My 2009 Ulysses is shutting off for a split second. Kinda rough at a steady 3000 rpms. I can make it shutoff cruising at 3000 rpms. Sometimes during a hard acceleration between 4000 & 5000 rpms it will shut off for a split second, engine light comes on. No codes. Batt terminals are tight. BAS is good. Checked ECM connectors, ok. Where should I look next?

My 85K '06 has done that twice in two weeks recently, both in left turns one slow one fast. Almost dropped it in the slow turn, bigtime chassis upset in the fast turn. Momentary power loss, once recovered a quick glance to the panel just in time to see the CEL go out. I was thinking BAS too since they do wear out but mine's relatively new and recently recall-relocated. A head scratcher I hope doesn't end me up on my butt...

Relays.

With the bike idling, fiddle with them. I bet you repeat your symptoms.

My '08 did that a few times. It was an intermittent BAS failure. The BAS is rubber mounted but it was hitting a part of the metal mounting bracket which caused it to shut-off the engine, I'm guessing from vibration. Took the BAS apart, cleaned the internals, ground some more clearance on the mounting bracket and never had another problem.

Did the relays while running, same with BAS and ECM, dielectric grease on every terminal, still looking.

I can hold the throttle at 3000 rpms's in neutral and make it happen, sometimes.
It will shut off for a split second and keep runnning. the CEL comes on then goes off.

Sometimes while in 3rd gear @ 2800 to 3200 rpm's it will happen 2~3 times a mile. Other times I can go 10 miles and nothing happens.

I've never had to restart the bike. just stumbles for a second and I see the CEL.

How about jumper out the TPS? Unplug it and substitute a jumper wire between the terminals that plug onto it. That would be an easy check on that.

cam position sensor is another possible suspect, especially if your tach is going up (not down) when you feel it happen, and if you get backfires when it comes back.

I also had my kill switch wire shorting out in the wire bundle around the steering neck. That'll do it also.

Suspect cracked solder joints in the ECM until proven otherwise.

When making slow turns, <15mph, I always cover the clutch, just in case.

+1 Sounds very similar to my issue.

New ECM fixed mine

Yep, that's what kept me from falling over. My '06 has always had a random hiccup issue, though different from this latest thing.

My '06 had these symptoms for a year plus.
However, though no active codes, when i jumpered the pins I found an ECM Failure codes was stored in history.

Wife got me an EBR ECM last spring and no trouble since. Saving the stock ECM as a backup, since it still worked if you could live with the occasional stumble/light.

I had the same problem and traced it to a separated (but not visibly broken)wire in the bundle behind the headlight that runs back to the ECM. Bike acted like the kill switch was being cycled on and off.

Thats my next place to look if the ECM does not work. do you remember the color of the wire?

It was white with a dark stripe, possibly the kill switch wire. I had also tried a new ECM, battery and checked-cleaned-tightened grounds, etc. first. If turning the bars seems to have something to do with it, this may be it (wasn't in my case, heat caused it to happen). I still can't figure out how this wire, which was in the middle of the bundle, got pinched or stretched and the others didn't. This bunch of wires passes through a steel collar next to the left fork tube on its way back to the ECM and battery, and there may be abrasion going on there with handlebar movement, as I did see wear on the wire bundle wrapping. I wrapped the wire bundle in a thin sheet of PVC to protect it where it passes through the collar.

New ECM fixed it. I went on a 55 mile ride, didn't shut off once.

Bike ran cooler with the EBR Race ECM.
Real snappy. No fan at first stop. Its 85 today. Fan did run while riding, and when I pulled into my garage is was just running a mile down the road but when I shut the bike off, no fan.
Whats is the redline of the EBR ECM?

Pretty sure redline is the same. Be sure and relocate the ECM so you aren't chasing this issue again. Glad you got it sorted.

Don't think I need to relocate the ECM, my bike is a 2009 and there is a block above the one side of the ecm keeping the seat off of it. Unless there is some other mod I don't know about.

I do think the rev limiter is higher with the race ecm, I've never seen 7000 rpm's on my tach

I also have an 09 with the block. The seat still pushed on the rear connector and it did in the ECM. I weigh less than 135 lbs. I relocated the new ECM after seeing chafe marks on the rear connector after only a few hundred miles.

The block doesn't fix it. Search in the BB&D forum for "relocate ECM" and you'll find dozens of postings documenting the problem and alternatives for dealing with it.

The solder joints on my ECM also cracked causing the issue you described. The problem got progressively worse over several months until the bike was unridable.

Relocated my EBR ECM. I'd like to take apart my old ECM and see the broken solder joints.
