Thanks all.
I called another sponsor, StoneMtn, and they were the first of 3 parts guys to pick up the phone, instead of putting me on indefinite hold.
The guy was very helpful, but almost too much! They didn't have one on hand (I really did not expect anyone would anyway), but he found that Tilley's in NC had a kit in stock. He was actually encouraging me to get it from a (slightly more) "local" dealer that had one in stock.
Imagine...
Anyway, I called Tilley's and it is on it's way to me tomorrow.
In the end, it's all good!

Arcticktm, If you go to Chicago Harley's website you can order from there if you know the part numbers. Go to the right side of the screen at the top and put in a part number. I just noticed they don't have a Buell sign on that page but do mention them on others. The do have good prices. [redacted]

Please don't advertise or promote non-sponsors.

Blake, if I do something wrong please PM me. I don't appreciate being scolded in front of everybody. I wouldn't put up with that with my boss either. I've only tried to help other members here, I don't deserve a puplic ass chewing.

Hi Froggy,

I found that to be true on the BMW side of their business but not on the Harley side. YMMV

Have any 2006 Uly owners installed the kit and did it make any difference in the fan running while riding?

I rode about 300 miles on Sunday and the fan did not come at all until I turned the bike off. My guess is that the fan usage has decreased by about 90%. Before the bike would get up to temp and the fan would come on and stay on until I let the bike cool off. The fan also does not run nearly as long in the high speed mode and shuts off completely in about half the time. All in all I am very impressed with this mod.

When I stop the bike the frame is about equal in temp on both sides. Wheich is a big change. Seems to be a lot cooler in general.

I have an '06. If you read back in the thread, I have a few posts about it...but yes. It made a huge difference. Except for one day, poking along fully loaded (3 full bags, 2 up) in traffic in 100+ weather, it hasn't come on once while riding, only for about a minute after key-off.

After sitting ons the sidelines for a few weeks, I just ordered mine this morning. No idea of when I'll get it at this point but I'm looking forward to it for my 06. I think I will go with the RSS and the wait on the fan shroud.

Here's a fairly large ( 12" by 17") $10.39 silicone mat that would probably work nicely to insulate the heat emanating from that new comfort shroud. From Target and good up to 500 degrees.

http://www.target.com/Wilton-Mat-Silicone-Ultra-Ba ke/dp/B001DITKCW/sr=1-1/qid=1251467460/ref=sr_1_1/ 190-8165384-6699567?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index &frombrowse=0&rh=k:silicone_mat&page=1

Here's another one for $9.99
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/190-8165384-6 699567?asin=B0002MH2G6&AFID=Nextag_df&LNM=|B0002MH2G6&CPNG=kitchen&ref=tgt_adv_XSN10001

Or you can get it here in bulk:

Electroglider,

The silicone rubber I used was sponge, not solid. The insulating properties of the solid my not be as good as sponge. Additionally, the sponge will conform to irregular shapes encountered on the shroud and other items.

I am not saying the solid will not work, just that the sponge worked very well.

So the question you gotta ask yourself is,

'Do you think you're sponge worthy?'

I wonder whether the solid sheet can be cut and formed into a fan duct itself?

I just thought you all might want to see a picture of the finished cowl in place. I also put foil heat tape on the openings over the rear head. This easy little mod has made a tremendous improvement to the leg heat problem.

I installed mine in two painful phases. First was the RSS install. I had an alignment issue and managed to snap the rear tab off. After glue and paint, it is installed and works well. Fan only came on after 20 miles of running at 80. Co-worker followed me in to the parking lot on his stock Uly and my fan only ran half as long as his on shut-down.

Phase 2 was the cowl. I have bags so it was going to be kindava pain. It was hotter than the surface of the sun so I thought I would try to install it without removing the seat pan. I was able to remove the battery, ECM, fuse box, and battery pan. After removing the preload knob and helmet lock I was able to lift the front of the pan enough to contort the cowl into place. I did need an additional hand to hold the shock res while I manipulated it into place. I'm sure if it was colder I would not have had the flexibility to bend it without breaking it.

Off to test it now in 95 degree temps.

This "Comfort Kit" works great the temperature here in North East Nebraska has not been over 75 degrees since I installed the kit. Even my neighbors have thanked me for improving the weather with this installation.

