I swear I read a thread that had the fork oil level measurements for the various years. For the life of me, I can't find it now. Can anyone help me out? I need the 2008 measurement.

While I'm asking, did anyone else have problems getting the pre-load adjusters removed when disassembling a 2008 fork? I ended up pulling out the dampening rod.

I may be wrong but I thought is was done by the amount rather than the level. The LEVEL is the control of the air gap which is also part of the damping of the forks. Sort of like air suspension. If it was me I would put in the recommended amount (to the same level on each fork) of oil less about 10% to allow for what may still be in the forks and then add 5 ml per fork, with a syringe, after road testing to get it how you like it. This is because it is easier to add oil after than take it out and keep the levels equal.

This is measured on level, amounts is just a guidance to get you in the area. I thought I had this one for you, but looking closer to this post http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=142838&post=741654#POST741654 I see this is related to 06/07. But now I am all confused...

The "anonymous" post says 172mm on 2007, but my original 2007 manual says 192mm. For the record I followed the manual, and leveled at 192mm when I did my seals a couple of weeks back. Bike's riding fine, so I guess I'm good to go. (perhaps a 7/9 typo in the post?).

Looking through my 2008 manual it says:
XB12R - 107mm
XB12S/SS - 107mm
XB12SCG - 109mm
XB12STT - 118mm
XB12X - 114mm
XB12XT - 119mm

Thanks. You guys are lifesavers. I guess I need to buy the 2008 manual. I have a 2007 and I figured the differences wouldn't be that big of a deal. So far everything I have worked on has been different (stator, oxygen sensor,TPS, fork oil). The 2007 shows a lock ring for the preload adjuster. I don't see it on the 2008 and had to disconnect the dampening rod to remove the cap and the springs. It works, but it is probably not the easiest way.

I would have thought '07 and '08 would be the same.
the big change was in '07, when they moved to a progressive fork spring and revised the fork oil height.
I went off the info from "anonymous" post and have been happy on my '06 with '07 springs installed.
I like a bit firmer setup to control fork dive (which is why I replaced the springs in the first place), so the lower setting (172mm) makes sense for me anyway, as it will mean more oil/less air, and a firmer compression feel overall.
It's easy to change though, so start where you like and adjust it.
Remember that fork oil settings are taken from the top of the fork tube down to the oil height WITHOUT the fork springs installed though. Just measure to the centerline of the fork if they are inclined (installed on the bike still) and you should be good.
It's not super sensitive in my experience, so +/1 a few mm's is not going to be noticeable to most of us.

The forks on 08 is 47mm, vs. 43mm on 07, that is probably the reason for different levels. (Bigger dia = more air, need more oil to maintain the same damping characteristics/stiffness)

As said I went by the 192mm level in the 07 manual, and I wouldn't want it any stiffer : )

Anyone know the fork oil level for 1997 S3T with the WP fork?
Thanks!
