here's a tacky alternative to super-glue on the forward ECM nut....duct tape...a little tension once threads engage and that's about it.

Good info . . . the screw will come out tonight, the threads will get chased and I'l go with a touch of Kopper-Kote.

Never thought about the Loc-Tite being an insulator.

Thanks Guys

Court- there have been several threads here about cleaning up various ground connections and using star lockwashers to improve the current path. IIRC, there's a factory bulletin on the subject. While the tail is disassembled for the kit installation is a perfect time to do it.

Those of you from Texas, Florida, and other corners of Hell..... has the kit eliminated the boiling of fuel in the frame?

If so there could be another XB12X in my future. I enjoyed my '06 Uly but could no longer tolerated the red and tender right thigh it left me with. It's been long gone.... and much missed.

Riding the Uly to work today - even though I'd rather be on the S1W - to test out the comfort kit in the forecast'ed 100+ temps here in the DC burbs. We'll see...

Quoting myself

Riding home from work today proved the effectiveness of the RSS and header shield to me. I haven't even done the fan shroud yet (I do have the 2 pc. "Maximum" Odie's blanket), or the reflash, but the right side was DEFINITELY cooler than usual.
Only 1/2 hour ride in 90+ degrees, but I'd say the left side was warmer than the right !

Do it !

I've never ever noticed even a hint of "boiling fuel". But I've not been bothered by any type of heat issues with my '09 Uly. I'm getting near 4K miles since purchasing the bike new in January.

I don't ride in stop and go traffic, worst case is a half dozen red lights if I ride through town on the way home.

With the comfort kit installed and riding my usual route to work on this Hottest day of the year, I reached the area where my fan kicks on like clockwork. Silence -- Yeah!!!

At the lot and key off, the newly replaced fan kicked on as expected. Fan sound is much better.

I am grinning and much more happy with the Uly experience. The fan and fan sound has been a burr under my saddle for several years and it now seems much better.

My ride home is far warmer and I would expect on a day like today I would get some fan activity about mid route. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

All this without the reflash.

So...is there any reason you cannot just go and get the reflash only?? I already have Odie's heat blanket, so the heat under my butt is tolerable. If I can find a local dealer to give me the reflash for free, I might try that first before I spend any coin.

Well we had one of the hottest weekends of year here in St Louis and I picked my bike with the kit and the flash done Friday night. Several of the guys at Gateway took my bike out to see the difference and the agreement is that this was a huge improvement. I rode my bike all weekend and first half of the weekend without my cases and second half with cases just to see if there was a difference. The bike is warm but not hot and I didn't notice a specific hot spot like I did before. I wore a variety of gear from my Timax pants to just jeans and was just fine! The fan kicked on for a bit when I was in stop and go traffic but nothing major. 2 thumbs up from me on the improvements

If it can control the pinging, then I'd like to give it a shot.

When I'm beating on my Uly, riding it hard, it likes to develop a little ping under heavy throttle application.

I've been trying to keep up with this thread, but it gets a lot of posts and I think I've missed some info along the way...

Does anyone know for certain if the '06-'07 bikes get an ECM flash for the comfort kit or is it just the '08+? If so, has anybody done it yet?

+1 ...but, as mentioned, perhaps the download may lock out ECMspy, etc.

OK. '06 Uly, race ECM, drummer, open airbox. Just installed the comfort kit (RSS, header shield, underseat duct). NO download, I don't think it'll work with the race ECM anyway.

Our weather today: 98 actual; 104 heat index. Humid as all get-out. Slabbed it in to work, my usual ...um...extralegal speeds. Fan did NOT come on at all until I turned off the key, then it cycled on high for about 10 seconds, low for another 15 or so, then off. It was "only" about 85 and humid at that point.

Riding home, I took the "traffic" route on purpose, I wanted stop and go. Still no fan while riding. Awesome. Stopped at the store to get dinner, so the bike heatsoaked a bit while I was in there (3 mins). When I shut it off, fan kicked on for about a minute. I hang my helmet on the right side passenger peg - it was a TORRENT of wind coming out onto the hugger. I was amazed.

Got out, fired the bike back up, right leg was back to the "same old" warm for about half a mile. Once up to speed...it cooled right off. Right and left sides feel like the same temp now when moving.

Overall.....

Followup on the C-kit I just installed Sunday with no reflash.

Rode home in the high 80s to low 90s today and no fan while riding. Fan ran at key off only.

I have not had the reflash but I was thinking that if it was adding a little smarts then the fan could run on low when over some medium speed and at some medium temperature and the fan noise would be negligible while the help of the fan turning would keep things even cooler overall.

Today, with no fan while riding and in this heat the frame was very warm when I pulled into the garage. A little low speed fan action at speed would have to help the air flow vs a stopped fan semi-occluding the air flow.

I will be interested in how the reflash changes the fan operation. If it is as effective as the kit alone then it could be very interesting.

Does anyone know if the "comfort kit" reflash (programming) is model specific?

If BMC watches this site then how hard could it be to make their BMC website more clear on exactly what reflash works with each year bike and what the reflash does period. I'd be reluctant to reflash my ecm when I'm not clear what it does or what the advantage is. Come on BMC, your faithful riders are asking questions you could answer but aren't.

I don't think BMC watches, just certain employees. It would be nice to know if the ECM update applies to all years.

There's an interesting related thread in the XB forum. An 08 XB12R rider took his bike in for some routine work and noticed that the fan works completely differently since he got it back. An Anony confirmed that he got the new fan control logic.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/486790.html?1250020124

Based on this, the new fan control scheme is at least as big of an improvement as the Rider Comfort Kit. Now, if we can just find out if it applies to all Ulys...

My wife was talking to Tish Buell and she said that Erik knows this site well ; )

I'd say they get about 80% plus of there product feedback from here!

I made some calls today to two dealers in NE pa. about the comfort kit. Going price is 119.00. The dealer I purchased the 08 Uly from still does not have any information on the upgrade. He did check to see how much would it be to have the reflash done.
I can get the kit, 119.00, download program 150.00 and 30.00 more to install was what they quoted me. I wish I had a good Buell dealer!
I guess the flash is out, I will ride till I find the next buyer.

Tim out.

Most of the Buell flash updates are no-charge items (unlike a lot of the HD maps which do cost), so it's not likely that they should be charging you for the firmware itself.

Can anyone confirm if the comfort kit flash download is no charge or included with the cost of the kit?

2 weeks ago I ordered the comfort kit and while at the dealer I had ECM update # M31US25Z completed. On the ride home I noticed the fan did not run at all. It only run after I stopped the bike as normal. It may be me, but I also feel the bike runs better than before the update. I installed the RSS and there is a noticeable difference in right side heat. I live in Florida and rode 300 miles last Saturday as a shakedown ride for my upcoming vacation run out west. Temp was 95 at noon when I returned home and the fan never came on until I turned off the ignition. I don't know the number of the "comfort" update to ECM but the dealer told me theM31US25Z is the latest version as of 1 August. My bike is a 2009 XB12X.

The reflash is for 2008 and 2009 bikes. 2010 bikes come with the strategies already in place. It does not work with 2007 or earlier bikes or the race ecms. It is not model specific.
