Hi everybody, finally I am jumping into this place..an amazing place it is.
Short history, a couple months ago, bought brandnew 08 Uly..two weeks ago, got rid of longtime mount, 97 RoadKing,had it three years. Ride about twenty five thousand k's per year on average, not much to some, but our riding season is only six months long.
I love the Uly, specially after so much time on a sofa with wheels it is so awesome to ride a "real" machine, ok, kidding. But you all get it.
One crappy thing, no dealer within two hours of here. Huge new Harley dealer, no Buells, they refuse, not sure how that happens. Bought bike three hours away.
Got shop manual. But.....
Ok, now my problem. Yesterday the check engine light went on, and would not go off..in the middle of a long wonderous perfect ride. Everything was going fine, so just kept going. Rode all day, no problems, light still on. See advice here about checking codes, but not sure where to do that, and nothing in the service manual, but to tell me to get to Electrical manual..what the F...
So, can you'all help..I see here that Froggy knows almost everything, what he does not, there are several that pull up the slack..I am stoked to be part of the Buell revolution we will take over the world..

The service manual on my '06 uly tells you how to troubleshoot codes in the field without a scanner thingy. I imagine the 08 is no different. Find the diagnostic connector, should be on the shifter side of the bike somewhere, and you ned a small wire exposed on both ends to jump two of the pins, and then depending on the sequence of flashes you can then translate the number in the service manual. Sorry I can't give the exact steps, but I hope this helps.

$10 says its your exhaust actuator, it seems like there was a bad batch of them on the 08's.

About the Harley dealer, part of the dealer contract states they cannot work on Buell motorcycles. There is a couple long threads on the subject if you want me to scrounge them up for you.

Does your horn or rear break light work? If not, probably have a blown fuse #4 (10 amp). Fuse #4 is protects the exhaust actuator, rear brake lamp and horn. Mine blows every 5 to 10 thousand miles just for the hell of it. I put in a new one and I'm good to go. Dealer never could find a problem and don't care any more.

10 bucks aye Froggy..huummmm, well with what I have seen of your history here not sure the odds are with me on this..would that be canadian or us dollars..ha...Thanks for the quick response. I will however try one thing, it is morning here and have not headed out into the day yet, so will unhook the battery cable for a bit, and see what if it goes off..the bike is running fantastic, but have the start of a eight hour ride tomorrow, will stop in at the one shop that is two hours away,see if they will give me a quick reading. Will see if I can locate this connector your all talking of as well..where in the service manual would I find the info, what heading do I look under..

Ok, new thing...just turned the key on, in the inside quiet of my garage, once the fuel pump does its cycle, the engine light goes out, but a few seconds later it comes back on, and there is a ticking sound coming from inside the airbox on the top of the bike..took the cover off, and the small box on the top, where the cable is, there is a ticking sound coming from that small black box..whaz'that mean..

That's the exhaust actuator. Ticking...it may be physically bound up somehow when it's trying to move the plate and the ticking you hear is the gear skipping teeth.

Palladin....most dealers will replace it under warranty if you fuss enough. It's more of a nuisance than anything.

Hey guys, thanks..managed to get it booked in for tomorrow morning, the shop is two hours away, but luckily it is on my way..I am leaving for a job about nine hours away, just have to leave earlier than I planned is all..and yeah Froggy, the service guy said the same thing...I will however await the real verdict before I send you the tenner..

I think any dealer should be happy to do a warranty repair like an exhaust servo. I don't think it will be an issue at all. Seems like many have taken them off with aftermarket exhaust. I see a lot of them on ebay going for 24 bucks.
