I'm finally getting around to installing '07 fork springs in my '06 Ulysses.

I've searched BadWeb and found two numbers; 172mm & 192mm , which is correct for the nominal setting?

Well at least you acknowledged my question.

I see two mentions of 172mm, so I'll go with that.
It's probably easier to add fluid than to remove it...

Thanks.

Sorry, just saw the question.

According to my 2007 shop manual, it's 192 mm. That's prior to putting the spring in the fork.

Hence the dilemma.
I've seen both specs mentioned.

In one thread "Anonymous" posted it was 172. "Anonymous" is supposed to be a Buell elf if not Erik himself...
In another thread 192 was specified, as you quote from the service manual...

I wanted to know which is right?

Sorry, I just changed the fork oil in my 08 XT but my bike has different forks than yours.

My 08 XB Service Manual shows 114mm for the X and 119 for the XT. Both of these are way off from the numbers you are claiming so I can only assume the forks are completely different between 07 and 08.

I had the same doubts, but went with the 192mm as per the manual, thinking the 172mm in the anonymous post was a 7/9 typo?

Bike is riding fine, although I haven't tried with 172mm level to feel the difference. It would definitely be softer I think, and I don't want mine any softer than now, so...

Wouldn't 172mm be stiffer than 192, since the measurement is the air space left from the top of the fork?
The air will compress, the oil won't, so more air space=softer.
I believe I used the 172mm number when I installed '07 springs on my '06, but would have to check my records at home to be sure.
Mine is certainly not too stiff, and I am no heavyweight (175 lbs). I even run about 2 lines more preload up front than the recommended settings in my manual to lessen some fork dive.

I don't remember where I got the info (changed to the '07 springs LONG ago) but my Motion Pro fork oil adjuster is set to 175mm from the top. From my notes:

* 2007 spring spec: 172mm (+/- 8mm).
* 10oz initial, pump damper. Add 6oz.
* 15oz total yields 175mm measurement from top.

My manual in front of me states 113mm from the top for the '06 spec. Hope that helps.

Absolutely correct Arctic, brainfart on my side. Lower mm number - higher oil level - stiffer forks.

I see two mentions of the service manual spec @ 172mm.
That's what will go in the forks.

Thanks to all that replied.

I certainly don't want to add more confusion here, but the 07 service manual states 192mm (7.56 inches)... Ukbeg has an online version at http://www.ukbeg.com/pash/2007%20Uly%20Manual/sm02 a.pdf

If you go by 172mm, let me know how you think it handles?

The guy that did the forks measured the oil level with fork collapsed, and original spring installed.
60mm was recorded.
He set the oil level to the same spec 60mm with the progressive spring installed.

Without the spring installed the oil level was 172mm.

Just did this.....kinda. New seals and racing oil in 06 and 07 at same time. Did 06 first, memorized that 4.5" level and proceeded on to the 07. 07 started leaking within a week. Never riding but next day would have a spot on floor. Did the film trick once, then new seals again. Same deal. 3rd time with Honda seals. Had left 06 manual at home but have pristine 07 at the hangar. Holy cow...7.5"??? And here I had been thinking "don't know what the big deal is with 07 springs....rides like shit". What a maroon..And I think there is a mention of which end is down
