Took delivery of the XT this afternoon. Rode home (mostly freeway) in temps in the low 70's. I never heard the fan come on while riding and when I got to the house (about 25 miles) and shut off the engine, the fan came on as expected - but it only stayed on the "high" speed for a split second then went to the lower speed - and ran for almost 10 minutes. Hmmm....

A little while later, I went back out for another quick ride. Again, the ambient temps were very comfortable so I wasn't too surprised not to hear the fan. However, I was surprised when about 7 miles into the ride the check engine light came on. I immediately took it to the house, shut it down and the fan came on once again - at the lower speed and for about 10 minutes.

So my question... Would I be ok to ride the her back the 20 miles to the dealer or should I have the dealer come pick her up so that I'm not further damaging anything?

Up until the light came on, I was totally enjoying the new bike experience. After 3 months of waiting for the XT, I'm a little disheartened that I'm going to have to have it serviced and there's not even 50 miles on it yet.

I would call the dealer and ask them to send a trailer to come pick the bike up. If they refuse, which I doubt they will, any damage in the trip back will be their responsibility.

Maybe it is something simple and minor. Take a deep breath and call the dealer.

Kudos to my dealer (so far)... They called me first thing this morning and came and picked it up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's just a very simple error code that was thrown up and I'll be riding again tonight.

But, I still can't help that disappointing feeling when watching my new bike - with only 40 miles on it, being carried away.

Towjam- your description of fan operation doesn't sound abnormal, especially for a brand-new bike. Check engine light can be caused by extremely minor issues; glad to hear your dealer jumped on it. I expect you'll be riding this weekend.

Failed oxygen sensor. Simple enough. However, they have to order it so it'll be Tuesday/Wednesday at the earliest before I have it back.

Not a happy camper here.

Damn, it's brand new. Tell them to take one off another bike. That's ridiculous.

Lol I would go there and when they aren’t looking pull the sensor off a floor bike, sneak into the service area, put it on the bench and then loudly say "Hey look! This sensor is good! Put it on my bike and get me out of here : )"

I think if I were to walk into the dealer right now, I would have more eyes and cameras on me than a card counter in Vegas. I have made them aware of my "concerns" - although to their credit, both the Buell tech and my salesperson have called me several times today to update me. They also offered to bring the XT back to the house so that I could have it over the weekend while waiting for the sensor - then they'd pick it up again when the sensor arrived, do the swap and deliver the bike back. I told 'em just to keep it until it was fixed. All in all, I can't complain about their service or responsiveness.

On the other hand, I'm about to go totally postal on Sears. I've been trying to schedule a repair for a kitchen appliance and have gotten the run around for two days. Customer service is at an all time low.

In the past 4 days, American canceled my roundtrip flight to Colorado, my high-tech oven went tits up (no TV dinners for me now) and my 40-mile-old XT is throwing an error code. Oh yeah, I found out this afternoon that our roof appears to have sustained damage in Wednesday night's storm.

I just need a hug.

I hear ya towjam that is disappointing. IMO Buell still has a little way to go to reach Japanese reliability.

My clutch wire form broke at 500 miles and my ck engine light came on at around 1500 miles. That turned out to be a prob with the wiring harness.

I love my Buell though and I think you will be happy with yours too. There is nothing like a Buell :o)

Towjam - your fan experience is just like the experience I've had with the '08s. Unless they're being run H-A-R-D and shut right off, the fan only runs for a sec on hi, then throttles down. And I never heard it come on while riding, unlike my '06.

I *will* find a way to put the larger oil cooler on an '06....

Thanks for the encouraging words. The XT is my 4th Buell so I have no doubt I'll be happy with it. My disappointment/frustration is because of the 20+ new bikes I've purchased, this is the first one that has needed immediate servicing - and it's the most anticipated bike I've purchased. (I put my deposit down the Monday following the dealer show announcement.)

Ok. I promise. I'm done whining (for) now.

If yesterday's rides are any indication, the cooling system has been significantly upgraded with the '08s. That exact same route, in those same temps, would have the fan running constantly on my '04 and '07 Firebolts and Lightning Long. However, unlike the '08, I don't recall the older models' fans running for so long after shutdown. I only hope the '08 has a low-battery "awareness" feature that will shut the fan off quicker in the event the battery voltage falls too low.

One thing I had forgotten about until last night, was the heat on my right leg. Granted, I was wearing jeans - not leathers but for commuting to/from work, this may be an issue as my employer has yet to implement a "Racing Leathers Friday" policy.

It's got bags, pack 'work clothes' in one of them and change when you get there!

Seriously? I feel your pain. The upside is that it's something probably simple and if you're motivated, you can diag it yourself before you call the dealer. Check out this thread: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/353009.html?1208386586

On a side note, I got my XT back from the dealer today. They did the O2 replacement and knock on wood, I've not gotten the CEL again - at least in the 25 miles I rode since getting it back.

Yeah, I was gonna make a crack that your issue is blue bike related, but now my red is showing the light at 220 miles. Karma is a bitch.
