I heard it made your pecker bi...I mean it made you more of a man. Don't all big bore engine jobs do that?

Hey, I've got a question for all you old timers. Where do you prefer to have your rear-view mirrors mounted, handlebars or fairing and why?

Another thing I've questioned is: Why don't manufacturers combine the directional indicator lights into the rear view mirrors on fairing mounted designs. Why have two stalks out there causing drag?

Buellzilla,
The Blast doesn't come with a fairing. But my S2 is the first bike I've had with a fairing, so as far as preferences I haven't really formed an ultimate decision yet. With the mirrors mounted on the handlebars you can turn the bars while stopped in traffic to check out something behind and off to the side of you. I do kind of like the headlight turning with the forks though over the fairing mounted headlight.

The turn signal in the mirror trick has only just started hitting the dealership accessory departments in the last couple of years, but I like the idea.

MikeJ (I did have a Honda 750 once though, but only got it via a 3-way horse trade and only rode it for about 75 miles to the 3rd party's house. I think it had a fairing, but can't remember for certain and wasn't paying much attention. :))

Xgecko,

You tell that little lady to have a great time, but be careful. Been working on my wife so that when I get my XB the Blast won't feel left out.

Buellzilla,

OLDTIMER what the ##^&$!! do you mean :) I prefer the bar end mirrirs that I installed because I get to see more of what is behind me than looking at me. If you look at my profile you'll know what I mean. :) I haven't looked seriously at mirror/turn signal combos, but I have seriously thought about smaller profile turn signals to mount on my cafe style fairing like Xgecko. This is more for looks though as what little wind drag the stock units create is magnified by my girth. :)

Dreams of larger displacement,

Did some math tonight and was a bit depressed afterwords. To get the 100cc increase that I would like it looks like I would have to increase the stroke along with the bore :(. The largest that I think you could go with the bore would give you about 550cc (would require a custom cylinder and piston and boring the crankcase. To get much more would require lengthening the stroke and most likely cubic dollars.

Ray, I was actually trying to refer to people with alot of motorcycling experience on a number of different bikes. I was sort of expecting a comment like Mike J's. I also find that I often turn my handle bars in order to get a better view behind when stopped at intersections. To me it seems that the most practical and functional mounting method is on the handlebars, but I didn't know if someone with experience with both types might provide some good reason why a fairing mount might be advantageous (less vibration?).

The Nallin folks expect to boost HP to 50 at the rear wheel with only a 23cc displacement increase. I haven't seen any dyno charts showing a Blast breaking 30 HP stock have you? How much power were you hoping to make?

I'm home from Japan and my bike is now safely back under my protection.

Not interested in playing with the stroke that leads to too many other problems.

Spooky, don't look at Zipper's web site, While it is good there isn't a whole lot there for the Bueller. Write them. They were very informative when I talked to them last spring. From what I gathered they were still in the prototype stage in May. I'll be in that area in March so I plan on stopping in to see what they have.

Buellzilla,

That's me 35 years plus started riding around 4 or 5. Ridden about every type of bike from large to small. My favorite bike was the H-D Sprint which started my love for singles. My Comments on mirrors relates to bar-ends compared to the stock mouse ears. I did ride one bike with a frame mounted fairing and fixed mirrors didn't like it because of the same reason you mentioned couldn't do those stoplight look arounds. :)

As to those displacement post I have no idea what HP my figures would produce have to leave that to Aaron or Blake for the math. Just dreaming of the possibilities. I have no intentions at this time of changing anything internal on the motor as I am very satisfied with the performance I have now with the mods that I have made. I do know that it's got more ponies than when it was stock though.

Xgecko,

I agree about the changing of the stroke to many cubic dollars and to much R&D with unknown results. Although the thought does intrigue me somewhat as many of the singles I have ridden in the past had a longer stroke and I liked the performance of them. If we don't dream alittle what fun would life be :) If I have to tear down the top end anytime though the Nallin or simular setup will have some serious contemplation.

The reason for going with the telescoping pushrod covers, is a good one. With the stock Blast set up anytime you want to change cams you have to pull the cylinder head off, which means you have to drop the motor. With the Zipper kit you would use ajustable pushrods. So now all you would have to do is collapse the covers and make a few turns on the lock nut on the pushrods, pull them out of the way along with the lifters, so on so forth. I'll put it this way it's better than having to drop the motor.

You don't have to pull the head to change cams, although pulling the the rocker box may be useful. You may have to lower the motor to get the rocker cover out of there. 'Course, it's only 2 bolts and a floor jack, takes seconds. You can do a little preventative maintenance and put the new steel rocker box gasket in at the same time.

Can you get collapsible pushrod covers for a Blast? It's different than a Sporty, y'know, the Blast has a single big plastic cover for both pushrods.

I've seen a lot of leaks from 2 piece collapsible pushrod covers on XL motors. Not to say they all do, but sometimes it seems that way.

