Well my wife wanted to do her own oil change on her Blast so I walked her through all the steps yesterday and we got her oil and filter changed. I wanted to take the bike for a quick run to get the engine up to temp and then check the oil again. Well while pulling out of my driveway I forgot the side stand down and it scraped the entire length of the driveway then came up at the last second before my left hand turn. I checked when I got home and there is a switch on the sidestand. Shouldn't the bike stall when I put it in first with the stand down? I have no blown fuses anywhere. Also the bike starts in gear also with the clutch pulled in. I didnt' think it was supposed to do this either.

Someone - read previous owner - probably overroad all the safety switches/sensors - that can be good or bad - in your case - not so good - to fix the clutch sensor see the TKV Procedures section - just check the wiring for the side stand switch - but I'd leave that alone and just remember to put up my stand - welcome!

I'll probably leave it alone. I noticed on a Katana I used to have it was a pain because the bike would stall over some heavy bumps. I had to bypass the switch for the sidestand.

The bike will not kill if you put it in gear with the stand down, it will only kill if the clutch is released.

So, if you were coasting down your driveway with the clutch it, it was behaving normally. If you were driving under power - then the switch has been bypassed.

Okay so there are two switches? One for starting it in gear and the other for the stand? If they are separate I'd like to put the stand one back to the way it should be. Can anyone help? I've check the switch and nothing seems to be tampered with. No breaks in the wiring anywhere.

There is an online manual - you can reference both there, also there is in the specifics section of the TKV a file showing how to bypass the clutch safety switch - try reversing that procedure. Some people either put foil in the stand switch or connect the wires together or I guess you could permanently open the switch with a little electrical solder also.

Prozac235 - You should be able to start the bike even if it is in gear - as long as the clutch is in. This is also normal.

There are three switches.

There is a switch on the clutch lever that determins if the clutch is engaged, or disengaged.

There is a switch on the sidestand to tell if it is up or down.

There is a switch in the gear box to see if it is in neutral or not.

Of your 3 switches, I would say that only the sidestand switch has been tampered with or defeated.


SO --- Clutch out, In nutreal, sidestand down, it will run. Clutch in, In Gear, sidestand down, it will run. Clutch out, In gear sidestand down, it (should) kill.

It will start only if the clutch is in, regardless of whether or not you are in neutral.

The sidestand switch is easy to check, I (accidentally) check mine about half the time when I fill up the tank, lol...
The way that goes is, I start it up, forget to kick the stand up, put it into first, and it dies as soon as the clutch is about to engage, before any power actually goes to the rear wheel. It won't hurt the bike in any way (at least doing it about once a month hasn't hurt mine in 2 years and almost 14,000 miles.) So, check it to be sure it's been messed with before doing any serious work. Like Naustin said, if you had your clutch in going down the driveway, it was behaving normally.
Oh, also, if it has been tampered with, it was probably because it was going bad. So, if you "fix it", be prepared to possibly have to replace the switch, if it doesn't work properly. Just FYI...
