Is it possible to do this on the XBs?
My Useless just took it's usual 5,000 mile vacation from active duty - the check engine light came on but it doesn't run especially weird.
The fan does not come on when the bike is shut off so I'm guessing it's the ETS in the rear head.
I'd rather not wait 10 days for the local dealership to schedule this 5 minute job into their busy schedule.

Thank you!
I'd also like to say thanks to the people who make this site possible and thanks to Al for catering to us die hards.

It worked like a charm.
Blown fuse for the fan, checked all of the wiring, replaced the fuse and I'm back in business.
After 10 days on the X1W the Useless feels like a very tall, two wheeled couch!
55,245 miles and counting, I'll make 100,000 yet.

Hey that looks like a handy gizzmo to have to hand and cheap enough. But here is a thought? Why the Hell was this sort of thing not been built into the bike in the first place. I know they are on other modern bikes. I think if they had it would have saved some of use a lot of time and effort in the past.

A fuse can become weak over time but I would check your fan bearings just to be safe.

Nice gizmo. The cheapest and simplest method is to bridge current across the prongs in the diagnostic port with a screwdriver (or any other conducting material).

I guess you can but I was thinking more along the lines of a button on the dash.

Which prongs are bridged to cause codes to blink?

From the electrical diagnostic manual: "See Figure 2-7. Install diagnostic test wire across terminal "1" and terminal "2" on the data link connector [91A]."
Test wire just connects the two prongs (terminals), but a screwdriver works fine also, as long as you don't need to move around too much.

They now make nifty fuses with LED's in them that light up when the fuse opens. I put them in everything. SmartFuse I think they're called. Hard to miss that code.

It's supposed to flash something like 6 times rapidly to let you know that it's working. Slower flashes after that are your codes. Slightly longer pauses separate the digits. All codes are two digits, there are no zeros, and they repeat. If all you get are three flashes then that would be 33. Try it again and pay attention to how long the pauses are because you could also be reading an 11, if you get what I mean.