Great I haven't had my K&N filter two months and ASB is announcing that they will be selling a Blast intake....well if it looks good (and provides knee clearence) I'll have a barely used filter for sale. Got some extra Per Dium money to spend on the Blast

Joey, those are *special* bolts. Don't use anything other than what the factory sells. And follow the post-recall procedure (B-018 if memory serves).

learned a valuable lesson today on my way home. I usually do a cursory walk around before I fire up the old turtle today I was notified by the wife that I had a package waiting (new headlight...more on that later) so I rushed and headed home. About a mile from home still on the freeway the Blast just stops firing. Not like out of gas sputtering just not juice> I'm thinking all kinds of things as I pull over into the left shoulder. What do I see as the first out of place thing???? my nice new purple sparkplug wire dangling from the Plug. It had come unpluged from the coil. hence the no juice. good thing i wear racing gloves cause the engine is hot. even through gloves.
On the subject of lights I picked up a 7" H4 lens/light kit while I was in Japan it was 3700yen...do the math (124 to the dollar) and mailed it to myself ($3.95 on base). Anyway it is quite nice...not so easy to change (I have a fairing) so I won't be changing the bulb to a bluewhite anytime soon but the bulb in it has no yellow so I don't really care. The brightness is better than stock (at least to my eye)... I now have a broader choice of light color (when I choose to). So if anyone wants/needs a stock Blast/M2 headlamp bulb I have one...cheap

My 02 Blast has about 900 mile on it. Can anyone tell me which bolts should be check by torque wrench at this time. I know some might suggest all of them but which critical one's and are they easy to get to. Mainly interested in engine bolts.

Thanks

Bigguns-

My answer to your fastener torque question goes like this:

Any bolt that was last touched by a non-you. As far as the bolts you may have monkeyed with that's entirely up to you...

If you love your Blast, get a shop manual from the dealer. $59 well spent dollars. If you don't love your Blast, go test ride the M2 low. Now, who would like to purchase a second hand 2001 shop manual? Or trade for an '02 M2 manual?

Bigguns-
Probably the bolts that would be most beneficial to torque check are the ones that secure the rockerbox to the head, since these are frequently torqued wrongly at the factory or fall out of spec during first few thousand miles of use. These bolts aren't easy to get to. The engine needs to be lowered and the rockerbox cover removed. It is a very familiar problem for '00 & '01 Blast owners that the Rbox gaskets fail and oil starts spurting out onto the exhaust, but it may be that Buell fixed this problem with '02 models by using a better gasket or using better QC at the factory during assembly.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about checking the torque since the User or Service manual doesn't prescribe it. You may cause more trouble than prevent.

I have heard of a significant number of Blasters having their carbs pop out of the rubber coupler which connects the carb to the intake, so check the tightness of the band clamps. Also check the bracket that secures the airbox to the engine (3 bolts, left side of bike). The 2 Bolts which thread into the box should have 222 threadlocker and tightened to 3-5 ft-lbs.

Well, I'm no expert, but there's my 2 cents.

Buellzilla, I appreciate the info and maybe I will treat the machine with the respect it deserves. After all I don't go and torque all the bolts on my flht thinking this machine was built by idiots. I re-jetted the carb and learned the hard way the way the carb can slide out of the rubber coupler if you don't secure the bands to proper tightness (my error). This machine now runs strong with the Vance and Hines exhaust, re-jetting and air cleaner. This is one of 3 bikes in my stable and I love it equal with the others. As a matter of fact its the one that takes me to work each day. the others are: 2001 flht, 2000 sportster custom and the 2002 grape juice. No rice in this garage!

Augh! My (expletive deleted) Rocker Box Gasket is leaking again!!! cleaning the bike today, and sure enough, oil dripping down the front of the head. 400 miles since the stealership changed it. All bets are off, I'm doing it myself this time, warranty or not.
Me to dealer: since you're doing it under warranty, why don't you let me buy the James kit, and you can put that on?
Dealer: Nope, we have the regular kit in stock, and we never have a problem if they're put on right.
Me: uh, okay
10 days later, after they had to (yep, you guessed it) Order the Freakin' Parts!!!! I get my bike back, and 400 miles later they're leaking. I guess they didn't put it on right?

OK I guess I'm lucky when I had the Rockerbox gasket problem I mad an appointment for 10 days away while they ordered the parts. And added oil as it needed it while I cleaned my bike daily (also needed). Yes it was a hassle but less than if I had to take the Bus. That said it's been well over 8000 miles since then. I figure if/when I do the Nallin upgrade I'll change it to a James. Then again I don't let the dealer do anything that I know I can do. Saves me money and them the time looking at my face while I wait for my bike. My Next step is to change a Front Brake rotor...After I change out the PowerSteering pump on a 90 Lexus (don't ask where it is I'm already crying)

PhillyBlast;
Even if you do the job yourself this time, I'd still take it to the dealer and show them the leak and ask them about the "we never have a problem if they're put in right" crap. Ask them how many times it usually takes for them to put them in right.

Blake, Are the new metallic factory gaskets being used as original equipment on the '02 Blasts?

I dunno. I'd guess that since they just hit the parts counter, that they are probably hitting the bikes mid year. Maybe someone else knows the facts on this? It would be nice to know.

Blake,
the metallic gasket fix came out about a week after I got the bike back. If I'd only known . . .
Tony,
Boy, you really know how to make a guy feel good - I made the appt. 2 weeks in advance, and they *still* had to order the parts. I could have ridden the bike to Hawaii (okay, the water part would have been tricky - wonder how much air pressure I'd need in the tires for that?) and had your dealership fix it in the time they took. On the other hand, I have a built in excuse for my wife when I put the Nallin Kit on it this winter - but honey, I had to change the gaskets, it was leaking oil :-)
