I have a clean well kept 06 Uly with plenty of extras. Listed it here, C/L and ADV for sale some time ago. Id like to generate some extra cash to take care of a few things, yet no sale still. Not ready to dive in just yet, but The though of parting it our crossed my mind. Crazy? could I get $3500 outta parting it out? I really thought $3500 for the bike was a steal with all the extras.

Ratman- it's hard to believe you can't get $3500 for a running 2006 Uly. Maybe the price is too low- so people think "there must be something wrong with it". You might do better to advertise it at $4000 or $4500 to at least get some lookers.

You can probably easily get more than $3500 for it parting it out, but it can be a PITA to do. Disassemble the bike (as far as you're willing to do), advertise the parts here or on ebay, negotiate the price of each part, figure out shipping, package and mail each part, update your ad, repeat. Some parts are obviously harder to ship than others. At a minimum, it's a lot of trips to the UPS store.

I'd just caution you to think about the effort involved before you part it out.

I bought a KLR-250 for a head I needed from it... I figured that instead of paying $400 for a head alone, a $650 parts bike would be much smarter. Take the head, sell the rest.

It's a colossal pain in the ass. I figure I spent 50+ hours breaking it down and posting auctions and running here and there to ship,

In the end I probably got that head "free", but it for sure wasn't worth it. And that was only a $650 investment.

Sell it whole.

parting out and selling is not a good idea i know by experience you end up selling some parts fast bet the rest can take months.

I agree with the above, parting out should only be a last resort. It is very time and labor intensive, and not everything will sell instantly. The payout will probably be around the same or maybe a little higher than selling the bike whole, but there isn't exactly a demand for Uly frames and suspensions from what I've seen over the years. Firebolt/Lightning/1125 parts seem to be easier to get rid of.

It would be a shame to part out a bike that actually is already roadworthy. A basket case is one thing but a bike that is already put together and runs is a crime.

I agree with Electraglider, no need to vivisect a running Ulysses.

What's the URL to your ad on ADV?
Does your post have pictures? Have you gave it a bump back to the top lately? Ads get buried pretty quickly in the Flea Market.

I think it is a marketing problem.

There are 5 ULYs on ebay at this moment that will sell for more than you are looking. Maybe list it on eBay and eat the fees?

Do all the normal things, take good pictures, spell check your ad and write good copy.

Everyone is spot on witht he comments - and left out one piece - a motorcycle taken apart consumes 70x more garage space than one assembled.

Shoot me a picture of it if you have a chance. I'm tied up with a big project right now but that sounds like a really good price....

That may be all it takes. Without pictures, people assume the worst.

I'm sure one of us would be glad to help with posting the pics; if you've got an ad here just post the photo URL's and we'll fix you up.

I don't think it's a lack of pictures, but this is why I would not piss on Keith Wandell if he was on fire.

I dunno, closing Buell might be reason it won't sell for $6k.

But a solid (though high milage) Uly with sidebags for $3500? Pffft. If that were local it would already be in my garage, and I don't have the space, money, or need for it.

I am currently parting out a 1999 klr650 because of a blown engine. And it's a PITA. Some parts go fast, others just sit there. You end up taking and emailing lots of pictures. I'd try hard to sell it whole.
