I've always used Formula+ but the ex-dealer no longer carries it so what other oil are you using and if you find them any better? | ||

I use Amsoil 20W50 motorcycle oil. Tranny shifted better after replacing the first time going from the stock oil. Good stuff. Be prepared for a lot of opinions as oil questions ALWAYS result in a lot of discussion. (Message edited by svh on August 02, 2011) | ||

I was recommended by a few people to use Mobil 1 20w50 V Twin. It is a good quality synthetic that can be found at most local auto parts stores. I've found 3 different places within 5 miles of me that stock it. I've only done 1 change since buying my bike, but I've been happy with it so far. | ||

I am not happy with Royal Purple 20/50 Syn. I will go back to AMSOIL. I was very happy with it. The bike ran cooler and shifted smoother. Another HUGE PLUS is AMSOIL sponsors my favorite Superbike team!!!  (Message edited by union_man on August 02, 2011) | ||

I went from SportTrans to Form+ to Mobil 1 20/50. I figure if Harley is putting Chevron's synthetic everywhere that doing the same with Mobil should be okay. Don't use Mobil 80/90W gear lube, btw. The additives will attack your stator. | ||

I've tried Amsoil 20/50 and Mobil 1 20/50 in my tranny and both made it slip when really hot. Been using Formula+ ever since with no issues. Love the Amsoil in the motor though. Runs great. | ||

If you want to use a Mobil-1 product, note that they specifically recommend Mobil-1 10W-40 motorcycle oil for Buell transmissions. I'm currently running Amsoil 20W-50 in my "new" 2009 primary. It doesn't shift nearly as easily as my old 2007 transmission did. Since I have no idea how this tranny was broken in, it may be that it's just not broken in. If it doesn't get noticeably better by the next oil change, I may go to Formula+ which I was very pleased with in my original transmission. (Message edited by Hughlysses on August 04, 2011) | ||

Hughlysses, could you tell us who recommends Mobil-1 10W-40 and why? In my area the Mobil-1 10W-50 is much easier to find. Is there an issue using the 10W-50? I e-mailed Mobil a couple of years ago and asked, and they specifically recommended the Mobil-1 Racing 4T 10W-40 motorcycle oil for Buell primaries/transmissions. Another Badwebber got the same answer. I don't think there's ever been any issue with using the 15W-50 auto oil or 20W-50 V-twin motorcycle oil in the primaries, but that's just not what Mobil themselves recommend. | ||

I swapped not after Amsoil came on board but after I read some of the research material. I doubt there are any "bad" oils. Amsoil, when you do some research, is impressive.. | ||

I have tried a number of oils for the transmission. I used Mobil 1 and Amsoil 20W50 motor oils. The shifting was OK. I ran Redline Light weight Shockproof . The best shifting but the clutch became grabby. I am currently using Redline 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil. I know it is GL-5, but this is recommended by Redline since they use no additives that attack red metals. The Redline tech said they prefer to use this gear lube since it is designed for clutched rear ends and has very hi shear resistance. The gear lubes are also designed to allow particles and contaminates to drop out of suspension whereas motor oils are designed to suspend. The shifting is not quite as good as the shockproof but much better than the synthetic motor oils that I tried. | ||

I am not happy with Royal Purple 20/50 Syn. Really? I'm using it and happier than can be with it. Don't notice any shifting issues or heat issues (outside the normal can't turn the heated seat off even in 100+ degree heat). Wayne | ||

I'm currently running Formula+ in the tranny of all my bikes. Tried RP 20/50 once, and hated it. As many positive testimonials as I've heard though, I'm tempted to give Amsoil a shot. I already use it in the engine. | ||

The gear oil is the same viscosity as 20-50W oil (or very close), so it should work. I use it in my final drive of my BMW, but I've stuck with 20-50W oil for the primary on my Uly. Anybody else here using gear oil? Wayne | ||

Red Line Primary Chaincase lube in the 09 Uly. Shifts nice, I can get neutral from 1st or 2nd when stopped. I put RL 10W-40 in the motor at 20k because I was riding in 20-30 degree (F) weather. At 24k now and it's hot but the Uly seems to like the lighter oil. Top-end is very quiet. My personal feeling is "motor oil" is not thick enough or (more importantly) sticky enough for a transmission. Zack | ||

Well I'll add my experiences as a data point. Been using SuperTech 20W50 in both the primary/transmission and motor since around 25k miles. Change the engine oil every 5k and Primary every 10K miles. Works great. Transmission shifts just as smooth (or not) as when I was used Formula+. No doubt that other oils have better specs, but I'm right at 100K miles without any engine or transmission failures, so I will assume the the ST works just fine and is inexpensive to boot. YMMV | ||
