Ceedub- Glad to hear you're gonna ok. Take care of that break. My cousin had a bad crash a couple of years ago. His tib & fib were poking way out of his leg. The doctors were STUNNED at his rapid recovery. It was probably due to the ridiculously good shape he was in and the fact that he didn't baby it. Blood flow is apparently a good thing. -Saro | ||

More info. The insurance agent said the frame had been bent and a chunk broken off. They are totaling the Buell Blast with 1605 miles on it. What a shame. And to make our day even more complete, my wifes car was parked next to the Blast and the groundskeeper crew threw a rock through her rear window. While the claims adjuster was still here. What a weird day. I feel like the character on Lil Abner tat always had a rain cloud over his head.  | ||

Glad to hear your ok though - yeah stuff like that really screws with your day, but it looks like you'll end up with a new bike, let me and others know if you want to sell your salvaged bike - a lot of us are doing Blast projects and looking for donors - lol - the bright side! - new bike time! They gave me $3800 for mine (2 yrs old) but I kept it and got $2900. It would have cost me another $2500 on top of the $3800 to have 'my bike' back. Keeping it as a salvage, kept me in the black. You can keep your bike if you want to & part it out or rebuild it (new frame $400). There of course might be someone here who would be willing to give you money for it (IE whatever it costs you to keep it or better). My insurance wanted a dealer estimate done, which meant I got a more accurate detailing (for free) of what it actually needed rather than a guestimate by an adjuster. Sure am glad you're 'okay' though. | ||

My 8K mile Blast relationship just ended on Thursday... on 101 in Sonoma County, traffic was stopped and I got rear ended by the proverbial fat chick in a minivan yabbing on the cell phone (not lane splitting because it was a 3 lanes onto 2 lanes section) I got catapulted off the bike and smashed (flying upside down and backwards) into the truck ahead of me but thanx to good gear and dumb luck I walked away with nothing worse than a piece of 2" irrigation pipe driven an inch into the back of my thigh I think the bike is a different story though. The tubular rear subframe under the pillion is bent, the unit-body subframe it attaches to is also bent under where the battery fits (looks like the rear wheel got pushed up into it) taillight gone, both rear signals gone, the seat is messed up. swingarm still looks OK, rear wheel looks OK in the middle of the bike both sides foot peg brackets are bent, left side footpeg and shift lever torn off Up front my cafe fairing gone, headlight and mounting bracket, instrument cluster and bracket, turn signals all gone. Mirrors busted, levers busted... fork tubes may or may not be OK... also it looks like the front engine mount got deflected far enough that it gouged the engine block but is now back in position. front wheel looks OK Bike is a 2004 with 8K miles, new last Aug 1. Is this enough damage that insurance will total it? | ||

Yes, its totaled. If the repair is at least half the value of the bike, its totaled. And your bike is in far worse shape than mine was when it was totaled. Glad you're 'okay'. If you were planning on major modifications keep the bike and put the ins. money towards it. I cant believe you dont have any back or neck injuries. Do you have a lawyer? You may or may not need one, but 9 months down the road is not the time decide on that. Mine did a whole lot more for me than I would have thought of and since I had no memory of the accident, they (the lawyer & girl that hit me)actually tried to put me at fault!! | ||

Erik beat me to it. It's totaled. From what you're telling us I would say yes, Erik would probably be a good judge though. Some Guesses The frame is damaged, $400 Rear Bodywork, ~100 Rear Frame ~100 Y brackets ~150/pair Turn Signals ~20 Seat $100 Mirrors ~40 Levers ~30 Headlight, brackets and flyscreen ~200 Prolly over $1000 in parts, $1000 in labor, and a scratched engine blocd, or a damaged head would definitely push it over the edge. I would total loss it if you have to replace both the engine and the frame. Just me guessing though, James (Message edited by jprovo on August 01, 2005) | ||

At least mine was only a close call. This morning I was comming back from the post office and a guy in a pick up ran a stop sign. He was yapping away on the old cell phone and noticed me almost to late. Traffic was comming the other way so I had almost no where to go. Fortuneately he slammed the brakes on and slid sideways to a stop. Still dont know if it was me or the other traffic that caused him to stop. At least no hit and no errors and the bike still runs. | ||

