New interview with Canepa (google translation of Italian):

https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=it&tl=en &js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Ftopdri versblog.blogspot.com%2F2015%2F04%2Fsbk-intervista -niccolo-canepa-adesso.html&edit-text=

A few highlights: According to Nic, there were problems in Australia and especially Thailand with overheating due to a defective part, which has since been replaced. Engine needs more power, but not much can be done this year under the rules. OTOH, he thinks reliability can be improved significantly.

""A few highlights: According to Nic, there were problems in Australia and especially Thailand with overheating due to a defective part, which has since been replaced.""

There were overheating problems for EBR both in Australia and Thailand .. And beeing too far away from the workshop/garage there was nothing to be done but to wait for the engine to "fail"

Does this mean that EBR will use bigger radiators from now on ?? And the team could do nothing until they returned to Europe and their workshop to actually order them and get them fitted ??

Maybe it was a defective water (or coolant) pump.

Only 4 laps, and second page says he crashed... It says rider is OK, but it also says he went to the medical center.

Hope he is OK, and they don't run out of bikes.

^ Apparently all is OK; Canepa finished FP2 although Larry apparently went off in the gravel in both FP's. I'm guessing Larry's having a tough time learning the track.

Despite knocking 1.7+ seconds off his lap time, and reducing the gap to first by almost 1 second, Nic dropped to 16th in FP2. Still, that's much better than last year and hopefully good enough to make Superpole.

No matter how mature and experienced and aware of the limitations of age you may be, it's hard to get smoked by a young guy. I'd have been in the gravel too. : )

Pegram is really having a hard time at this track based on the limited available data. Canepa's not exactly inspiring a bunch of confidence either but I hope he's not hurt. Isn't this supposed to be a track where the EBR shines?

^ Canepa implied the track is much better for the EBR than Thailand, but not as good as some later tracks will be. I'm guessing the straights are long enough where EBR's horsepower deficit shows.

Team Hero/EBR update from Facebook:

quote:

Canepa Moves On At Pace For Team Hero EBR

The Motorland Aragon circuit in Spain provides the venue for the latest round of the FIM Superbike World Championship and after the first day of action Team Hero EBR riders Niccolò Canepa and Larry Pegram placed 16th and 23rd respectively.

Canepa had to overcome the effects of a fast crash in the first of two sessions on the opening day, making improvements in the afternoon practice period to end up inside the top 16. He reduced his best lap time to 1’53.752 in the second session, at a circuit he knows well.

The 5.077km Motorland circuit near the town of Alcaniz in north east Spain is fast and technical and for a first-time visitor like Pegram it was not a simple layout to learn, especially as he lost track time at some stages today. Larry posted a best lap time of 1’57.907, which he feels he can improve on greatly on the second day of practice.

Consistently dry and sunny weather conditions helped the whole field to try and find their ideal set-up at what is a new-style Motorland Aragon layout for this year. The previous tight final hairpin has been replaced with a longer left-hand curve, making the circuit shorter than the previous version.

Larry Pegram
“It was a good day for the team because I think Nick did really well but a bad day for me. I just had a bunch of little things that meant I did not get all my track time and that does not bode well when you do not know the circuit. In the second session I got some laps in and it felt a lot better but I just never got a chance to go out and go fast. Tomorrow morning we will have everything ready and I know there is something left there as I do not know the track completely yet. Nick always wants to go faster but I am really impressed how fast he is going right now. He looks really good and that is positive for the team, so for me personally I just hope to get in the laps tomorrow. There are a lot of blind corners here but we will get it by the end, as long as we get a little more track time.

Niccolò Canepa
“I am pretty satisfied about today because although I had a really big crash in the morning, at the chicane before the back straight, I was lucky I was not injured. I was not so comfortable this afternoon riding the bike but lap-by-lap my feeling got better and I found a stronger pace, setting a couple of good laps. We are not to far from the top ten and the most important thing is that we are still working. I also expect to feel better tomorrow because today my back and shoulders hurt a lot after the crash. It was difficult to make a lot of laps but it was OK and I am happy with what we did today.

""Isn't this supposed to be a track where the EBR shines? ""

It looks much better than Thailand....

In Aragon so far, Canepa is faster than MV Agusta, and Camier is a superfast rider... Also Canepa is within 1sec from the CBR of Guintoli, who is last year's WSBK champio......That is big improovement

But what is more to be expected when you are -15km/h slower at this level ??? Also we do not know who has used the Qualifying tire and who has not.... It could be much better tommorrow...Lets wait, it looks promising ....

Personally , I am hoping that EBR's overheating problems are fixed , and both riders finish both races ! The team and riders need a solid result to start building their confidence ... Another DNFs would be a major step back at this point ...

it is when both riders crash on good handling bikes that I am concerned, I am not worried about the pace. there is a saying in drag racing: any light beats a red light IE any finish beats a disqualify

FP 3, Canepa 16th and Pegram 22nd.

FP 4, Canepa 16th and Pegram 21st.

Hopefully that's good enough to make Superpole.

Reformatted from 46champ's post from March 26th:

"I will give a try at explaining WSB qualifying.

The first 3 sessions of timed practice sets the field for super pole.

The #1 thru #10 qualifiers go directly to Super Pole 2.

Super Pole 1 is made up of qualifiers #11 thru #20.

Qualifiers #21 and above start each race in the order they qualified at the end of practice session 3.

The results of Super Pole 1 dictates the start positions #11 thru #20 except riders in positions #11 and #12 get to ride in Super Pole #2.

The results of Super Pole 2 is what is used to grid the field for positions #1 thru #12.

Practice session 4 only counts for practice and has no bearing on qualifying or grid placement."

Seems like a pretty comprehensive and easy to comprehend description to me...

Both races are in the books:
