We have lived with the EBR ecm in the XT for a few weeks now, and overall could not be more pleased. Better mpgs, more powerband at speeds 70+.

I chimed in with this question on the "XT under the weather thread" but no response. Does any one have any thoughts on this?

"1) High idle on start. I can live with it, but if I don't feel I can take the extra time to let it taper down to a normal rpm before I start riding, does this affect performance in any way?"

All ears here. Thanks! B.

Fltwistygirl, I saw your question earlier but was really not sure how to respond to it. My 08XT with the EBR ECM does idle a little high at startup (which it is supposed to do) but I usually just let it idle fast while I am putting on my helmet and gloves. It still may be idling a little high but I just click it in gear and go. I still do not lug the engine or work it hard until it has run for a while.
I am not really sure about affecting performance though. Thanks.

I don't know how high your fast idle is, but I pretty much take off after firing up (giving about 30 seconds for the oil to flow if it hasn't been cranked recently). I have done this with every motorized vehicle I have ever owned save for a few cantankerous carbed ones that demanded a warmup.

My 2010 Uly does this even from a hot engine but its no problem. Hot or cold I just ride away. Start it from cold and then ride. See how it runs.

Thanks for the replies, all. I just want to understand what the ecm is telling the bike to do and why. Have not noticed a problem with performance when I jump on the bike almost immediately after starting other than it idles at a higher rpm than I am used to when I get to my first intersection. The idle seems much higher for longer than I recall with the stock ecm, and I'd like to know if it is necessary for me to swelter in our lovely Florida 90 degree heat for a couple minutes to wait for it to drop before I start riding to cool off. I gear up while still in the a/c, and it's only an issue when I'm leaving class during the heat of the day with nowhere to wait that is out of the direct sunlight. Come winter it will be a non issue. I do not have warm fuzzy feelings about leaving the bike unattended and running unsupervised even if it is within my eyeshot.

This is my first encounter with a race-anything on my bikes, and so far I like it, but am new to this world. I'm guessing the engine warm up programming of the ecm functions a bit like the (please don't flame me for this) auto enrichener on the blast?

If I remember correctly, my stock 08 XT ECM did not have the high idle feature. Are you saying yours did? I think mine would just start and settle right down to 1050 or so with the stock ECM.

"I just want to understand what the ecm is telling the bike to do and why." So would I and so would HD if they had the balls to admit it. But then again people want to pay into Facebook?

No. It definitely would settle right in with the stocker. It was that way until I started observing symptoms of ye old cracked ecm.

The higher cold idle is normal, it helps it warm up to operating temperature faster.

"The higher cold idle is normal, it helps it warm up to operating temperature faster."

Makes sense. Hate to make the comparison, but this one aspect reminds me of the Blast. I know the technology is prolly light years advanced w/EBR, but lower idle = ready to ride for both.

With the XT's stock ecm, after start up I would listen for the fan to come on to know it was warmed up enough to ride. It tended to not take long being a garage kept bike in FL.

In my turbocars, the high idle stage is called, I believe, "open loop" where the ECM only reads the temp sensor, and feeds a static line of code to the EFI system. Once the engine reaches the prescribed operating temperature, it goes into "closed loop" where it pays attention to the O2 sensor and other pieces of the puzzle, for "normal" operation.

Like Froggy said, the high idle is designed to reduce the time from coldstart to closed loop operation. Think of it as an EFI "choke" - you can ride, just take it easy. It'll sneeze at you if you push too hard too soon ; )

I installed mine and did a TPS reset with Ecmspy...must have corrupted the ecm. I see absolutely no benefits from the EBR ECM.

Hey Andre. You may want to drive around for a week or two. That's what it took for me to notice the subtle differences. I don't know if it was cause my bike was so well dialed in already, or if the new ECM was still learning.
My reasoning for buying the new ECM was for troubleshooting when the old one decides to crap out on me, and being previously owned, no idea if the connector issue was going to rear its ugly head. Someday I suspect EBR(or HD) won't be selling these anymore so I figured best get it now and have both under the seat just in case.

I installed mine and have been riding around for a while now. Not to jinx myself, but it seems to have cured my electrical issue. So I am very happy to have the bike running.

+ and -

+ Improved Throttle Response throughout range
+ Much smooter idle
+ Rolls on more cleanly from lower rpms
+ Runs cooler

- Mild surging between 2500 - 3000

None of the above effects are profound, but they are definitely noticeable and lend to make riding the bike more pleasant, especially the throttle response. The engine just feels more sorted and usable. The surging isn't an issue since I don't ride in that range, and the effect really is very minor. I only noticed it because I was appreciating how much smoother the bike was accelerating from lower rpms. For all I know, it may improve as I put more miles on the bike.

I wish I could have included Froggy-like gas mileage as Fltwistygirl reported in the "Plus" column, but I burned through my first tank of fuel in normal fashion. It wasn't a goal, and I wasn't expecting leaner consumption, but it would have been great.

There is no increase in power or torque, which I wasn't expecting either since I have a stock setup. My only goal was to get the bike running again. Everything else is just gravy.

What idle are you all using? I was at 950. EBR told me 1150 to 1200 idle. I think that's too high. I always thought 1050 was the factory setting originally.

I purchased my Uly with the EBR ecm already installed along with a special ops exhaust. I've never ridden it with the stock parts (which I also have). I did buy the bike in PA and rode it home to NL Canada, I did ask the seller to tone the noise down when he told me the special ops had adjustable baffles. He was running it a little (or a lot) louder. He said the bike lost a lot when he quietened it up (I didn't want to get busted for excessive noise riding home)

I am finding occasionally the bike runs a bit rich when cruising at low speeds, it with run rough and sometimes backfire when I stop. I am assuming the EBR ecm being "for racing only" wants to be pushed.

Any suggestions? Thought about opening the pipe up a little, maybe reverting to the stock emc

Sell the Special Ops and go with a Drummer I had the same issue when I had a Special Ops. No offense to Odie, but It was a little loud and tinny to me. The Drummer has a lower tone and can be baffled. Long trips with either is kind of annoying though. Stock is much better for trips...IMO.

I installed my EBR ecm on my stock piped 2008 XB12XT today.
Instruction sheet said turn key on, open throttle to wot, release to snap shut, do it three times. Then start and idle it 10 minutes.
Did that, then went for a ride.
Much smoother roll on acceleration from below 3k rpm. Idles better. When you start it the rpm stays up for a few seconds then back down to idle.
Overall, first impression is the bike feels much more refined. Much easier taking off from a stop making a hard left/right.
Kept the stock one as a spare.
I am happy.

Next step is sorting the brakes. I have the Lyndall pads in there from PO with a stock replacement disc; I have to say the front brake sucks. Unless my memory is bad, my 01 m2l stopped better. My 1125CR stopped better. Talking with EBR about my options this week, maybe Al too.