Erik, What can I say? Riding gear.... buy it, wear it. I came through it hurting not much worse than I felt every Saturday playing rugby for 20 years! First Gear mesh jacket (with CE armor in shoulders, elbows and back) really absorbed a huge amount of impact when I smashed into the truck and full helmet certainly saved me from smashing the back of my head/neck. When I hit the ground I landed with my entire 220 lbs on my right shoulder and the armor took all of that, I don't even have a bruise. Since I re-started riding I've never once been on a bike w/o jacket, boots, gloves and full helmet... now that I've had the crap scared out of me I'm going to add armored pants and spine protector to the "must have" list. For the bike, I'll see if the insurance company will total it. If anyone is interested I'll post what happens in case anybody wants to pick up the remains for a project bike. The Blast was already paid for so I'll use the insurance to pay off my Multistrada 620 | ||

Yes, I think everybody here in Nor/So Cal is interested in what happens. You'll have to let us know before the ins co takes the bike, otherwise we'll never see it. As far as your safety gear, it would have prevented only some of my injuries, yet I see others at the opposite end (of the safety spectrum) wearing a full face with shorts,no socks and sneakers (or worse). Wearing at least a pair of jeans would save them thousands in hospital costs (I know-it was the rare day that I wasn't wearing full leather and the denim saved a lot of skin). Again, glad and amazed you're okay. | ||

James, Another Buell? Yes, maybe a Ulysses or a good used XB9S Erik, I'll let you know... the engine and tranny were solid, wheels OK, new (less than 20 miles) Chen Shin tires and I doubt the main frame is damaged so it might be a good hulk to build a track bike from | ||

I finally heard back from V&H after a little more than two weeks, here is what they had to say. "Since the it tore through the dog bone nut plate was most likely installed upside down, and that would cause it to rip through. If you installed it at a dealer, then you would have to go back to the dealer and see if they can do anything as far as a warranty for you. Sorry that we couldn't help." What the? My reply was, If it does sound like the dog bone plate was installed upside down then it must have been assembled that way at the factory, Thus the error was at your end and not at the dealer. I did not use a dealer, I bought and installed the exhaust myself per V&H directions. | ||

Got my second *&c#ed up exhaust from buell today. The header outlets that go into the mufflers are completely screwed up. The right outlet extends a good half inch longer than the left one, and is also canted at a screwed up angle. I was upset the first time, now I'm just pissed. What are the odds that I would get TWO crappy exhausts? This is definitely a problem with buell, I'll be giving them a call tomorrow. | ||

Geez, you'd think they would go out of their way to make sure that they gave you an inspected and perfect example since you had already had a bad one. I know Buell out-sources the production of that pipe to "Hooker Headers". At least I'm pretty sure about that. Maybe the Pro-Series is going down in quality in general as Hooker doesn't really consider it a big priority or money maker. I can just imagine a hung-over, baked-up, straggley haired highschool dropout wearing a flannel shirt doing the welds in some dimly lit factory somewhere with no supervision while he stares at the azz of the hot chick working on the mustang header production line across the plant. | ||

When I got mine it was packed in foam and plastic wraped. No dents, dings, or bad welds and went together like a glove to a hand. even the rear brackets werent that bad. Sorry to hear about your problems. maybe the out source got behind and slapped a few together to keep buell happy. Maybe Buell needs to unpack and inspect the goods. Or ask the assembler to sign their work. | ||

I need a rear wheel. The bearing is loose in the hub again and I'm done pouring loctite in it. Just got in from a little trip through the Upper Pennisula. US 2 was loaded with cops watching for speeders. I rode the Big Kids Yellow Blast the whole trip and he rode the Sporty. | ||

Just got my SW-Motec 30mm risers installed with my Laverda 4-way adjustable bars. I did have to run to the hardware store and spend $3 to get SAE threaded bolts to replace the ones that came with the risers, but other than that, everything went perfect. I left my controls all mounted in the same positions and angles, and just slipped the risers underneath the bar and tightened down the clamps and was good to ride. I can turn full lock again, and the riding position is much improved. The bars were just a smidge too low before. They are now roughly the same height as superbike bars, but they angle down like clubmans a little bit. My wrists are almost 100% neutral when I grip the bar. The steering felt quicker too, but I suspect that was only because I was leaning forward less and putting less weight on the bar. The Manic Salamander bar-ends are back ordered till next week, so I'll wait for the pictures until then. | ||