New to the Board and Buell. I have a 2006 XB12X, have had it about 4 months. I have notice the heat on the right leg, and would like to order and install the comfort kit.
The question I have, I have the Micron exhaust and headers. Does anyone if the kit will work with these heads?? I am right to understand the re-flash will not apply since I have an 06 model. Thanks in advance for the help, this forum is a great resource. }

Fubar,
I don't believe you can compare one fan time run against another ULY simply because no two engine temp sensors are probably calibrated exactly the same, different oil types, oil volume, one fan might be running faster rpm than then other, etc.

I,m going to install mine over the winter,39 degrees this morning so the warm seat felt good.
We'll have warm days here still but no hurry for me.

Tosa-I'll bet the kit will work with those headers and no the reflash is not for 06 and 07 from what I've read here.

I just had my dealer install the kit on Friday. Buell said it should take 2.1 hours to install and that is what they charged me!

I was actually very happy to hear that as it took them the better part of the day to install it on my XT. It was their first kit and I was willing to let them use mine for the first install if they only charged me the 2 hours.

I tell you what though, my 240 miles home was much different than the ride there. The heat difference is huge!! Fan operation is much less as well. Now I can only hope that the flash may have helped my mileage, but that may be asking too much!

Oh, by the way, the RSS does smell a bit of Velveeta, sort of cheesy, but not real cheese.

It's not as nice looking, but that's only when you compare it to the LSS though. It looks fine and does the job very well. I'm glad that Buell brought these kits out at a reasonable price. It really makes you think that they put it out there for us as a service for the multiple burns and blisters on the right thigh!!

Got my kit on Thurs and installed it Fri night/Sat AM on my '06 Uly (stock with '07 airbox). I left my Odie blanket on top of the new shroud, to help with the rear cylinder head/frame gap.
My fan does take longer to come on now, but it still will come on in most driving conditions (temp was about 80F and kind of humid).
Biggest news to me is that when the fan does come on, it is MUCH quieter, with the new shroud making a helluva muffler.
I did not know the fan was on until I slowed down, as the airbox and wind noise was louder than the fan (FINALLY!).

This makes it possible to have a (nearly) normal conversation after shutting the bike down.

I have the sidebags, so the install was complicated by all the crud being tough to get back in place. Go ahead and just unbolt the crossover brace and get it over with. I was not willing to try and sneak the new shroud in place without removing the seat pan, since the plastic seemed a bit brittle.

I had to trim the shroud and slightly "straighten" the path of the fuel line coming out of the fuel pump, to make sure the edge of the shroud would never touch the unprotected fuel line.

I would have liked a more positive (bolt/screw/etc) attachment for the shroud, but overall the kit went in OK, just a lot of under seat junk to move.

I am very glad I did it already.

I don't understand why Blake "scolded" Tootal for directing me to Chicago???
They still show as a sponsor under the parts board section, so what gives?
I didn't go with them anyway, but why give someone grief for trying to help another Badwebber? Defeats the whole point of the board, since most of us use this board because our dealer network overall is weak (and that is being nice).

Does this stop the pinging?

After nearly 4 years of Uly ownership I am tired of the pinging.

Love pretty everything else about the bike.

Hi Sean,

Yep - been a long time. Still riding a bunch though. This year did 1000+ miles on the CAMS trip to Yosemite, 500+ miles each on our "Parkfield 500" ride and our "Ponderosa 500" ride. The last 2 were day rides and both included some dirt roads just for grins.

Also have been riding my CRF250X a bunch this summer. Started out dirt riding near Willow Springs in April, then Charlie's Place, back near Willow in June, then Kennedy Meadows in the high Sierras about 40 miles North of Kernville then Sunday at Ballinger.

Still learning how to ride!

Jim_sb, do you run premium gas in your Uly?

My 2006 Uly also pings when I burn regular gas in it but not when I run a 91 octane or higher gas.

RE: the Uly comfort kit

my 2006 came with a partial comfort kit installed, it blows some hot air on my right leg when I ride. Now if I could only get it to do likewise on my left leg! It sure would have been nice to have when I was coming home last night when it was 51 degrees out!
