside of the airbox to guide the bit. It took three cuts on different angles to get most of everything out. Then I took a round file worked out the rest. I finished off by using a sanding paper medium grit. It took all of 15 to 20 minutes to do all the work...

I have one question for those who have piped/jetted and modified their air boxes. How bad does fuel mileage take a hit? Have you noticed a significant decrease?

Opps thats two questions...Sorry.

Rd350 - That sounds like it will work a lot better than poking at it with my knife .

Jonnyz - With a pipe (unjetted, I'm gonna do it this weekend though!!) and no airbox mod I get a little over 60 mpg.
